I wasn't sure what to expect at this hotel but it fell way below anything I've ever stayed at before. Wasn't sure if what looked like an abandoned warehouse is actually where we were going to say but it was. Based on their website the rooms in the Luiize building must be better than those in the Hercogs as those make a Motel 6 look like a luxury brand. There is no air conditioning and no screens on the windows so good luck staying cool in the summer. And on the weekends the disco is a hopping place so you get to hear all the noise coming from that as the patrons leave the bar. I wasn't sure if I should wear my socks to bed or not but took a chance and didn't and thankfully didn't get bitten up during the night. The WiFi didn't work and neither did the TV. Nice view from the room though and the only thing keeping this from getting a Terrible rating was the food which was actually very good though it took a while to make it to our table. Can't blame the cook though because he was also the server, front desk clerk, and bartender. No other options in this town though and the closest city, Daugavpils, is over 90 minutes away though it may be worth it. If you have time, visit the Viola Stils factory. Their clothes...
Read moreThe good:||||We were on the special occasion and took 3 different rooms this time. I've been before in the Suite and I must say it didn't get any better since two years back - wearing down, with bathroom being especially dirty. All things technically worked though. The another room (#1) despite weird entry straight from the outdoor parking was actually best equipped and bathroom (in contrast with the Suite) was truly nice. The 3rd room (#4) was very usual and seemed way more simple/cheaper by category while actually we paid same price for each on the room. BUT! The most highlight this time and reason for higher rating is that the heating was perfectly working (and powerfully) in all the rooms. In Latvia, at the border of seasons, this is always a trouble and the day before, a number 1 hotel in Riga by Tripadvisor had no heating in rooms at all.. Sooo.. Kudos here for providing one.||||The bad:||||This hotel knew a much better times. These days it is really wearing down, cries for interior renovation or at least a massive cleanup and fixing some of the very basic things (doors, wi-fi, bathroom equipment, etc). Never the less, it is still a better place to stay than others...
Read moreThis was the most disappointing hotel of our week-long stay in Lithuania and Latvia. Arriving at 9 pm on a weekday after a horrendous two-hour drive on a dirt road from Rundale Palace, we were greeted by what appeared to be a tired barmaid, at the bar -- which is also the reception desk. In a demand reminiscent of Soviet days, she asked for the passports or licenses of all six of us, although we had three rooms, and I was paying for all three. The kitchen was closed, and there was no place to eat within walking distance on a rainy night. We all were taken outside, down the street, and entered a building another reviewer suggested was once "grand," but looks like an old two-story warehouse. Only one room of three was as advertised (but all cost the same): junior suite, with Wi-Fi. The other two rooms were barely doubles, with no Internet service. Televisions either didn't work, or showed a couple of Russian-language channels. We all slept OK, and breakfast was pretty good. It is near the few sights in town: the Russian Orthodox Monastery, and the town square with a...
