My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in August on the 20th through the 22nd. We had such a wonderful time. The owner or manager was such a pleasure to meet and the entire staff was so pleasant to us. The ryokan is practically hidden in the mountains. You have to take a train from Unazuki Onsen then walk about 15-20 minutes on a trail. If the trail is closed due to the weather the staff can provide you with a guide. We had a guide take us there to the ryokan because of the rain when we arrived. They were all so nice to us. On the way back after our stay we took the hiking trail. Be prepared to hike a bit and to be in good shape. ||The food was so wonderful and very traditional. The ladies prepared such a wonderful meal for us during breakfast and dinner. We loved the mountain vegetables and the sake with fish liquor the best! ||The Onsen outside was beautiful and magical. We cannot express it anymore in words because it is something you have to experience on your own. Once in a lifetime experience. ||Also, there isn’t any WiFi, private bathrooms or television at the ryokan so be prepared. It did not bother us. We loved it!||There is WiFi along the different train station stops and when you are at the Unazuki Onsen town about 20 minutes away by train after...
Read moreStaying at Kuronagi Onsen was an absolute delight and highlight of our recent 2023 Japan trip and one of out Top10 experiences after MANY trips to Japan. After alighting from the scenic and iconic Kurobe Gorge train at Kuronagi station it was only a quick 1.5km(?) hike along a lush mountain trail to get there - it felt remote - located down in a stunning gorge. We were met at the front door by the friendly and awesome manager of Kuronagi and he directed us to our riverside/waterfallside room. We felt we were allocated the best view/room in the house directly overlooking the multiple waterfalls immediately outside our room below. Kuronagi is not large - there were only 4 other couples (Japanese) staying there at the time. Dinner (and breakfast) were Kaiseki style and both were just amazing. For the entire price of about ¥11000/night/pp (including room and meals) we felt this was really good value for such a unique place. I highly recommend staying at Kuronagi Onsen and we will definitely...
Read moreAbsolutely breathtaking, and a true highlight of our 2023 Japan trip!
A hidden getaway that's only accessible by train then 20-minute mountain hike! But it's well-worth it, because you have this gorgeous onsen in the middle of lush mountainous forest along with home-cooked traditional Japanese meals.
This is where you want to go if you want to bathe naked in a boiling geothermal onsen while it's 2 degrees outside. A unique experience, alongside lovely staff and accommodations. (We were even lucky enough to see a lot of wild snow monkeys!!)
It's a little antithetical to the vibe of the place, but I can confirm our pocket WiFi had...
