Escape to Izu Villa for Lunar New Year: Tokyo Departure, Feb 10-11

We stayed in the animal villa, and the capybara experience was truly amazing – there were plenty of well-kept, friendly capybaras right at our doorstep. The villa itself was clean and comfortable, though it offered little privacy since it was essentially one large room. There was also no washing machine or dryer in the villa, though these were available in the reception area. Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing. On alternate nights it was served buffet-style (which was not specified at the time of booking), and the quality was so poor that after trying it once, we chose to eat elsewhere the next night despite already having paid for the meals. At check-out, they asked me to pay even though I had already paid online. It took them about 20 minutes to find the payment and complete the check-out.

My daughter and I spent one night with the capybaras in September 2024. It was a fabulous experience and we wish that we’d booked more nights. Our villa had six beds so we could have taken friends to enjoy the experience too.

The location has been renamed Izu Resort Villa (https://izu-resort-villa.jp/) as most guests are there to interact with the Capybara. While the tennis courts are available and numerous, I did not see anyone use the tennis courts during our stay. ||||You can arrange for the hotel to pick you up from the nearby train station or drive to the facility. The coastline is quite beautiful in the area so I would encourage having a car. Moreover the hotel only serves breakfast and dinner so you will have to find lunch on your own if you desire. Thankfully guest parking is free and plentiful near the main building. ||||While the front desk only speaks Japanese they are familiar with how to handle the needs of English speaking foreigners. They use apps on their phones to translate when they are able to communicate and I would encourage downloading Google Translate or similar app on your phone as well. WiFi is free and I found it to be sufficiently fast in the room and main building. ||||The Capybaras are the main attraction of course and they are accessible with varying degrees 24/7 at their discretion. At the most restrictive times, guests of the 3 capybara villas are requested to remain on their private decks and let the capybaras come to them if they desired. We found that the capybaras were more eager to interact with us at every opportunity and we were the ones who needed a break! They are very friendly and agreeable but definitely do not wear any clothes that you treasure as they will chew up your clothes if you remain stationary for more than several seconds. This particularly true in the morning before they've had breakfast at around 10am. Who can blame them? To combat their hunger you are given two complimentary cups of carrots each day of your stay. Extra cups of carrots are available for 500 yen per cup from the front desk. ||||Breakfast and dinner were reasonable for the price. During our stay, the meals were served as a buffet primarily featuring Japanese cuisine with some western options. I would highly recommend going when it opens since they don't have many guests it seems they just make one batch of everything - not that it's cold but it's just not hot out of the kitchen fresh. ||||There are coin operated washers and dryers which we found worked well and a frankly a great value at 100 yen per wash or 30 minutes of drying. It is near the onsen which is partitioned by gender. It provided a wonderful opportunity to bond with my son privately in a relaxing environment - just us guys. The front desk also rents board games free of charge to guests if you desire - just ask.||||We visited at the urging of our children who were thrilled with their experience to engage with Capybaras in a way few can. I think you will be too. An unexpected and welcome benefit was the calming effect the capybaras had on us...
