We came to Mangroove Bay with high expectations and were sadly disappointed by our stay. We have been traveling around Southeast Asia for 4 months and this was supposed to be our last stop before going home with a splurge in our budget to get a private room and celebrate our trip. We ended up leaving earlier than planned due to some less than ideal circumstances that I can detail below. The staff were helpful and positive and the facilities seem to have been built thoughtfully. Some of the issues were out of their control which is tough but still is worth mentioning so others can be aware prior to visiting. We hope their business continues to grow but here is some feedback.
Pros: -our room was clean and maintained very well with gorgeous outdoor bathroom and shower -drinking water is readily available and free -the attached restaurant has great options with very clean kitchen, fast service, and the wait staff there are particularly sweet -nice service to transfer to Suberkima Hill Resort if desired to change it up -wifi was strong in all areas of the hostel -there is a high quality mosquito curtain on the bed that is very functional and needed
Cons: -the hostel is doing a major construction project right outside the cabins and behind the main building that is disruptive with cutting down coconut trees loudly during our stay - we understand the need to renovate/expand but it did ruin our peace entirely that we had no warning of before arrival -there is nothing at all walkable AND grab/gojek do not work here so unless you have a motorbike then you have to stay at the hostel (or resort) with the exception of any planned paid excursion -there is a nearby religious site that plays very loud prayers starting before 5am lasting for more than hour waking us up both mornings of our stay -it smells like burning trash beginning ~6pm for the rest of the night in the area and some issues during the day with this too yet less intense
Again, many of the cons are out of the control of the hostel but we came a really far way from the airport specifically to be on a more relaxed/quiet part of the island to arrive here for 5 days and only stayed 2 because we were not happy or calm. The manager talked with us directly and was incredibly understanding. We received a full refund for the days that we did not stay and a free breakfast. We felt that the employees really were apologetic of our experience and are appreciative of their recognition of the problems. We know they are trying their best. We hope with more time and infrastructure that this hostel and its surrounding area will be more appealing to a wide range of travelers. As of now, it seems best for digital nomads who need strong wifi, food on site and are ok with higher prices, and a motorbike to do their own exploring. Possibly for others who have funds/plans for many excursions to the nature around and want a home base for excursions as well. I wouldn’t recommend for couples or families that are simply looking...
Read moreWow what a gem!! The this place is so amazing. Tucked away in a gorgeous little corner, with a super friendly and welcoming local community, get ready to say hello to almost everyone you pass if you choose to leave the hotel- although you could totally just spend a few days on site if relaxing is what your after. The resort itself is modern and minimalistic without being cold. The staff are amazing, the food is out of this world good! I had the best Rueben sandwich and chicken katsu burger I’ve ever eaten. That’s no exaggeration! I think it’s sometimes hard to get a good sanga in Asia, but this place delivers the goods. The beautiful restaurant has a variety of seating options including a comfy day bed and couches, bar stools and high bench or standard tables. They also play a great variety of music, creating a really nice vibe and atmosphere to chill or work from. There is also a lovely pool with large hanging daybeds, and a kitchen and attached massive theatre room for guests to use if they wish. The food is really reasonably priced, as are the rooms. We assumed it would be much more expensive based on the look and service at the hotel. We stayed in a dorm room and they were really comfortable, for around $15 AUD a night. We did stand up paddle boarding for 2 hours for aprox $10 AUD. Another great thing about this place is there is a complimentary shuttle bus that will take you to their sister resort so you can also eat there or take part in group yoga up from a spectacular view point, have a massage, facial or use the hot and cold baths / Infrared sauna. This place is honestly totally worth the drive and I can’t fault it in any way! 10/10 🙏🩷 *another great feature of the hotel is being added to a WhatsApp group on arrival to allow easy communication with staff regarding anything from room service, booking activities or general inquiries. Read moreI stay here because I had a great experience at Sumberkima Hills Villas and they're under the same management. This hostel just opened and is located right where Metamorfosa office is - whom I adopted baby corals from several months ago.
I have to admit that this might just be the best and most well thought of hostel in the world!
Their shared "dorms" actually are in a capsule-hotel style set up - 8 beds in each room with shared en suite bathroom. Each bed gets its own pad-lockable cubby that's big enough to fit my Freediving fins bag.
These are located on the ground floor - surrounding the swimming pool.
The swimming pool is about 1.5M deep with edges that functions as loungers. There are also loungers outside the pool and a couple of swinging beds.
Mineral water refill tub is provided in each room.
There's a pantry next to the pool that's attached to the projector screen lounge and darts room.
All the private rooms are upstairs and there are several laptop/workstations at the ends of each floor.
At the rooftop they provide ample space to accommodate about 50 yoga mats. Looks amazing in the morning from up here, overlooking the sun rising over the horizon of the Java sea.
The entrance point is their restaurant - which is open for public from 7am to 10pm.
And the Metamorfosa Coral Rehab centre & the dive centre is just next to it.
Between the restaurant & the reception area, there's a café/bar and a ping-pong table adjacent.
I think they're also setting up a spot to play petanque/bocce balls.
All in all looking like the perfect place to organise an event -...
