Fantastic Safari experience. While this hotel might be slightly further away from others it is absolutely worth it. Set in stunning backdrop of the Maasi Mara we stayed in this stylish tent/lodge hotel for 2 nights. It truly has something for everyone - couples and families. Our family ( 2 adults and two young teenage sons) enjoyed swims in pool looking out at giraffes and zebra. The family/tents lodges are spacious and beds are so comfortable - especially loved our hot water bottles on the cold ish night. The food is utterly delicious- the best we’ve eaten all holiday. The breakfast is choice of fruits, cereals, omelet, bacon, sausages, home made biscuits, fruit smoothies, teas and coffees. We had a lovely hot packed lunch one of the days while out on the safari which was great. For dinner there were at least two choices per course plus a vegetarian option. ||The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly as well as being well supervised. There was evening entertainment on night two with traditional singing and dancing (jumping very high) , our kids joined in and had great fun. You are guided back and forth to your tent at night and in the morning by Maasi warriors with spears and torches which added to the experience and made you feel safe when surrounded by the local neighbours at night! ||The safari itself was breathtaking we were fortunate to see all the big nine many of which we heard at night, plus so much more. We also saw the great migration which is impressive and you feel like you are in the middle of a David Attenborough programme. ||I would highly recommend staying here. It’s a really special place.||Hints - have lots of smaller notes for providing tips as with everywhere in Kenya the tipping system can be a bit confusing. At the end of your trip I would recommend leaving a tip for cleaning staff in the bedroom, leaving something for the waiting staff at the restaurant at your last meal and let them know it’s for sharing, tipping the security/massi warriors who carry your bags and walk with you at night/ morning as you leave plus we left a small tip in the communal tips box. There will also be lots of local women selling jewellery and carvings at the park entry check points - in my opinion it’s worth buying from them rather than at a shop as at least the locals are getting the full money. But be...
Read moreWe had an absolutely wonderful stay at Loyk Mara on our trip to Kenya, this was our last stop on our two week trip that we had planned with Shadows of Africa, and the team at Loyk made us feel so welcome and we had such a fantastic time. The staff were exceptional; we really enjoyed speaking with Wilson (he introduced himself as Lion and nick-named us Mama Lion and Big Lion 😂) we also really enjoyed chatting with ‘Dr’ Lucas at the bar, who had a great sense of humour! ||On our last night we were treated to a Maasai chant/song and dance, and the kitchen staff had prepared a cake for us for our anniversary. We felt truly honoured and grateful for this gift they gave us, it was such a special experience for us and something we will remember always.||The rooms at Loyk were beautifully furnished and super comfortable and clean, and we felt very safe with the security staff around to walk us to and from our tents after dark. And the camp was surrounded by wildlife; we saw lots of monkeys and could hear hippos and hyenas at night which was a really cool experience. ||The food was amazing as well, we especially liked the pork chops we had on our last night there, they were delicious!||We also had a chance to spend some time at the swimming pool, which had a beautiful view which I’m sure affords lots of great opportunities to view wildlife, however we only saw a couple monkeys when we went.||I do hope we have the chance to visit again in the future, they made our trip to the Maasai Mara...
Read moreThe service and food was excellent. The tents are very luxurious and clean, and there are no bugs inside the tents. They have hot running water, great wifi and electricity 24/7. At night they even but a heating bottle in our bed - and it was the most comfortable and luxurious feeling! They did all these extra services that made you feel very at ease and relaxed. The camp lies in the open wilderness with no fences, so you will hear and see animals during day and night. After sundown, the local masai accompany you if you go outside from your tent. The camp has a beautiful pool and very scenic surroundings.
When we arrived after a long drive from Nairobi, we did not want to drive out for a short game drive. The camp offered us a complementary walking safari on the savannah outside the camp. Three Masai's took us around, showing is footprints and animals. That was really amazing, and one of our favorite memories! We saw giraffes, hyenas and many other animals in really close proximity.
The camp is located a bit "further out" from the areas where there are a lot of camps near each other (for example around Talek og Mara Simba), but I would say it is worth the extra hour of driving without a doubt!! We did not know that the camp was a bit far away, and when looking on Google Maps it is located very to by the other camps, but driving just 1 KM takes much longer time than what you would expect (due to the roads etc.). That's good to keep in mind when roaming around...
