First the plus points: the farmhouse is in the beautiful Wicklow mountains and we had a really warm welcome from the host. The rooms are clean and well kept, if a little outdated and in need of modernisation (eg the shower was over the bath with a shower curtain), but the bed was very comfortable. There was no TV in our room and we didn’t miss it, but some people may.||All very positive, but for modern day standards, more people need a strong / consistent wifi signal, something which wasn’t available here when we first arrived, although to be fair despite being intermittent on arrival, the signal was pretty robust after we got home from an evening out and the following morning. ||So it depends what you’re looking for. If you want solitude / peace and quiet or a base to walk round the beautiful Wicklow mountains in a traditional Irish farmhouse you could do much worse than stay in LoughDan House. If you want to have consistent, robust access to internet for whatever reason and up to date furnishings / showers cubicles / tv etc., you would probably find this place a bit frustrating if our initial experience of wifi connectivity was indicative. Despite all the other positive comments, because of the (seemingly) inconsistent wifi and the need to modernise, it pains me not to feel able to give 5*, as the owners are lovely,...
Read moreIf you are considering walking the Wicklow Way, I would highly encourage you to base your walk at the Lough Dan House. This is my second time staying here and intend it to be an annual tradition. The Byrne family are some of the kindest and hardest working people you will encounter. Their knowledge of the trails and history of the land will be a great aide to you on your hikes. By doing an all-inclusive self guided walking trip, you will avoid wasting time with airport transfer, having to pack up and move your bags each day, forage for lunch, and feeling unsettled. In addition, there are some stretches of the trail that pale in comparison to some of the walks around Lough Dan that you can do instead. Kanturk/ Scarr Mountain is an amazing walk you can do right from the house door. And there is no walk better than coming down Luggala Valley and around Lough Dan. You can access several parts of the Wicklow Way right out the door, and for those that may be a bit away such as the Glendalough-Spinc&Glenealo route, they can drop you at the trailhead and pick you up when you are finished. Theresa will also pack you a tasty lunch so you have no worries about finding food. The breakfasts and dinners are exceptional and the people you meet along the way make the journey priceless...
Read moreWe stayed here for one night and it is a very cute and charming place. When we arrived at 4pm we asked if we could have dinner that night and were told no and that we had to have had let them know ahead of time though we weren’t asked if we wanted dinner when we called to book. This was disappointing as it was a very narrow and windy drive (though beautiful) and raining so we were hoping to stay in for the rest of the evening. The rooms are clean. We weren’t given a key when brought to our room, we had to ask for it and the hosts seemed a bit insulted considering “they don’t host bad people.” The laundry was not included and cost us 20 euro, and packed lunch (sandwich, candy bar, juice box) was 15 euro a person. It cost us 200 euro for one night! Just didn’t seem worth that price based on our experience but overall nothing wrong with it just be mindful to either ask for dinner when you book or bring food with you if you’re not up for the drive into town...
