We had a fabulous stay at the Keekorok lodge in August, on arrival at the airstrip we were greeted by John and taken to the lodge. We were informed that John would not be our driver for the rest of our stay however, when we bumped into him, he was warm and welcoming. After being checked in we were taken to our room. It was lovely and had everything we needed including bottled water, which was topped up daily.
Outside the windows were spectacular views of the monkeys playing and on our first day we were lucky enough to spot a herd of wildebeest from our window. We spoke with Alex who was very informative and lovely. He helped us to get a little closer to the wildebeest and ensured he passed on his knowledge of these animals to us.
Lunches and dinners at the lodge were lovely with a wide variety, sometimes the self-serve area felt a little busy with people but overall, this was not a problem. Breakfast was great, with a wide variety of food. The staff at the restaurant were very welcoming and always asked about our day! We enjoyed watching the Maasai tribe at dinner. The hippo pool was also brilliant (but a bit smelly), and you get a nice view of the hippos while having a drink at the bar.
The safari drives we were taken on were spectacular and Emmanuel the driver ensured we saw 4 of the big 5, including a leopard! We also saw lions, giraffes and a herd of 17 elephants just a few minutes down the road from the lodge. He was fantastic at his job and we would definitely recommend a safari with Emmanuel. We really enjoyed our stay at Keekorok and wish we had stayed for longer!
Please pass on our thanks to all the staff in the restaurant during our visit (15th-18th August 2024), please also give a special thanks to Alex for his kindness on our first day and throughout our stay. We would also like to thank John and Emmanuel and finally all other staff at Keekorok lodge for ensuring we had the best time...
Read moreFirst time in Masai Mara and for a wild life lover it was an overwhelming experience during our stay.
First of all you are staying right in the middle of a jungle in the national park. There is no fencing or boundary walls to protect you except doors of ur family villa. I mean that's the adventure and thrill we thrive for. A nice warning written at reception for not walking around alone after it is dark till 6 am in morning welcomes you.
Coming to rooms we stayed in family villa which had two big rooms with two bathrooms and glass door backyard with view to jungle. Room service was very good. Before you come back from safari your beds are ready with mosquito nets spread and set. Rooms were large enough for comfortable stay. Had enough plug points for charging ur cameras. From room itself you can watch hippos grazing in the garden. Lot of birds in morning will fill ur start of safari.
Good Indian food is always there whether it is breakfast or lunch or dinner. Evening snacks and packed breakfast during full day safari were also very tasty. A well managed bar called Hippo Bar which gives view of a pond full of hippos while you have ur favourite drinks. While having dinner u will get to see masai dance and light live music too. Live counters for Chinese and Italian food and full size spread of salad and dessert options were lipsmaking. We had chance to taste local fruits as well. You will see birds joining ur meals too. Carry water from room if u don't want to buy water while having meals.
Property has a big garden, swimming pool, indoor play area, elephant view point, hippo bar and many birds to click. Hippo, monkeys, mongoose are in house and if lucky you may get to see many more.
Safaris start from the lodge itself and they have a big store to buy curious and gifts. Masai or African infra was giving the local authentic feeling.
Overall very good experience and definitely would...
Read moreWe recently booked a 3-night stay at Muthu Keekorok Lodge, a place our friends have had fond memories from past visits. Unfortunately, this stay was disappointing.
Our experience got off to a bad start when our first night was cancelled, supposedly due to a hot water issue. We later discovered it was likely due to an overbooking. Very disappointing and poorly handled.
During our stay, hot water was only available at limited times of the day, which was extremely inconvenient. Worse still, power kept failing, and we had to shower, dress and dine in the dark.
On the 2nd day Wi-Fi and mobile phone service was intermittent at best, with periods where there was no communication possible at all. In a remote area like the Maasai Mara, we understand some connectivity challenges, but the complete lack of a reliable communication service made things unnecessarily difficult.
For a hotel that markets itself as five-star, this lack of basic amenities is simply unacceptable.
The buffet was decent, but many of the dishes were repeated the next day, which was disappointing and not what we expected.
Our friends have visited the Maasai Mara many times and have stayed in various lodges, including this one previously, but this experience was disappointing. That said, there were some positives: Kennedy, our waiter, provided an excellent service, the packed safari breakfast was thoughtfully prepared and much appreciated, the surroundings were amazing with hippos visiting us at night and the airstrip is 15 mins away with flight to Nairobi Wilson airport in 35 mins.
Overall, we hope management addresses these ongoing issues and brings the lodge back up to the standard guests rightfully expect. Until then, we sadly cannot recommend...
