It is located in the middle of the Masai Mara National Park. it is about six hours away from Nairobi by car. Check in was very easy, you get a welcome drink while they sort out the paper work. They have a large number of tented lodges or cabins. The cabins look exactly like the ones you see in the pictures. No air conditioning but they have a fan that you can turn on. You won't really need it because at night time, it gets very cold so ask for an extra blanket! During the day, you have a great view of the natural outdoors with a river running along the valley. There are hippopotamuses, various birds, and baby antelopes that roam around in the middle of the day.
Their facilities are great. They have an outdoor pool which is great in between your game drives. Restaurants and bars have a nice variety of international foods and dishes (Indian, salads, a carving station which was my favourite...they had roast beef or roast pork, pasta station and a stir fry station, and finally, small tables of desserts like cakes and fruits.
Note that our package included all meals BUT it did not include beverages except for coffee/tea. Anything else outside of that, you'll have to pay for it. Beers or a glass of wine costs about $4 USD. A bottle of wine costs around $22 USD. Prices are average and we were okay with it.
The staff are very friendly, helpful and they always greet you in between the different meal times or whenever they see you in the lobby. Amos was our server at the restaurant and he did a fabulous job. Job was our housekeeper and he did a very good job as well. They do a turn down service where they close all your blinds so the bugs won't get in and prep your bed while you're at dinner so when you're back in your room, you can pretty much just pass out..
The rooms and their larges are quite big they have two layers of title materials surrounding or make up the tent and around your bedframe there is also another layer of mosquito nets. This is to prevent any mosquitoes that kept actually come into your room. The electricity was shut off during some hours of the day (i.e. the middle the night or between 4 to 6 PM). The staff there will tell you about the usage electricity as well as hot water. Water is also only available during 5 to 9 PM and in the morning between 6 and 10 PM. This is fine as we are out on a safari game drive during the hours that we don’t have hot water or electricity.
They also have a spa where you can get massages and a gift shop for souvenirs.
We really enjoyed our four days three nights here at Ashnil Mara camp. They are not a five-star luxury but they are definitely not a run down budget accommodation either. You’ll find everything you need and more here at this camp. And because it is in the middle of the park, it is very easy to go on the Safari game drives while you stay here. They have presentations every night at 7pm hosted by a local Masai native where he talks about the culture, history, ceremonies, and the animals. It's a different topic every night so be sure to check it out while you enjoy your drink from the bar.
The check out process was interesting...be sure to double check your bar tab when you check out! I calculated it myself as I like to Lee track of all my travel expenses and noticed they added an extra 1000 KS to the total bill! I'm not sure if it's an honest mistake or if they intentionally added that. They corrected it afterwards but be careful! Hence, I have to drop a star of this review...Other than this small incident, everything else was great.
If you are looking for an above average accommodation on your African Safari expedition, this place is great! Be sure to ask about this place when you book it with your...
Read moreWe are currently staying at Ashnil Mara Camp (16th–18th September 2025), and while the property’s location along the river and its initial vibe during arrival were truly promising, the reality of the stay has been extremely disappointing. The only saving grace — and the reason for 2 stars instead of 1 — is the stunning setting and the quality of food. Beyond that, the service and attitude of the team here are the worst we have experienced across Kenya.||||To begin with, the reception and restaurant staff lack even the most basic warmth and hospitality expected of a “luxury” camp. They follow an absurd system of assigning the same dining table to guests for all meals — we were allocated one of the worst locations, and despite polite requests, were not accommodated with a fair rotation like river-side for one meal and inside for the next. Such rigidity and indifference immediately dampen the experience.||||For a property charging premium rates and branding itself as luxury, the facilities are shockingly inadequate. Guests are provided only 500ml of drinking water per person per day, and any additional water has to be purchased — something that felt outright inhuman given the climate and setting. The tents have no slippers, no hair conditioner, no dental or sewing kits — all of which we later discovered are available at their shop to sell rather than provide. There are no telephones in the rooms, leaving guests stranded in case of emergencies or even basic service requests.||||Our tent (No. 20) came with yet another frustration — the Wi-Fi does not work here at all. When raised, the staff brushed it off with a cold apology and informed us that “nothing can be done,” despite Wi-Fi working perfectly at the reception and other rooms. Only after insisting, we were casually told they might shift us tomorrow — which shows how little they value guest comfort.||||To make matters worse, the tents have no proper fans or ventilation arrangements to handle the extreme daytime heat, making them unbearably hot and uncomfortable. For a safari camp that charges such exorbitant rates, this lack of foresight and basic comfort is shocking.||||Overall, while Ashnil Mara Camp enjoys a superb location and serves good food, everything else — from facilities to staff attitude — falls drastically short of even average expectations, let alone luxury standards. Sadly, this has been the worst hospitality experience we’ve had in Kenya, and I would not recommend it to anyone seeking genuine comfort, service, and...
