Good location for hiking , quiet and peaceful location , a cable car that you operate yourself to get to the hot springs . While we were there it snowed and it was great , lying in the outside hot spring (onsen) while the snow was falling was magical and also i had the place to myself . ( springs are not mixed , woman and men have separate springs ) Good hiking trails ( waterfall , mountain water springs and a lovely small temple all within an hour from the hotel, great scenery and quiet only me and my partner on the trails ) also dinner is a must , traditional Japanese dishes . A magical and totally relaxing experience and the best of the Japanese service , effeciency to boot ! take the bullet train to Karasawa from tokyo and then 20 minutes on a local train from Karasawa (...

   Read moreThis is a lovely ryokan where time stands still, and one can engage in mindfulness, digital detox, and enjoy the surroundings. The surrounding area is one with nature, and the place is still extremely cool in summer. The lovely experience of soaking in the hot spring under a light drizzle made the stay memorable, not forgetting the special ride to reach the onsen.
The meals are lovely, with vegetables being the main attraction. Pro tips for those coming with young kids: Just order the Ă la carte meal. My kids' favourites are karaage and French fries.
