This camp is located in the Amboseli National Park. We were here mid-September and the weather was perfect though a bit chilly in the early mornings (lows in the 40's and highs in the 80's)
ATMOSPHERE: We were greeted by the smiling faces of the managers Andrea & his wife Nicola. The open-air and thatched roof lobby, lounge & restaurant overlook a watering hole, the plains, with Mt. Kilimanjaro as the gorgeous backdrop. There's a fire pit that's lit nightly on the trail leading to the 20 or so tents, as well as a pool.
CHECK IN: We filled out a short form, then received a briefing of the camp by a young woman. Everyone was friendly, professional, and welcoming.
THE TENT: The heavy duty canvas tent is set atop a wood deck and fastened to supports above by a permanent thatched structure which helps the tent stay cool during the day. There are screen windows and doors which can be zipped open or close. No TV or a/c. The bathroom is a permanent structure that's cleverly attached to the tent and boasts concrete walls. We had a king sized bed which was firm & very comfortable, though the pillows were flat. There was only 1 power outlet for charging devices (the lobby lounge has a power strip if need be.) The room has electric lighting. There were zero bugs. The tent attendant actually turns down the room and sprays for insects nightly. All normal amenities were available but no ironing board. The tent was crisp & clean.
BATHROOM: The concrete & slate shower has low but decent water pressure. The water is heated by solar panels so don't waste it, and we never ran out. There's dual basins (yay!) and all amenities except for a hair dryer. If you need to use one, it has to be done in the lobby bathroom due to power concerns. The water was safe to bathe in as well as drink which was great. Cleanliness was top notch.
WIFI: Free. The signal is strongest in the lobby & lounge areas though the camp info books suggest not using electronic devices in the area. A lot of us did and it wasn't a problem. We were in tent #1 and had okay reception.
RESTAURANT: Highly skilled chefs! Everything was so delicious. Having Italian cuisine in Kenya was great. Lasagna, garlic pasta, lamb, steak, and omelettes were all good. The lounge & bar is open 24/7, something that seems pretty common in Kenya.
LAUNDRY: They offer free laundering with a max of 6 articles of clothing per tent (not sure if it's per day as the instructions didn't specify.) It's hand washed and line dried. And they do not launder underwear but provide detergent in the bathroom for you to do.
ACTIVITIES: Do read the camp's info book in your tent. It provides useful advice & tips on everything and some things that you'd never expect. Most services are free for packaged guests and a fee for non-packaged guests.
Sunrise breakfast - Departure is at 6:30am. The camp sets up tables & chairs on the plains, along with coffee, tea, cereals, fruits, bacon, sausage, beans, and a personal chef for made-to-order eggs. So beautifully done! You then continue on your morning safari.
Sundowner - After your afternoon safari, you drive up onto a high bluff for snacks & beverage of your choice (preordered.) The camp set up chairs and served us our beverages. It's a 360° view of the plains. Simply breathtaking!
CHECK OUT: We just up and left. Because we were on a package, mostly everything was included, and we paid as we went along.
SERVICE: Everyone was friendly & welcoming.
Our driver & guide Ali was awesome. Very patient, skilled and informative and worked super hard to find us game & sunrises and sunsets.
OVERALL: Gorgeous views, nice facilities, excellent food & service. Highly...
Read moreWe stayed at Elewana’s Tortilis Camp for two nights in March 2025, and it was without a doubt one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life.||From the moment we landed at the Amboseli airstrip, the service was exceptional. Our driver greeted us with a beautifully arranged coffee and tea station, immediately setting the tone for a stay filled with thoughtful touches and warm hospitality.||The staff, especially the hotel manager, were incredibly kind, professional, and deeply knowledgeable about the savannah and its wildlife. The camp itself is luxurious yet perfectly in harmony with its natural surroundings. The food was delicious, the bar offered a wide range of drinks, and the views, especially from the restaurant and bar, were simply breathtaking, with Mount Kilimanjaro standing proudly in the distance.||The game drives were absolutely phenomenal. The open-sided jeeps were comfortable and perfect for photography. Our guide, Dixon, was amazing, friendly, insightful, and determined to help us spot everything we were hoping to see. One evening, we had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of watching a pride of 11 lions prepare to hunt, all while the sun set behind snow-capped Kilimanjaro. To make it even more special, Dixon surprised us with an aperitif setup: charcuterie, snacks, wine, and soft drinks, served right there in the wild. Pure magic.||Another highlight was the exclusive bush breakfast organized by the camp. A live cooking station, full buffet setup, and proper tables, all in the middle of the savannah. It felt like a scene from a movie.||Our tent was a luxurious haven. It felt like a proper hotel suite under canvas, with a very comfortable king-size bed and a fully equipped bathroom. The staff came by regularly to ensure it remained spotless and insect-free, making us feel safe and well cared for.||I wholeheartedly recommend Elewana’s Tortilis Camp to anyone seeking a unique, high-end safari experience. We’re already planning our next adventure with Elewana—this time to the Masai Mara!||Thank you to the entire team for making our first safari so incredibly special. You made it a memory we’ll cherish...
Read moreOur stay at Elewana Tortilis Camp was nothing short of incredible. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like family. This was our first visit to Elewana.
Our guide, Dickson, was absolutely outstanding—his knowledge of the animals, climate, environment, diets, and even their anatomy was remarkable. Every morning he’d ask, “What would you like to see today?” and then made it his mission to find it. Thanks to his expertise and determination, we saw most of the animals on our list on the very first day! We were also joined by Jr, an apprentice, who was eager to share his knowledge of the different regions and the animals that inhabit them—he answered all our questions with enthusiasm.
The lodge staff was exceptional—attentive, friendly, and always ready with a big smile. They made it a point to remember our names and genuinely made us feel welcome. The rooms were beautifully decorated, spotless, and so comfortable.
Daniel, our bartender at the lodge, remembered our drinks perfectly and took time to share insights into Maasai culture, which made our evenings even more special. James, our bush bartender, also impressed us by remembering our preferred drinks out in the wild—it’s those thoughtful touches that make a difference. Timothy, our waiter, was quick, attentive, and went above and beyond to accommodate my husband’s gluten-free diet without any issues. My husband couldn’t stop raving about how phenomenal the food was—no small feat when you have dietary restrictions!
This camp exceeded every expectation. My parents return here whenever they visit Kenya because of the quality, service, and warmth of the people—and now I understand why. I highly recommend Elewana Tortilis Camp and look forward to returning myself.
