We spent 4 days here in October, 2019. We had a leased car so we found our way to the B&B with our GPS with no problems. The drive is lovely but be forewarned that you need to be comfortable driving on a road that climbs and has numerous switchbacks. We found ourselves hugging the side of the road when a car approached from the opposite direction. We are experienced mountain drivers and rather enjoy this kind of road but driving on it wasn't as easy as taking the mountain lift into town. Bad St. Isidor is not a fancy place but the rooms are clean and ours had a separate living area with a sofa and TV. Be aware that no Kleenex tissue is provided nor are there any washcloths, bar soap or shampoo. Since other places we stayed also did not provide tissues, we were not surprised and had a box with us, but you should know this and be prepared. Our room was #3. While large it has some issues. The beds were hard as were the pillows but everyone has their own softness preference so I don't hold this against them. My husband was comfortable but I was not. The main problem with this room is that it is above the conservatory/dining room. As a result, people hang around outside smoking. If the windows are open, the smoke will waft into the room. We also noticed persistent kitchen odors. Having said all of this, we would stay again. First of all, the value is great. We paid for half board and had breakfast and dinner there. We also received transportation vouchers to use with the lift and the city buses. In addition, we received a museum pass. We used the museum pass but not the transportation because we wanted our car with us for drives into the Dolomites. Now let's discuss food...it is terrific. Breakfast every morning had a vast array to choose from but our favorite was the local speck and the homemade cornetti. Dinner was always something different and a fixed menu. We never left hungry. One night was beet risotto, chicken cordon bleu, and apple cupcake with cream. Another night was salad, pizza, beef goulash with potato croquettes. Our third dinner was spaghetti amertriciana, baked chicken, ice cream and warm raspberries. And our last dinner was puff pastry filled with veggies, local salmon and tiramisu. Everything is freshly made by their in-house cook. The staff are friendly, the food is excellent and the value is hard to beat. We would simply want a different room away from the smokers and kitchen smells the next time we visit. The location of Bolzano and the Bad St. Isidor is great for drives around the Dolomites. We saw quite a lot in our 4 day stay and cannot...
Read moreWe stayed here for 4 days... it was a really pleasant surprise! The access road is challenging at times especially if two cars from opposite directions cross paths! Hey, it's doable!😊 We got to the location in the evening and didn't know what to expect, especially when we came across a private party of some sort...lots of people and lots of noise! We got room no 7... really small and cold! Not a good first impression!
But then the dinner was the best surprise, the restaurant as well as I could get a glimse of what was to come! Not to mention that I kindly asked for a room with a view over the valley and we were promised a solution for the next day!
The rooms aren't extraordinary and it was a bit chilly over the night (for some reason the central heating wasn't working) but hey, it's well compensated with the view from each morning!
The breakfast is generous with fruits, a wide variety of cheeses, youghurt, jams, meat, eggs, fresh bread, cakes etc. The dinner was always the highlight of the meals! There's always a wide variety of fresh veggies to make your own salad but the host makes wonderfully tasty starters and main courses! Each of them delicious and visually tempting! We had spinach ravioli, beetroot dumplings with cheese sause, risotto and funghi, penne with deer meat or cordon bleu, veal steak, roasted chicken with amazing side dishes and sauses!! For extra 12€ it's totally worth it to have the dinner at their restaurant!!
The hosts are helpful, discrete, always attentive and catering to their guests' needs!! I totally recommend this place! The view of the mountains while having your breakfast and enjoying good food with good...
Read moreThis was the first place we stayed at on our newest European vacation and although there was a bit of a problem with the road leading up to the pension (as in it was closed from 9 am until 6 pm) everything else was wonderful. It sits on a hillside in the midst of apple orchards and has a spectacular view over Bolzano and the adjacent mountains. The room was large and clean, the bed comfortable, and the balcony very nice. The bathroom was a little small but that seems to be the way it is for these pensions over here so we've gotten used to it. If you're a big person, however, it could present a problem. The breakfast was good, with a decent selection of home-made hams and bacon. You could get eggs ordered as you like and there was plenty of fruit and homemade breads and yogurts. We had the half-board option and thus had dinner also. The dining room has a great view and the food was very well prepared with a good variety from day to day. The staff was super friendly (except for the father at first, but he warmed up toward the end) and the best part is that you get a local area card that can be used to ride all the trams, cable-cars, trains, and buses in the area FOR FREE. That by itself is well worth coming here. We hiked all over the place using the free card. We will definitely come back here and are already planning a smaller trip just to come back to this region because it was so much fun. If you come to Balzano, stay here. It's...
