Odaira Onsen Takimiya — Hotel in Yonezawa

This is an absolutely fantastic onsen ryokan. With pretty much no cell phone signal that penetrates the deep valley, it is perfect for those who really want to get away from it all. It's not that far but you really are deep in the mountains.

The natural outdoor baths here are amazing. They are fenced on 3 sides and you sign up for time slots to use them privately. If people are trekking to the incredible waterfalls above the inn they will probably be able to see you, but people here are extremely adept at averting their gaze to avoid embarrassment.

The food is highly rated here and you can opt for Yonezawa Wagyu Beef or freshly caught trout dinners. They were unable to accommodate vegan and vegetarian diners, but allowed us to cook up our own vegan food in the dining area and suppliec us with copious amounts of delicious rice.

Transport from Yonezawa is available on request, but there is a final 20m walk over uneven steep ground and across a suspension bridge to reach the inn that...

After walking up the steep winding road, Odaira Onsen was waiting for us. This cute and retro Japanese style Onsen Ryokan was absolutely wonderful. No satellite connection so say goodbye to your phone and hello to the amazing nature all around you. I think I had the most relaxing time of the year here. We arrived and first decided to see the big waterfall which was really cool. Then after our mini adventure we had our first bath to ourselves. Being fully surrounded by nature while taking the outdoor bath made me feel things that are hard to describe with words. This was the first time I really felt 100% connected to nature. Your naked after all 😂 I think ridding your self from the shield of clothes opens your heart up to really heal and relax for once. It's really something that I'll recommend. The sleep that I had after taking multiple baths and feeling a bit tipsy from the Yonezawa sake Toko was the best I had all year of 2022. It was just amazing. No words. I will happily go again. Leaving this wonderful little Ryokan left me with some sad emotions but we must go...

登山をやらない自分の行動範囲では、訪問難易度は上位の宿でした。||米沢八湯の一つで、米沢駅からレンタカーを借りての訪問です。途中までは白布温泉へ行くのと同じ道。看板に導かれて途中から分かれた道を進みます。暫くは里山の風景が続いた後、最後の集落を境に未舗装の道に突入。狭い林の中を抜ける未舗装の道をすすみます。少しづつ道幅も更に狭まり、勾配もきつくなっていきます。更にカーブのペースも短く、アプローチを間違えると車の底を擦りかねません。なかなかのルート。両サイドの木々に覆われ、勾配もあり、轍を頼りにするしかない様な狭い視界が続きます。ガードレールもありません。初めて視界が開けたと思ったら、崖から見えたのは先ほどまでいた米沢の市街地らしき風景。それが既に下界のものとなっています。つづら折りが終わったと思ったら、山道にしては珍しい長いストレートの道にかわります。カーブは無くなり勾配も少し緩やかになりましたが、それでもまだ高度をあげています。最後の集落を過ぎてから30分近く走り、ようやく宿の看板を見つけました。車はここに駐車してくださいというような意味合いのことが書かれています。たいへんな道でしたが、結局1台もすれ違いませんでした。駐車場と思われるスペースに車を停めたら、ここから先は徒歩のみです。車ではずっと上りっぱなしだったのですが、徒歩はずっと下りっぱなしです。ゆっくり降りないと膝をやってしまいそうな下り坂で、谷底を目指しているような感じです。車の時は時折「↑大平温泉」のような看板が道沿いにあったのですが、徒歩の区間はなし。途中で不安感は正直感じました。15分くらい歩き、最後の最後に吊り橋を渡ってようやく到着というのも、最高の演出になっています。明朝の帰りには車を停めているところまで、この道を登らなくてはならないかと思うとゾッとします。||同じ米沢八湯の内、姥湯温泉、滑川温泉にも過去行ったことがありますが。甲乙つけがたい秘湯地です。あちらは駅（峠駅）から宿の送迎バス、こちらは自走で米沢駅から車で1時間弱（内、半分以上は山道）、降りて徒歩15と、自分自身の大変さは、大平温泉の方が両湯を凌駕しています。||到着してからも、秘湯感を常に味わえます。テレビがありません。冷蔵庫もありません。クーラーもありません。携帯もいりません。自販機もありません。洗面所トイレ別です。（夕食用時の注文用のビールやジュースやお茶はあるので、夜遅くなる前なら買っておくことはできます。）微弱ですが持っていたモバイルWi-Fiがかろうじてアンテナがたっていたのが、唯一の世間とのつながりでした。ここで一晩過ごすかと思うとそれだけでスリルを感じるような場所です。||お風呂は、やはりこの宿のシンボルともいうべき露天が最高です。お湯は思ったほど熱めではなく、適温と感じました。山に囲まれ、渓流を目の前にしての入浴は、最高としか言いようがありません。山の夜のせいか、夕食を過ぎると露天を利用する方はぐんと減ります。夕朝のように景色は見えませんが、独占するならこの時間帯です。||食事もこの宿の場所を考えれば、感謝せずにはいられません。食材や調味料の調達だけでもたいへんなことだと思います。||翌朝は車のあるところまで戻ります。覚悟はしていたのですが、それでもきつかったですね。結局行きの倍近い30分弱かかりました。最後まで秘湯感を満喫できる宿でした。||季節（８月後半）のせいか、山道でも宿でも見かけるのはトンボと蝶くらいで、アブや蜂...
