My mother and I spent 4 nights at the Castello di Petroia in July 2022. My experience was completely magical. We were visiting during a historic heat wave ( unfortunately) with highs 104 F! ) The staff did everything possible to keep us cool- taking special care to offer my mother extra fans. The rooms remained a comfortable cool temperature in spite of the heat. I would imagine during normal weather the heat would not be a problem at all as there are wonderful breezes off the valley. The castle feels like a real castle! It is like staying in a slice of history but most of the rooms are quite modern. The grounds are beautiful with magnificent views of the hillside. The pool is lovely and refreshing- a short walk down hill from the castle. There are lovely trails to explore but since the castle is at the top of the hill-- what goes down must come back up :)||||The staff of the castle was incredibly kind and accommodating. They arranged a taxi to Gubbio for a day visit ( definitely recommend! 20 min away). The restaurant was lovely for dinner. We ate there all 4 nights. There was plenty variety on the menu not to duplicate. the food was delicious and very authentic---quite reasonable prices and exquisite wines. one night there was a BBQ of roasted meats ( amazing) and then a star gazing lecture. During the summer they serve dinner outside on the patio in between the castle buildings- just lovely. ||||The breakfast is a large spread. they do not serve lunch at the castle- but i would stash away a small plate of meat, cheese and fruit in my mini-fridge for later. that was quite sufficient. ||||I also enjoyed a morning of truffle hunting with Stella-- it was a super fun experience! It is definitely an active experience on the steep hiking trails. ||||Castello di Petroia is one of the top places I have stayed in Italy. It is still family owned. We would see the owners at dinner every night-- it really felt like you were there as their special guest. ||||This is the hotel to visit if you want to take in the slow pace of Umbria ( which is what it is all about!) Go and contemplate the history and beauty of this ancient land. Eat local food, drink delicious wine, hike in the hills and dream under the stars. ||||I hope to...

Came here on a painting course organised by The Winslow Art Centre. |We were the only guests so had the run of the place. We were so well looked after and fed. |The spread at breakfast was above and beyond what you would expect. I had to be very strict with myself. Nothing was too much trouble, even down to clearing all the heavy tables and chairs in the dining room to make a temporary studio on a rainy day. |The rooms were very spacious and all very different. I didn’t have a bath but prefer a shower anyway but I believe most of the other rooms had them. My bed was very comfortable and changed regularly. |I would have liked a kettle in my room but that’s a minor detail and I’m sure if I had asked, I’d have got one.|If travelling independently, a car would be essential as the castle is rather remote but that is the charm...

I met my daughter's family (2 adults and 2 teen girls) at the Castello di Petroia while they were taking a longer trip in Europe. My suite was the Imperiale delle Trasparenze, which consisted of a large sitting room, king size bedroom, and a glass walled bath area with shower, the usual facilities and a Jacuzzi. There was also a private terrace off the bedroom. The view across the hills was spectacular! The outdoor restaurant was so good that we ate there all seven nights. The server, Paolo, anticipated our every desire. The location is central to Gubbio, Assisi and Perugia. We went truffle hunting with a guide and his trained dog, and came bak to the hotel with a sizable number of truffles, which were served to us at a special dinner that evening. I could go on, but let's leave some of the other features for you...

Pleasantly surprised. Great views. Interesting old castle. Lots of history and art all over the walls. Dinner was of a high standard. Rooms were quite large and comfortable. Lots of nice countryside nearby but you will need to drive to other restaurants. Friendly cats to pet. Whatever we asked for they would help, good service eg. We asked for softer pillows, bowl of fruit and to cook some food for our baby. All met with a smile.

Great view, good food and big, comfortable rooms. There's some friendly cats roaming around on the area and in the reception so be aware if you're allergic. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Only the wifi didn't work so well and the walls are very thin, so I suggest to bring some earplugs unless you want to listen to your neighbors watching TV or the dogs in the room upstairs running and playing around all night.

Beautiful castle bursting with history and panoramic views. It is very dramatic and romantic. The tower room is an experience, lucky we had it only for 1 night, as more than that may have turned an experience into a challenge. The dinner is excellent, but the aperitivo is a bit pricey for a rural affair - 8€ for a small plate of cheese and tomatoes and 10€ for a spritz!
