When I addressed the manager that I think money got stolen from my room (I counted the money a day before and someone had access to my room at lunchtime to bring me towels, when my bag with the money inside was laying on the table) and asked for a solution (in a kind way) like a partial refund of my stay or something, he got verbally and physically aggressive. He said he doesn’t believe me and that I was lying. But in the other sentence he said it was my own fault that my money got stolen because I left my money in my (locked!) room in his lodge. He repeatedly said “it was your own stupidity” and didn’t stop telling me how stupid I was. I then asked him if he’s fine when I record his words to prove how disrespectful he’s treating me to my safari organization later on, he agreed and repeated his words “your own stupidity to leave your money in your room” but then he probably realized that his words are on record now and aggressively grabbed my phone. It almost fell and could have broke. When I told him that I’m gonna write a review to warn people to come to this place he said he doesn’t care because he’s gonna respond to my review. The friends that I made on my safari (I normally had a private room) were so afraid that he could come to my room at night to try to stop me from writing the review in a harassing way, that they let me sleep in their room. ||Of course the guy that went to my room said he didn’t take the money and I couldn’t prove the theft because I didn’t film him taking the money or something, so it’s word against word. I can understand that the lodge can’t do anything until it’s proven. But a lodge manager has to show some respect for their customers. If he said he’s sorry but he can’t do anything and has to decline my solutions that I asked for, it would have been okay in the end. But the way I got treated there was just pure disrespect.||To sum it up, I would highly recommend to avoid this lodge if you want to be safe and rather book a different one as there are...
Read moreThe Lion Hill Lodge is a nice lodge to stay just outside the Voi Gate of Tsavo East National Park.
The rooms are small cabins with terraces, some of which are enclosed by the lodge, some of which provide an awesome view over the National Park. The rooms are good, the beds are a bit slim and you only get two 0,5L bottles of water a day. The Bathroom is okay, but you don’t get liquid hand and bath soap and no shampoo, only a small piece of a body soap bar. There is no constant warm water in the shower, only either really hot or cold water.
The area of the camp is beautiful, the main areas all border the fence of the National Park and because of the location on a hill you have great views. The seating area to eat is nice and big. The walking paths are nicely made and there are always beautiful birds, lizards and bugs sitting on or around the paths. A downside is that there is no Wifi in the rooms, only in the main building. The Staff is really nice and helpful.
Wheelchair accessibility is okay but not leveled. There are ramps on the main path, but to get to the restaurant/reception building you have to go up one step. There is a room with an especially accessible bathroom, which is spacier than the other rooms, but it has one small step at the front door and the floor of the shower area is a layer lower than the rest of the bathroom.
The Restaurant serves all three meals as buffets. The selection and variety are sadly very small, don’t expect much! For Breakfast the chef cooks fresh omelettes, scrambled and fried eggs, which is great. There is Coffee, Hot Water, Tea Bags and Hot Milk available at all times of the day and for breakfast there is some juice. Otherwise the drinks are prized but except for one bottle of water a day not inclusive. Now after two nights staying here I unfortunately have to say that the food also was not good for our stomaches :(
It was a fine stay with a nice room, the sad food and missing Wifi were pretty...

The location and setting of Lion Hill Lodge hold real potential. The view over Tsavo East National Park is breathtaking, and the pool is undoubtedly the highlight – large, well-maintained, and beautifully situated. The local staff do their best and are friendly and service-oriented. Special mention goes to Nick at the reception, who is exceptionally helpful and professional.
Unfortunately, that’s where the positives largely end.
The overall management of the lodge leaves much to be desired. While guests are charged relatively high prices, what’s delivered in return is disappointing. There’s a clear lack of understanding of proper hotel management. The value for money is simply not there.
The food selection is minimal and presented without care. What makes matters worse is the atmosphere in the dining area – the Indian management team sits there watching over the staff constantly, creating an uncomfortable and tense environment for both employees and guests. It’s hard to enjoy a meal under such conditions.
The state of the rooms is another major letdown. They are in urgent need of renovation – with outdated furniture, partly broken fixtures, and only the most basic amenities, hardly matching a 1-star standard. We even found bedsheets that were dirty and had holes – something that clearly points to deeper issues than staff alone can solve.
Adding to the poor impression: construction debris and trash lie around the property, giving a neglected and unprofessional appearance.
Conclusion: Lion Hill Lodge has great potential, thanks to its location, pool, and committed local staff. However, the overall experience is compromised by poor management, neglected facilities, and a lack of value. A place like this – and its hardworking employees – would deserve much...
