Having stayed at several Club Mahindra properties around the country, we expected the same standard from Gangtok CM. However, this stay was terribly disappointing. So much so that we had to check out after 1 night, instead of the 2 night stay that was booked. The website mentions that all rooms have balcony/sit-out. However, the first room we were checked into had none. Furthermore, the room had broken wardrobes, peeling paint, cobwebs, and extremely dingy lighting. The phone and electrical outlets were non- functional. After complaining to CM head-office, we were then hesitantly asked to move to another room. Sadly, this was also the same experience, albeit a little bigger room and with a balcony. To add to that, this room didn't have a geyser. The resort management informed us that this room's bathroom line was connected to the solar, but would require at least 20-30mins of running/wasting the water before hot water would start flowing. Mind you, this was in mid December, with temperatures at 2 to 4 celcius, and cloudy days not conducive for heating the solar heaters. After complaining about this, we were again told to just let the water run each time we need to use hot water (even if we needed it just for a quick hand or face wash). Can you believe the amount of water wasted!? Besides, let water run for 20 mins just to use it for 60 seconds?
Again, the overall finish of the room was more or less like a lodge (under the guise of "traditional sikkimese cottage architecture" - I dont know which traditional sikkimese cottage has cheap, peeling formica!). The bathtubs in both rooms were chipping and peeling, exhaust fans broken, switchboards damaged, and door handles broken. Have attached pictures of the said damage.
After seeing this, we were compelled to fetch for other options for stay in the city, since we figured that this was the standard across this property.
The ONLY saving grace was the food and staff in the restaurant, which has fetched this review at least 1 star.
I might add, that during checkout, not one question was asked about why we are checking out early and whether we were happy with the stay. Our 100s of calls to the reception was obvious that we weren't satisfied, but at checkout, there was no apology or reassurance.I am really not sure how there are so many positive reviews on google, but it is clear that all the negative reviews of this property have the same complaints about the standards.
As a member, I would strongly urge CM to either disown this property or undertake a...
Read moreMe and my wife stayed in CM Gangtok from 2nd Dec to 5th Dec 2014. The stay was awesome with picturesque view from the hotel (nothing else but hills were visible from the hotel). The staff receives a special recognition for their hospitality and friendly behavior. Travel desk provided us with 2 of their best drivers - Kunga and Sanjay who made our journey enjoyable even on bad roads (due to expansion of state highway, the roads are in really bad condition. So please ask for SUV even if it is only 2 people travelling from NJP to Gangtok or Bagdogra to Gangtok).
About resort: The resort has good amenities for entertainment. The food is good with a slightly hefty price tag (considering it is CM providing quality and class apart service). The room service is quick, room is provided with heater, it is cleaned and re-arranged daily, bathroom was big, nice and clean. The entertainment provided is good.
About travel: Since the roads are in bad condition it is advisable to book SUV. Small cars with small tires bump more and at the end of the day you get a back pain. We were fortunate to get Mahindra Xylo (Travelling to Club Mahindra in Mahindra Xylo..haha). The difference between Small Cars and SUV cost wise is Rs 500-800 (for pick up and drop from Bagdogra to Gangtok or NJP to Gangtok). My advise would be not to think of saving little for more comfort.
About sight seeing: We went to Nathula Pass at more than 14000 ft above sea level. It was a mind blowing experience. Kenchenjunga's view from a point (going towards Old Baba Harbhajan's Mandir) is exceptional !!!
About Gangtok: It is the cleanest city of India is what I would say. Clean and neat streets, friendly people. The MG Road in city gives a feel of Manchester city center.
Our overall experience in Gangtok with Club Mahindra was Enjoyable. I would definitely recommend to visit CM Gangtok for Soft Spoken and Friendly People, Neat and Clean Hotel & City and finally exotic experience of...
