ANJUNG HOTEL ||||Initially, I went to Northeastern Malaysia to catch the Jungle Train from its terminus in the Kelantan state and all the way to Singapore, but to my dismay, the train ran only through the night. Even the latest internet info wasn’t correct. In that case, I would have missed the scenery of the tropical rain forest especially when the railway route traverses the Titiwangsa mountain range that stretches as a spine through the Peninsular Malaysia. This is probably the only rain forest left in Malaysia that has not been gobbled up by the massive oil palm plantations in the plains.|| ||So, the problem was to head south again and travel as far as I could by taking multiple local buses. This would cover a significant part of the journey and I would therefore be closer to getting to Singapore, my destination.||||As the night fell, I ended up in a small town, Muadzam Shah where the main hotel was too expensive so I looked at the alternative and ended up here. ||||For the services that it provides, this hotel is very pricey. They should be charging one third the price or even one fourth. I had a very nice hotel in Kuala Lumpur for almost similar prices. ||||It is a basic hotel and should hardly be given one star or even less. The staff was friendly. The room was rather run down but okay with a lot of patchwork done to the walls and interior. There was a dirty rug on the floor and the plumbing in the bathroom was basic and under renovation. All the corners and cracks had been closed by some putty and there was a big hole in the wall of the bathroom. ||||The overall experience was rather unpleasant. There is a supermarket in the same strip mall where the hotel is located. You can buy most necessities there. There are several ‘homestays” in this area and before coming to this place, I would recommend calling those first. I ended up here because I was tired and I needed to get to Singapore in hurry. The internet was good but please bring your own electrical travel plug because most outlets in the hotel will only work with Malaysian version. ||||Considering the shape of the hotel, I didn’t dare eat in their café and relied on the stuff that I bought from the market. I would suggest stocking up on some snacks from the market and skip the dinner. The town is far and taxis are hard to come by. ||||Next morning, I did take a taxi to the bus stand. It was a beat up old car and it cost me 10 RM to get to the bus station. Make sure you get to the bus station early because there aren’t too many buses going anywhere. It is a small town and I didn’t see much activity as I saw at other places. You may also have to change buses when you get to Segamat or Gemas for onward journey to Johor Bahru or Singapore. || ||A word about the town: Muadzam Shah is a relatively newer town and was established as a planned municipality in 1979 and is famous for its educational institutions. No wonder I met several students on the bus when I was heading there. It is also famous for its homestay program and nearby aboriginal villages where the early Orange Asli people still live with their own culture, religion and languages. I did not have the time to visit any of those, but a visit there is highly...

Read moreI have stayed at deluxe standard room which cost me rm80. Overall was it was a nice and comfy room. They only provide a soap, a towel and a blanket, air cond and TV. As someone already say the blanket is thin, yes it is definitely thin, but we can control the temperature of aircond. So no basic tooth brush, no mineral water, and no breakfast. They provide wifi but no internet connectivity, whats the point? With all of the lack of things provided the price seems to be overpriced for budget hotel as I've stayed in a better hotels for rm50. But if you just want to sleep and price is not an issue, this...
