From its panoramic perch above Lake Naivasha, the Great Rift Valley Lodge enjoys one of humankind’s oldest views – over the sweeping floor of the world’s largest valley. Kenya's most important watershed...
An hour and a half’s drive or a 30-minute flight from Nairobi (24 kilometres from Naivasha town and 12 off the Nairobi-Nakuru highway), the Lodge is built on the Eburru, a mountain that the Maasai call Ol Donyo Opurru, meaning mountain of smoke. The lodge sits at about 7,000 feet, from which elevation it enjoys magnificent views to the west and east. The vistas stretch from the sparkling waters of Lake Naivasha to the jagged volcanic crater of Mount Longonot and, beyond, the sloping shoulders of the Aberdare Mountains – Kenya’s most important watershed.

Read moreI have to be honest, this resort is going down in quality from its former glory days. We went as a group to the resort. Check in literally took 2 hours from arrival at the desk to when we got taken to the rooms. We were so upset. Many of the rooms are nearly a kilometer away from check in. You can wait over an hour for the hotel van to collect you at reception and take you to the rooms. Unacceptable. Then in my room, I walk in, and right there inside the light fixture is a dead rotting bat. It surely must have been there for at least a week. Did no one notice or check the room? Next, the electricity in the whole area went out. Most hotels and resorts in Kenya have backup generators when electricity fails. But not the Great Rift Valley Lodge. Only the reception had a generator. Parents were complaining that their children's asthma and diabetes medicines were spoiling without cooling. Older guests in our group complained their breathing machines could not work at night with no electricity. One subset of our group organized a van to take them back to Nairobi instead of sitting all night with no electricity. When a second car was about to go back and forgo our whole prepaid trip, the lights finally came back on. After hours, why did electricity finally come back on? We called the power company, KPLC, and reported the power outage ourselves! The power company said that no one from the resort had reported it. We had to give the power company the phone number for Great Rift Valley Lodge so they could pinpoint and fix the power outage. Can you imagine such incompetence that the resort had no backup power supply for guests and had not reported the power outage to officials!?! Reception claimed there is a generator for rooms but they did not have anyone to work it. But asking other resort staff, they said there is no backup generators for rooms. One bright spot, the food is excellent. That has...
Read moreI recently attended a lovely wedding at this resort, and the staff was courteous throughout the event. However, overall, I found the experience to be below expectations, especially given the resort’s high price point.
While the staff were kind and attentive, I believe there is room for improvement in terms of professionalism and service management. For example, the resort charges excessively for basic amenities—Ksh250 for a bottle of water and Ksh100 as a deposit felt unnecessary. The food was quite ordinary for the price charged, and I would expect more from a resort of this caliber.
One evening at the Sagitta restaurant, we ordered a simple cheese pizza and cheese bites, but it took over 1 hour and 15 minutes for the food to arrive, and when it finally did, it was served cold. It’s disappointing to experience such delays and lack of attention to basic expectations, especially at these prices.
Additionally, I found it puzzling that staff repeatedly approached us to clear the table while we were still eating. On multiple occasions, more than three staff members came by, interrupting our meal. There was also an incident where coffee was served, but milk was spilled and left unattended, which is something I would expect to be promptly addressed even at more modest establishments.
Although I see many positive reviews for this resort, my experience was unfortunately not a positive one. This isn’t a complaint out of frustration, but rather an honest reflection from someone who travels frequently. Having lived in the States and traveled across cities, I was disappointed with my stay here and regret choosing this resort in Naivasha. I would not recommend it to others.
Wishing love and...
