Mela — Hotel in Shella ward

Before arriving at the property, I was contacted directly by the owner asking for some kind of payment before arriving (in more than 20 years of travelling this was a first for me). I replied that I would be happy to give him a deposit, and he told me that I could do that on the day. When we arrived, the staff promptly asked us for the promised deposit, stating we could pay in full up front (we did not and settled the bill the day we left). When we asked if we could have lunch, the staff appeared very impositioned, and when they said it would take an hour and half to grill two chicken breasts and steam some vegetables, that is exactly what happened. We were not given any orientation to the property or how anything worked. When we returned that evening after some sightseeing, we were hoping to have dinner at the property. However, the staff had all left, and other guests had to tell us that dinner has to be requested earlier in the day or the staff goes home. Thus, we had to go back out and find a place to eat. Stayed here over Christmas and it was great. Returned here in March to celebrate my birthday - had booked for 4 nights but was bizarrely asked to leave after only 1 night. Received a text message saying that a guest was refusing to leave so we needed to vacate our room. Which obviously made no sense. Only reason we could think was that we had asked that the pool be cleaned - it was green and murky, you couldn't see the bottom. They did refund all our money but we spent the first of our 3 full days in Malindi trying to find alternative accommodation! The owner appears to have gone back to Italy so maybe the place has gone downhill which is a real shame as...

I have stayed here for one week and I must say everything was just perfect. The house is beautifully furnished and there is a lovely garden with a swimming pool. The closest beach is only five mintes walk. Everyone was extremely kind and helpful, I was well looked after throughout my stay. It felt like home. The breakfast and evening meal was delicious and the portions were generous. The owner Mr. Gianni surprised me with a complimentary dinner at the end of my stay which was a very kind gesture and I'd like to thank him for that and also thank for everyone to make my stay enjoyable.
