Situated in woodland, Pension Bergcot is a lovely place to stay in Tateshina. Double bedrooms come with two single beds - they are small but cosy and come with a compact bathroom with bath and toilet. There is also one tatami room option. A lovely ofuro (bath) is located on the first floor for communal use, and is open 24h.||||The public areas of the pension are lovely - there is a lovely decked area outside where you can sit in the sunshine and watch the local wildlife (lots of birds in the daytime). At night, the pension is visited by all sorts of animals - tanuki, ten, deer, badgers... there are big torches inside that allow you to view the animals outside. The wood-burning fire in the communal lounge makes it a lovely cosy place to sit and escape the cold in winter.||||The food served is excellent - breakfast consists of bread, yoghurt, jams (all homemade) as well as a hot option; dinner is equally delicious Japanese-style French food, made with produce from the owners' allotment. ||||The hosts are really lovely and speak some English. If you're visiting the area, it probably makes most sense to come with a car. However, even without a car, there a some lovely walks nearby where you can enjoy spectacular views. The couple that runs it speaks English, a surprise. Our host has traveled in India, unusual for a Japanese I have been told. He picked up some interesting cooking ideas during his travels, much to our delight. The meals were a treat, with some unusual dishes as well as more traditional Japanese fare.||||The dining area has large picture windows with views of several feeding shelves for birds, squirrels, and even a pair of Japanese Badgers that showed up for leftovers.||||The rooms are small, but clean and comfortable and have in-suite toilets. The two bathrooms are shared, but come with hot tubs for soaking, which were much appreciated after a day afield.||||WiFi is available in the dining room, but the signal did not...
