Living in Singapore for many years, I have decided to stay at the Ofunato Hot Spring Hotel to enjoy the hot spring, seafood of Sanriku area and rejuvenate myself / my family. I heard that Sanriku area has been designated as GEO Park that shows the history of earth activity over 500 million years. ||||Sanriku fishing ground is said to be one of the world's three biggest fishing grounds and it is easy to imagine that tasty fishes are swimming around the Rias coast line. The seafood coming out at the hotel dinner was awesome in taste, freshness and volume, and I felt the happiness of eating seafood near the fishing ground accompanied by great Sake.||||I had the opportunity to meet the owner of the hotel and I learned that he is a fisherman. No doubt that the seaweed which the owner picked up in the morning and the seafood which were chosen by the Connoisseur of fisherman are superb. I was forced to temporarily stop my slimming diet. I guess that the affordable price is also generated by his great network.||||The Hotel stands at the cape in Oofunato Bay and the sunrise rising from the horizon of the Pacific Ocean is exceptional and there was worth getting up early. The sunrise seen from the outdoor bath was also wonderful, and the large public bath where the sunrise light poured in looked very mysterious. ||||Japanese hospitality style service is wonderful and I would like to revisit with my Singaporean friends next time. Ofunato Onsen...
Read moreIt’s really hard to beat a location like this if you’re in the area, and if you’re hiking on the Michinoku Coastal Trail, you’re in the area.
Whether you speak Japanese well or not, the staff are very welcoming and are helpful with local recommendations or questions.
The location, while not exactly walking distance to the main city is beautiful for sunrises and viewing the bay. Waking up to the sunrise and the oyster farms in the bay is simply breathtaking.
I did not have dinner or breakfast so I can not comment on that, but they have a complimentary coffee machine that is very much appreciated.
They have a nice little kid play area for children in the lobby and a nice little shop with local goods.
There are very clean washing machines that are free to use if you’re a hiker that needs some clean clothes, a small detail that shows how much the owners have considered all kinds of guests that want to stay the night here.
The onsens are very well kept and the outdoor onsen gives a great view of the bay with the call of seagulls in the area, especially in the evening. Lots of information in the hotel in both English and Japanese as well. If you don’t jump in the onsen, the bath rub and shower in the rooms has an excellent window to the bay as well.
Overall would highly highly recommend Ofuna Onsen if you’re staying in the area, evening if you’re not a long distance hiker in the...
Read moreWe spent two nights at Ofunato onsen recently. Ofunato is a lovely seaside town. The onsen is well known for its plentiful seafood and it doesnt disappoint. large amounts of fresh, delicious and interesting seafood, and seaweed. Dinner is huge and breakfast not far behind. The baths themselves are fairly standard - two good sized inside baths - one hot and one tepid and a hot outside bath facing the ocean. The view is very beautiful. The rooms are typical of a good quality onsen. Unfortunately, despite having been recently built after the tsunami, the walls are thin. You can hear next door, in the hallways and above. Our sleep was constantly disrupted by loud talking, kids running wild down the hall (at 3am onwards) and slamming of doors all night. It was a significant disappointment, given the desire to relax in the onsen followed by a good nights sleep. Surprisingly given the price which is high, we were not supplied with new slippers, so you are required to reuse other's slippers. There is no shower in the room. Also no water bottles supplied. Amenities in the room were very limited. Overall, its a nice onsen but if you run into noisy families, its not what you will expect. As a destination, I would not recommend it but given our family live relatively close, it was worth a visit. Too many other options that compete with the food and offer spectacular views without the...
