Words cannot describe the absolutely incredible experience of Rekero Camp! My friend and I went on safari in Kenya not knowing what to expect, and we were amazed by the staff and overall experience at Rekero. We stayed for three nights and wish we could have stayed many more. ||I can’t say enough good things about the staff—they were really what made everything so incredible. The managers Sam and Timothy were so kind and made sure everything taken care of for us.||Japher was such a great waiter throughout the stay, and Moses was the best housekeeper. We loved getting to know Isaac and Joseph, who made us feel so safe escorting us to and from our tents each morning before sunrise and evening after dark. ||Best of all, our guide Saruni was EXCEPTIONAL. Because of his extraordinary knowledge of the animals and his years of experience guiding, we saw every animal we could have ever wanted to including the ones that are tougher to catch a glimpse of like the leopard and cheetah. He was so kind and funny, and we loved spending every day with him. We were so sad to leave him at the end of the three days—we really became friends over our time together!||A few notes in case they are helpful to others: |—I was worried it would be too hot without air conditioning, but we had no issues at all. There was a large standing fan in the room, and that, in conjunction with the breeze off the river, made it more than comfortable. |—We never had any issues with bugs or mosquitoes at any time at the camp or elsewhere in the Mara. |—My friend and I were a bit cautious going into this trip being two single female travelers, but we never once felt anything other than complete ease once we were at Rekero. |—Asilia (the company that runs Rekero) only hires local Masai guides, and this makes all the difference. The guides have grown up around the animals, and they are so knowledgeable about them. We heard from numerous people that other camps’ guides follow Asilia vehicles around because they know the guides know what they’re doing/where they’re going, and we witnessed this first hand. |—Multiple other groups staying at Rekero had stayed there before and were returning for annual visits. This shows how quality the camp is that people keep returning. |—The food was so delicious. This was something I was nervous about going into the trip, but absolutely loved once I experienced it. Great cuisine options. |—The camp is not fenced, so animals walk through at night (especially the hippos)! This is incredible because you get to hear their calls. We never felt nervous about this because the security staff was so top notch. ||Prior to this trip, I thought going on a safari was a bucket list trip you do once in your life—I couldn’t have been more wrong! This experience showed me that safari is the most relaxing, amazing experience you can ever have. All of that is dependent on the people—the staff at every level of the camp make or break your experience, and the team at Rekero made sure our expectations were exceeded in every possible way. I can’t wait to come back to Kenya, and I plan to stay at Rekero every time I visit in the future! ||If you’re considering a safari to Kenya, STAY AT REKERO! You will not be...

The camp has been recently refurbished, with a nice update to the tents. The location remains a very good one, right on the Talek River with a crossing point (in the right season) right in front of the lounge area. Hippos and crocs were regularly seen down in the river. It’s worth noting that the camp is not far from the nearest airstrip, and during the day there was the very occasional plane passing overhead just before landing. We had tent #1 here, one of the family tents. This consisted of two large bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the other with two twins. Both rooms had a large bathroom connected to it, and the two bedrooms were connected by a comfortable seating area. The only main challenge with the tent was that in the early afternoon the main bedroom got full sunlight, and it got very hot for a few hours. This sun also would shine down on the outdoor sitting area; this area actually didn’t have any chairs or other furniture, perhaps due to the high heat. There was a fan in each bedroom, but during siesta time the tent definitely got warm! I was also a little surprised that the door at the entrance had a gap of a couple of centimeters on the bottom, which meant we had a fairly regular stream of small ants looking for crumbs from our wakeup tray. The food was high quality and always appreciated, we stayed here during Valentine’s Day and there was not only special chocolates (and roses) in the morning but romantic dinner in the evening. The camp has a satellite balcony sitting area that is used for private lunches, but we also sat there a couple of times in the shade to get out of our hot tent. It was really appreciated, and somewhere worth spending time to watch the savannah life pass by. Overall, a really nice camp in a great location to explore...

I’ve been on several safaris throughout Africa and this camp in Kenya’s Masai Mara did not disappoint, in fact it exceeded all expectations. The camp is situated along a river where you can watch hippos, giraffe, tupi, and more as you enjoy your morning tea or a sundowner. If you’re lucky you’ll even catch wildebeest making their annual crossing right here by camp. The vibe of the camp is casual comfort. The tents are well appointed and our’s overlooked the river and a group of hippos living below. Every night the camp gathers for a communal dinner along one large dining table and the camp management join you for the meal. It was awesome to share stories of our travels and the days adventures over these shared meals. The camp management also went out of their way to create special moments. Whether it was a secluded romantic dinner for my wife and I one evening or setting up our sundowners on the river bank, the sought to make every day memorable. Our guide, Senchura, was phenomenal. He was extremely knowledgeable about the animals and landscape and had a way of connecting the dots between species, the ecosystems, and climate change that I had never experienced from a guide before. The Mara is excellent for all kinds of animal watching and since the camp is situated in the Central Mara you are always close to some action. In fact you don’t even need to leave camp to get close to the animals as they freely roam through the camp, day and night. If you want to get up close to the animals and have a truly classic safari experience I could not recommend Rekero enough.

My wife and I spent 3 nights at Rekero Camp in Jul 2018 and thoroughly enjoyed our experience there. It's hard to imagine a more scenic location - the camp is located on a ledge about 30 feet over a river, complete with the ubiquitous hippo and crocodiles, and giraffes foraging on the horizon. But the best part, by far, was the incredible staff. Everyone was so eager to please, pleasant and cheerful. The food was outstanding, and they happily accommodated my wife's vegetarian preference. More importantly, our guide, Naballah, was a veritable encyclopedia on the birds and beasts of the bush. Game viewing was excellent, and we saw all of the Big 5 with the exception of a rhino. Heck, they even have wi-fi. The Rekero is not cheap but it's worth it. Plus, the group that owns Asilia, goes out of their way to support the local community. Recommended without hesitation.
