Amboseli Sopa Lodge was one of the lodges and camps that we stayed in on our 19 day safari through Kenya and Tanzania, booked through Tapestry of Africa. This was our second Sopa lodge stay. It’s a big property with a large variety of accommodation. We stayed in a small standalone bungalow, number 45. It was towards the rear of the property, just below Hemingway’s Bar. The history of the bar, and the property, was explained to us by the wonderful head barman Emmanuel. We stayed here for two nights after crossing back into Kenya from Tanzania. On arrival you are greeted by an absolute giant of a Masai who always had a laugh with us. The staff were all excellent. Always smiling. They genuinely looked like they enjoyed working at the lodge. We arrived as lunch was about to begin. The buffet at Amboseli Sopa was the best we saw at any lodge on our tour. It was huge. An amazing variety. The lodge is large, and the dining room gets very busy. There’s a huge fireplace in the middle that would be very cool to see alight. Our room was really cute. I called it the hobbit hole. It had plenty of room for the two of us and our bags. Readily accessible power points meant it was easy to recharge phones, cameras and netbook. The bathroom was small but functional and you had to give the shower plenty of time to get hot water. Very comfortable queen size bed. I’m sure two men in a bungalow with one bed raised some eyebrows amongst the staff but at no time did we feel uncomfortable. I'll use this opportunity to say that at no time did we as gay travellers ever feel uncomfortable in either Kenya or Tanzania. I think the lodge dates to 1984 and apart from some of the fittings in our bungalow it could have been built yesterday. We didn’t make use of the pool or pool bar but it was a beautiful area. We did use both the main bar and Hemingways. Both excellent. The lodge faces Kilimanjaro and is a 20km drive from the gate into Amboseli. Vervet monkeys are all around the lodge grounds. We loved our two nights at Amboseli Sopa Lodge and recommend the lodge if you are travelling to Amboseli National Park, either on an organised safari, or as an independent traveller. Wonderful smiling staff, great accommodation, great facilities and great food. An unexpected bonus was the historical association to Ernest Hemingway.

Guests are greeted by Sam, a 7 foot tall Maasai elder in full regalia, and then enter the lobby where they are handed a hot towel and mango juice while waiting for their room to be ready. The hotel is tastefully appointed in local African safari style with much use of stucco and wood designs. The lobby leads out to a lovely pond with bridge where a chorus of frogs sings at night. On the left is a bar with huge comfy couches and on the right is the restaurant which serves meals buffet style often with a creative twist on local African or global dishes. Between the bar and restaurant there is a large lawn with views of Kilimanjaro on a clear day. There’s also an elevated platform where you can look out onto the plain. The accommodations consist of a little safari hut with private bathroom, a desk, and a little patio for lounging. Hot water is limited to early morning and evening hours. There is also a swimming pool which is well shaded in the afternoon. There’s also a second bar called Hemingway’s which looks out on the Savannah but I didn’t actually go there. There is also a boutique shop selling sundries, books, and gifts, as well as a Maasai women’s market selling local handicrafts. Some of the other highlights include the vervet monkeys that roam the hotel grounds and the occasional drama that happens between them and the banded mongoose that also live nearby. Additionally, there is a Maasai village nearby which you can visit for a small fee where you can learn about this culture. The only downside is that this lodge is a bit far from Amboseli’s entrance, so it may take a bit more time to start your game drive, but there is also the possibility of seeing animals on the way (I saw giraffes and zebras). Overall, a pleasant place to stay near Amboseli park

We had a mixed experience at the Sopa Lodge. Here's our breakdown: PROs: - Amazing view of Mt. Kilimanjarno! - Ernest Hemingway built a house here, it's now a bar with a great view and history. - The rooms are very nice, the beds comfortable, the mosquito nets good quality. - The aesthetic generally is very nice, the garden areas vibrant and well kept, and the lounge and bar areas very comfortable. - The small Massai market feels authentic. - The pool is refreshing and clean. - The staff is very helpful and friendly. - The all-you-can-eat breakfast buffets are good (but not great). CONs: - The showers ran out of hot water in the evening. - There's no wifi in the rooms, and low network bars. - The Massai women in the market are friendly but very pushy (for bartering, start at 5-10% of the initial offer and be prepared for a tough negotiation). Some people may enjoy this, but we found it a little intense. - Our "guide" for the full day safari spent most of the time on his phone, and while he was good at spotting animals, he seemed bored and didn't offer much information about our itinerary, the park, the animals, or really anything. - It's always awkward when establishments have their staff do performances at mealtimes. - They played mediocre music rather loudly at the pool, but maybe it was a special for Christmas. - Check-out is 10am, but it's not written or communicated anywhere. TLDR - It's more of a family hotel than a luxury resort. Still very recommended!

As previously mentioned, I stayed at Amboseli Sopa Lodge in late March and suffered a severe case of food poisoning after my first dinner at their buffet. I am now writing this update in response to the deeply disappointing and misleading reply from the lodge’s management.||Let me be clear: their claim that I arrived at the lodge already unwell is absolutely false. I was in perfect health upon arrival — something my travel guide, drive and travel companions can personally confirm. I began feeling violently ill at 3 AM, while sleeping in the lodge's room, just hours after dining at their buffet. The cause of the food poisoning — later confirmed to be due to Escherichia coli — is clear and undeniable.||The hotel is now trying to twist the facts by claiming I requested a special diet upon arrival, implying I was already experiencing symptoms. This is not true. I asked for a bland meal on the second day before dinner, only after I had already become sick from the buffet during the first day and could no longer tolerate normal food due to nausea and stomach pain. Their suggestion that this was a proactive act of care is not only misleading but insulting — I was paying for a full buffet, not to be served plain rice and boiled potatoes I couldn’t even eat.||Moreover, the so-called “medical visit” I received was a joke. The doctor looked at me for less than a minute, asked how I felt, handed me a few pills, and left. This did not resolve my condition, and the next day I had to be hospitalized for two days and required nearly a month of further medical treatment after returning home. The physical, emotional, and financial toll of this experience was significant.||||What is most shocking, however, is that instead of apologizing or taking any responsibility, the lodge is now attempting to discredit me publicly, insinuating that I am lying. This is not only deeply unprofessional, but ethically unacceptable.||||Mistakes can happen — but the correct response is to show empathy, offer a sincere apology, and attempt to make things right. Instead, I have received no apology, no compensation, and no follow-up, despite repeated attempts to contact the hotel over the course of two months. Their silence speaks volumes about how they handle customer complaints and serious health incidents.||||To all future travelers: if you value your health and your peace of mind, I strongly advise you to avoid Amboseli Sopa Lodge. A hotel operating in such a remote location, welcoming international guests, must be able to guarantee basic hygiene and food safety. In my case, they failed spectacularly — and then chose to blame the victim.||||This response from the management only confirms my original concerns: lack of responsibility, lack of professionalism, and a complete disregard for...

Let me be clear: their claim that I arrived at the lodge already unwell is absolutely false. I began feeling violently ill at 3 AM, while sleeping in my room, just hours after dining at the lodge’s buffet. Their suggestion that this was a proactive act of care is not only misleading but insulting — I was paying for a full buffet, not to be served plain rice and boiled potatoes I couldn’t even eat.

Moreover, the so-called “medical visit” means a doctor looked at my face for less than a minute, asked how I felt, handed me a few pills, and left. This obviously did not resolve my condition, and the next day I had to be hospitalized for two days and required nearly a month of further medical treatment after returning home. The physical, emotional, and financial toll of this experience was significant.
