We read a lot of reviews whenever we chose any hotel/place to go because for me and my husband, every single minute of a vacation counts. We did read a lot of reviews about Ramgarh Lodge too before reaching there. But there were many surprises that waited for us there and which none in the reviews that we came across had spoken about!!
Plethora of birds. No one told us (not even the property managers!) that we would be having breakfast with pied wagtails, roufus-treepies, forked tails, green beaeaters, sweet loving parrots, mad common babblers and a group of wild pigeons. You might get visited by a few squirrels too as you stretch yourself in the sprawling lawns while a few babblers might end up knocking at your window as you are about to doze off to a small afternoon nap! Please note that you need lesser number of people around to be able to watch those birds flutter around you and soon start treating you as one of them.
The serenity. It is unbeatable. You can hear the sound of your fingers touching the nape of your neck as you gather your hair. You can hear the sound of the pen that you use to note down a certain thought as loud as that of a wheel scratching the rails when brakes are applied to an already-slowing-down train. If you focus too hard, you might even end up even hearing your own heart beat with bare ears!! IT IS THAT QUIET.
The privacy. Respecting your privacy is number one rule for everyone who works there at the property. Be it the man deputed to look after the ducks or the shy village garden ladies whose heads stay usually buried in their work. The first morning when we were sitting outside below the central tree (which is also used as a bar in the nights), we were served tea almost an hour after we had requested for it. And later we realized that the staff knew better than us about not disturbing our private tryst with nature and with each other.
The timelessness. When you see old-dead animals that must have passed away some 200 years ago, you cannot help but scrutinize their body parts more carefully as most of it have been safely preserved through a work done very well by the taxidermists. There are paintings belonging to 1883 and beyond depicting scenes from the yesteryears horse hunts. There is carrom board, there is chessboard and there are books. Everything to make you feel timeless and ageless.
Indresh. This boy was one of the best feature of the hotel. He understood us particularly our dietary habits or potential preferences better than us. He knew when he could ask us to go for laal maas despite knowing fully well that we wished to try the fish or when he could request us not to order any dessert or to order it later for our stomachs might get too full to finish it. His intuitions were very strong about our yet-unknown-to-us desire for tea. He was extremely respectful and open hearted. Soft spoken. And lively. He made our stay much more special than it every could have been.
People, this is a place sufficient in itself. And if you ever plan to stay there. Just stay there and enjoy the beauty of it. Don't waste time in exploring places around. Nothing is more beautiful and worth your time than the Lodge itself. We both loved it. Shall...

Read moreIt was an interesting experience to be a guest of this heritage property built by Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob in 1920. Preferred by Maharani Gayatri Devi and her husband, Maharaja Man Singh II, this property has many hunting trophies shot by the Maharaja. Getting to this property one has to drive through a very narrow road built atop the old dam. There was only incline throughout the property and getting around and accessing the toilets would be very difficult for persons of reduced mobility. The front office Manager, Abhipray looked after us very well and enquired about us often though as is the case with properties frequented by more foreigners than Indians, the kitchen staff are spoilt rotten. Even though we took the meal package and were entitled to eat according to a time suitable to us, the kitchen staff always tried to serve our food as quickly as possible and before the appointed time so that they could run away home. At night they served us almost cold chicken cutlets. I even found a shard of broken grass while walking barefoot in the grass surrounding the outside bar area. The area surrounding the hotel is pristine and beautiful but infested with monkeys and an empty building on top of the dam has been converted into a Hanuman temple leading to regular feedings by locals of these monkeys. You can venture outside the property without carrying a stick and the entire property is surrounded by razor wire and electric fencing. The plug points in my bathroom were glitchy and I was afraid to plug in the hotel's hair dryer. I heard that the Taj group is now upgrading this property from a Gateway to a SeleQtions, leading to more tariffs for the same amenities. All in all I suggest to drive here from Jaipur for lunch as it's only an hour away but staying here is simply...
