Galdessa Camp — Hotel in Taita–Taveta

Galdessa Camp|Our second stop in the ‘bush’ on our wonderful Orphan Trail Safaris trip by Beverly Perry was so serene we wanted to stay! Galdessa Camp, another Sheldrick Wildlife Trust property, is set on the Galana river with accommodation for just ten guests in the most luxurious tented accommodations just feet from the water.|Safaris can be pretty grueling with early departures and travel for several hours on rough, dusty roads. Arriving at Galdessa the staff was lined up expecting us and we were handed hand towels that hand been dipped in ice-water for face/hands and a refreshing drink. Yes…they had me at hello! The main area with a huge living expanse was decorated with furnishings like safaris from times past and was fronted by several decks with chairs poised for coffee in the morning and rests in the afternoon…most inviting.|Our accommodations though close to others, were very private and offered a huge deck in front with chaise lounges that encouraged a stop to view elephants running across the river, hippos ‘hippoing’ about, crocodiles idling in the river and some cape water buffalo beyond. Again, surrealistic. The pool was a beautiful respite from the afternoon heat. I got the feeling of being in a snow globe in this exotic locale. |I cannot give enough kudos or praise to the Galdessa staff. Each and every one made us feel so welcome…Bernard, the manager was always there to say goodbye and bid us good times as we ventured forth every day and was there upon return to say welcome home. Big Mike the chef would appear during our meals he had prepared to be sure all was good…and they were. I think it was Peter who served us coffee, drinks and every meal…such hospitality! Even the dishwasher was friendly. I must credit Bernard because his demeanor was so kind and giving, I think it lent itself to the whole staff who were just beyond terrific. Galdessa Camp has to be one of my favorite places to stay in the world. Its simply stunning location on the banks of the Galana River while being surrounded by the wildlife wandering along in front of you is something you will never forget. |Everything about this camp is special. The main lodge area is beautifully designed. Driftwood beams and palm leaves blend into the landscape of Tsavo and the attention to detail from Angela and her SWT design team make this camp one of the best in Africa. |It has a very coastal feel about it. Doum palms sway with the gentle breezes that come down from the nearby Yatta Plateau. You can just simply sit and watch the wildlife come down to drink and cool off in the river, or maybe get a chance to see Eddie the resident wild Bull Elephant eating doum Palm fruit in front of you. You are over whelmed by the beauty of Tsavo and its wildlife. |Bernard and his amazing team will take care of you and make your stay a memorable one. Delicious food, friendly service and beautiful surroundings, while staying in one of the last really wild places left in the world make Galdessa a very special place to stay.|I travelled with Beverly Perry and Orphan Trail Safaris who organized everything while staying at all the SWT camps. Galdessa Main Camp is an eco-friendly property perched on the edge of the palm-fringed Galana River escarpment– perfect for wildlife viewing, including hippos and crocs. ||The private tented suites offer a charming blend of under canvas ambiance and safari luxury. They are stylishly designed and engineered with natural resources from the local area. ||Although its location is secluded, it allowed us the opportunity to visit the Voi SWT orphans.||Our days were filled with diverse wildlife viewing (giraffes, zebras, ostriches, gerenuks, hippos and wild elephants) as we travelled to/from the watering hole to visit the elies. In addition to sneaking trunk cuddles with Lemeki and Thamana, we were blessed by the sighting of a wild herd of elephants (with a one week-old baby). Pure bliss!||Upon returning from our afternoon excursions, we were greeted by the staff with smiles and a chilled mint scented moist towel to wash off the brick-red hue left by elephant kisses. Our magical afternoon was complete with a refreshing beverage and dip in the infinity pool overlooking the Galana River. No detail has gone unchecked!||The staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The meals did not disappoint – they were delicious and catered to each of our needs. Even a genet cat attempted to dine on our pasta one evening.||Galdessa Main Camp/Voi orphans were the perfect way to end our magical trip to Kenya.
