We’ve stayed here probably 20 times over the last 10 years as it’s close to family. The facilities and rooms have always been great, and service has been fine. Unfortunately in recent years it seems there are fewer individual and family guests and a big focus on large busloads of ill mannered tourists. Our last stay a few nights ago we had a late check in and were looking forward to soaking in the bath. When we got to the bath, it was in a shocking state from the other guests. The bath was foaming because someone had put soap in it. The bowls and seats were strewn about. Doors that said “do not open” had been left open and insects were flying about. People had left their own dirty underwear and clothes on the ground and sink area. It was very sad to see such a nice facility so badly treated. I’ve never seen it like this before. I couldn’t go in the bath that night. It’s not the staffs fault that their guests disregard common decent manners, let alone Japanese bath customs, but it’s the hotel management that have their eye on lucrative tour buses from overseas that have ruined this once lovely facility. I have changed my rating from a previous 4 stars to 1, and won’t be back until they put pressure on their group customers or the tour companies to show more class. It was really sad, and a waste of...
Read moreI've been to Japan twice on package tours and stayed for a total of 8 nights, and this has been the only hotel which did not provide tea and coffee packets in the room. It wouldn't have been that bad if the hotel hadn't stated explicitly that they only provided those things for free for local individual guests only. Guests who were part of a tour needed to pay extra. I've read other reviews and understood that some foreign tourists can be really ill-mannered, but if the hotel decides to receive tours, they shouldn't discriminate against them like that. The staff were also very unwelcoming towards us, while they always smiled and greeted native Japanese guests. I'd always been a big fan of the hospitality services in Japan until this, which was really disappointing.
Dinner was an all-you-can-eat buffet which lacked variety although the quality of some dishes was great.
However, what was lost in service was made up for in its excellent view of Mt Fuji in the morning. The free onsen...
Read moreWe stayed here one night to explore the Hakone area close by. I think this is one of a newer crop of stylish business/budget hotels which have been appearing in Japan in the last few years. Gone are the days when you had to put up with a dingy little room with not much else available. The Hotel Just One is quite a smart looking hotel for its price, and the room we stayed in was very nice and reasonably big. Missed the breakfast in the morning, but the cafe attached next door did an excellent teriyaki chicken pizza for brunch. The location is central to everything. 10-15 mins to Gotemba for the outlet mall. 15 mins or so to Hakone, and half an hour or so to Fuji Safari park and other attractions around Mt. Fuji. Came by car so not sure about train access, though there appeared to be a train...
