Although we don't speak the lingo this hotel was so friendly and accommodating, it was never a problem.||||Set right on the shore a little distance from Beppu Port on Nishinoshima, we had a cottage-style accommodation separate to the main building. There were about a dozen of these onsite. There is a shuttle bus to Beppu which pretty much operates whenever you book it.||||The staff were very gracious and helpful from the dear man on the front desk to the manager and dining room staff. And the meals were really something to behold. We had probably the best seafood here in our many trips to Japan. The buri (yellowtail) must have been in season, so it featured in many dishes which I was very happy about. The biggest oysters I have seen (four bites to eat it for me, anyway) served many ways, the sashimi perfect. The only seafood that I wasn't keen on was the sazai (turban shell) which is a local specialty but a bit too chewy for me.||One breakfast we had a raw egg served with the food which I know the Japanese often serve with the rice to mix it in. We didn't eat it and the next morning the egg was served up scrambled for us. Very attentive and proactive service!||We had arranged for a hire car through Nicola at the tourist office and it was delivered to the hotel. The hotel staff attended to the documentation for the hire car company which I didn't expect. Nice.||||When we first arrived from Matsue by the Rainbow ferry it was getting dark and we got off one stop too early at Hishiura on the neighbouring island (there are no identifying signs on any of the ports). When the shuttle bus didn't arrive I phoned the hotel and between them and the tourist office at Hishiura they quickly realised what happened (we are dealing with idiot gaijins here!). We were ushered to a small boat ferry which took us across about a ten minute ride to Beppu. There was a taxi to meet us which took us to the hotel and they wouldn't take any money for it.||||The hotel has plenty of parking space, nice roomy accommodation with bathroom (and a loft!). They have wi-fi in the main lounge room but not in the rooms.||||We had the best time on Nishinoshima and would really recommend...
Read moreReso Oki Rosage is on the beautiful, quiet island of Nishinoshima. It's about a 15 minute drive from the main ferry terminal, so contact the hotel before arriving or take a taxi. Transport is extremely limited on the islands, and the hotel is in a fairly remote area, so you need to plan ahead.||||My room was large and comfortable. The main attraction was a spectacular view over the ocean. Breakfast and dinner are served in the main dining area, and are always delicious.||||The wifi was unreliable in the room, but ok in the lobby area. I also found it hard to get any mobile reception in the room, but that's part of being in such a...
Read moreI actually stayed there in 1995. I believe it is/was a youth hostel type establishment, which is why we stayed there - being a poor student and all at the time (I attended Shimane Univ. for 1 year). It is a traditional Japanese house with a detacthed onsen on the property. The hostess was very accomidating and I remember diner and breakfast were included and the food was wonderful. We all had some chores to do and I think I gathered firewood or something. There is a pier nearby where theferry dropped us off so we didn't have to walk all the way from town. Definitely a place I would love to go back to...
