I came here to stay the night after skiing at Nikko Yumoto. Given that the very low price included both breakfast and dinner as well as lift passes and equipment rental discount vouchers, I wasn't expecting much of anything. However, the dinner they prepared was surprisingly very good and very filling. The meat for the little hotpot was tender and tasty, the fish was fried excellently, and the salmon sashimi was delicious without the slightest bit of fishiness. It wasn't extravagant, but well beyond expectations for the price.
Breakfast, in contrast, likely had tamagoyaki that came frozen from a wholesaler. I guess that's where they're cutting costs to keep up with dinner.
The moment you step into the hotel, it smells like sulphur thanks to the hot springs. They are quite stinky! But it felt great to soak after skiing the whole day and to steep in the rotenburo in the morning the next day.
The faucets in the bathing area will randomly run very hot then cold, even if you're the only one using the taps. Also, the the wall-mounted hair dryer will get weaker if someone else uses the other one... So if it takes you a while to dry your hair, better to just do it in your room. (The rooms are extremely low in humidity and the heater is very strong, so everything dries very quickly!)
The bathroom in our room didn't have a bidet, so while the toilet seat wasn't freezing, it wasn't warm either. It also hasn't been properly cleaned in a while, as it smells faintly of urine. (They're not cleaning all the way under the inner rim, where it all collects...) Room itself was spacious for two, with plenty of hangers and storage area.
I wouldn't come here for a romantic getaway - there are tons of families with loud children, and because it's cheap, there are also plenty of groups of 20-somethings (who will clog up the baths and scream drunkenly well into the evening). But if it's just to stay for skiing, trekking, or other outdoor activities, it's...

Read moreHotel has a great location close to local activities and sights. The hotel is reasonably old with old style non-Japanese very large rooms. The hotel has both indoor and outdoor hot pools. It was pretty neat after you leave the hot pool late in the afternoon in your dressing gown, we then proceeded to dinner in our dressing gowns. And at least 90 percent of the guests in the hotel restaurant were dressed the same way. The food and beer was good. The hotel has numerous vending machines where all sorts of drinks, snacks, noodles and ice creams...
