Our one-night stay at Loita Hills Basecamp was certainly short, but definitely memorable, as one of the highlights of our 6 day safari. We added this to our itinerary as a way to break up the long drive from Lake Nakuru to the Maasai Mara, as it's pretty much along the way.||The camp is very well run and maintained by a skilled and welcoming staff of locals from the community. Every stay includes an activity each day, with the option to pay a reasonable supplement for more. We thoroughly enjoyed our nature walk into the hills, warrior training sessions, and time around the camp fire.||Our accommodations were simple, but very comfortable and tastefully designed. We were lucky enough to get upgraded to a cottage from a tent and really appreciated the extra perk of an electrical outlet to charge our devices (though charging was safe and easy enough in the common area too). Our bedding was certainly comfortable enough for a one night stay and we absolutely loved the outdoor shower, complete with an ample supply of hot water. The pit toilet was also well designed, kept very clean, and had no smell thanks to natural ventilation.||We loved walking around the beautifully landscaped grounds, living side by side with all the resident animals. And the two-story common space offered a breezy hang out space complete with great views out to the horizon. It was also where we ate our meals. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner was simple, tasty, and made with love.||A stay here is highly...
Read moreFrom the moment we arrived at the campsite of Loita hills we had a very good feeling about this place. We and some other families with children we traveled with, were welcomed on a very nice way by the staff (Maasai people) who take care of us directly. We had a nice evening at the campfire listening to songs of the staff who stayed the night at the campfire to protect us. The next day we could choose a range of activities and my wife and I together with one of our travel companions, choose to go for a nature walk. It was one the main highlights of our holiday in Kenya and Tanzania. We walked about 4 hours through the beautiful landscape. Very relaxed and learned about the way of living here and also saw some wildlife like giraffes during our walk. A martial eagle caught a hare while we were witnessing that. Beautiful. Our guides, Oloserian and two other Maasai members showed us their fantastic natural habitat. It gave us also some time to have a nice talk with them. At the campsite it was very relaxed and the staff was very friendly. We met the majestic Loita, the eland antilope who lives at the site since she was very small. An inspiring memory that will stay with us forever and we hope to get back some day.
Wish you all the luck in the world and hope to meet...
Read moreI would like to thank Manon, Sankale and the staff at Loita Hills Basecamp for a wonderful week!
In short, I went full board and truly became part of the community, experienced an excellent stay with inspiring people in a stunning landscape and - above all - learned a lot (about Maasai culture, nature and life) and made true new friends and WhatsApp buddies.
The facilities (tents, showers and toilets) are comfortable, neat and modern and in the middle of nature. Friendly goats, cows, gazelles, dogs, a common deer and other wildlife walk around the camp and keep you company. A great way to forget about home and reconnect to nature! The staff is very social and always willing to answer questions and make you part of their community and is in for a small talk. Even as a single traveler I was entertained for a week and never felt lonely but inspired.
During the day I mostly did two activities at a relaxing pace. Nature walks, herding animals, wood carving, games and even collecting honey from the bees. The owners and their Maasai staff hang out at the camp fire during evenings which provides for a great opportunity to discuss, laugh and learn from each other. Last but not least, the kitchen staff is friendly and the food is good!
Simply a brilliant stay! Highly...
