Having spent two weeks at Kihaa island resort in the Maldives, I wanted to provide a comprehensive review of the island, share my own personal insights and attempt to dispel some myths about the resort.||||To preface the review, my partner and I spent two weeks on the island. We opted for the “Full Board” package, which includes 3 meals per day, but no drinks (neither of us drink alcohol). It’s my second time visiting the Maldives and my first at Kihaa. We booked this trip with the mindset of spending two weeks relaxing in a tropical haven, away from our corporate jobs and mindful of Kihaa’s proximity to Hanifaru Bay, its reputable diving centre and ‘jungle island’ vibes, given the unusually high amount of foliage on the island. Its also important to note that we opted for early July to maximise the possibility of seeing the more interesting marine life (manta rays, whale sharks etc.) - spoilers we were not disappointed.||||Wildlife Opportunities:||||The key reason we chose Kihaa. Safe to say, if you are hoping to find for an impressive array of wildlife spotting opportunities, this island is a very good bet. ||||Starting with the island itself, it is tropical. There are a lot of palm and fruit trees with many large fruit bats that soar between them throughout the day and especially at dusk. However, there are also a lot of mosquitos on the island. If you bring good bug spray and apply liberally, they will not be a problem whatsoever, but if you bring no bug spray, you may have a tough time sleeping because you will get bitten a lot - we saw this with other holidayers who were less prepared. The island staff do a great job cleaning the rooms every day, but I strongly urge you to bring your own bug spray and lots of it.||||Moving onto the house reef (that strangely receives negative reviews from others) - lets put that myth to bed right now, because whilst snorkelling on the house reef, 15 metres from shore, we saw black tip reef sharks, nurse sharks, moray eels and eagle rays on a daily basis. That’s not to mention the abundance of fish and that we encountered, stingrays and even a lone manta ray, alongside various Green and Hawksbill turtles. You will be very hard pressed to find a more diverse and accessible house reef to snorkel on every day in the Maldives.||||Next, Hanifaru Bay. We arrived in the middle of ‘manta ray season’ and were not disappointed. Trips to Hanifaru are ad hoc and dependent upon when the Rangers are in the Bay, but during our stay there were 4-5 opportunities to venture into the Bay and we were fortunate enough to snorkel with upwards of 30 manta rays (although the guides we were with said that at some points during the year, you may be lucky enough to see hundreds in a single afternoon!). Regardless of how many mantas there are when you visit, it’s an incredible experience and for the avid marine wildlife lover, you won’t be disappointed. In addition, on our first day, we also had the opportunity to snorkel with a Whale Shark (pictures attached) - this isn’t a frequent occurrence in Baa Atoll, but during our two week stay, there were 2-3 sightings, so if you time your trip right, you may get lucky!||||Wrapping up the wildlife section with the scuba diving opportunities. My partner and I completed 11 dives throughout our trip and they were broadly excellent. The dive centre (Ocean Dimensions Kihaa) is staffed with superb and knowledgeable dive masters who know the area very well. We saw manta rays, eagle rays, sting rays, dozens of turtles (green and hawksbill), reef sharks, octopus - the list could go on and on. Superb diving opportunities, twice a day if you feel like it - strongly recommend getting out on the boat and if you haven’t got your PADI certifications yet, you can pick them up during your time at Kihaa. It’s also worth noting that en route to the dive sites, we ran into pods of dolphins multiple times which added a nice touch to the experience.||||However, if Scuba Diving isn’t for you, don’t worry, the Ocean Dimensions team run regular snorkelling trips and excursions, such as to “Turtle Reef” where we saw 12 turtles in 45 minutes of snorkelling. Alternatively, night fishing can be a brilliant way to spend an evening - we loved it so much we went twice and even saw a manta ray feeding at the surface on the second occasion. This is a great trip, because whatever fish you (or the boat crew!) can catch, you take home for dinner the next night.||||In summary, if wildlife is what you’re looking for - Kihaa is a truly wonderful place to visit and you are going to be in for a treat.||||The Resort:||||As mentioned, we selected the “Full Board” option, which meant we were entitled to 3 meals a day from the main restaurant. Being candid, if you are looking for fine dining and 5* cuisine, you won’t get it at Kihaa. That’s not to say the food is bad, to be clear, its quite good, but it won’t be winning any culinary awards. I say this to set appropriate expectations. The breakfast buffet is a large and diverse affair, with freshly made omelettes, eggs, waffles, pancakes all available, alongside cereal, toast, fresh fruit, yoghurt and various pastries. For lunch and dinner, expect 6-8 main dishes, there’s always a fresh soup, a pasta dish, a noodle dish, fish, beef and chicken dishes and various vegetables and salads, with desserts to finish. After 2 weeks, you may find yourself craving something a little different, but it’s all served in different marinades and styles, so don’t be put off - just be realistic about what is on offer.||||Another myth I’ve seen online is that the rooms are dirty / not cleaned / poorly maintained. Again, lets dispel this quickly. The rooms are cleaned and towels are replaced every single day, without fail. If you would like additional cleaning (bug spray for instance) then they can be provided upon request. However, again, do not expect 5* quality rooms, there will likely be some wear and tear on display. Does that mean the rooms are deficient, bad of filthy? Absolutely not in my experience, they may show scuff marks on the floorboards or water marks in the showers, but they are not unclean. Wi-Fi is consistently available and strong, and the air conditioning is very powerful.||||Other amenities in the resort include two large public pools (some rooms also have their own), a couple of bars, and a spa offering a large array of treatments, which was open the entire time we were there, despite it being off season. You also have access to jet skis should you wish to use them beyond the reef, we didn’t, but it looked like fun - just be careful of snorkelers!||||On pricing, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. Kihaa is nowhere near the most expensive resort in the Maldives to stay at and you should be mindful of that when you arrive. Nevertheless, other guests told us that alcohol was very expensive, and the excursions and diving aren’t cheap either - be aware of this and budget accordingly to avoid nasty surprises.||||The resort itself is kept in relatively decent condition - I witnessed no ‘derelict’ buildings, but everything was quite shabby and looked like it could use a lick of paint and some refurbishing. That being said, we were holidaying in the off season when the resort was a lot quieter (10-30 other guests total) and therefore, a reduced number of staff were present. ||||One final point on the resort staff - they were utterly incredible. Ibrahim, Bashir, Mounir and Shaheen were very attentive and a joy to be around and talk to during our stay . They handled every request of ours with dignity and kindness, I was blown away by the service quality. ||||Ethics & Resort Management Transparency||||During our stay, I became aware of comments online articulating problems with the resort management (which took over ~2017) - unfortunately, on this I am unable to concretely provide more information. I tried to learn as much as possible about the issue by directly asking the hotel / restaurant staff, to see whether any of the claims that I’d read online regarding staff being deprived their pay, or even having their Visas/passports withheld, were founded in truth. I can only relay what I was told and experienced, which is that the staff seemed genuinely surprised and informed me these claims weren’t true, to the contrary, many seemed genuinely happy with their current employment status and we did identify a number of employees going to and from the local islands during our stay. I pushed some employees relatively hard to see whether this was part of a wider facade, but could discern no further information. I know that exploitation of vulnerable workers (especially those dependent upon working VISAs) is one of the single biggest problems with luxury tourism and it is hard to identify truly exploitative practices, so if you are unsure about whether you will be contributing to a wider problem, I urge you to investigate the ethics of the resort prior to booking your trip by reaching out to them directly for evidence of ethical management.||||Summary:||||To bring this review to a close, I would suggest highlighting the following key points. ||||1) This island is a gold mine for wildlife lovers who are looking to get away, relax and unwind for a fee that won’t break the bank. Buy yourself a GoPro (all our photos are taken on the GoPro 13 Hero Black) and have a brilliant time capturing memories.||||2) The resort itself is a bit shabby and could use some love, but it is not ‘derelict’ or ‘falling down’. Nevertheless, it’s not the same 5* luxury that you may find at other resorts, be mindful of this and set those expectations accordingly.||||3) Finally, bring bug spray, I think this could genuinely make or break your holiday, so buy more than you need and avoid getting bitten to make the most of...

Kihaa ressort is supposed to be a 5 stars ressort. We have paid the price of a 5 stars ressort (over 1500 dollars per night !)

We have experienced only frustration and disappointment:

  1. the return transfer to Male. We asked several times to have the schedule of our return transfer. Everytime we have been told to came back later... finally the night before our departure (at about 10 PM!) we have been given a paper with the wrong flight time of our international flight (our flight was at 1:15 PM and in the document it was written 3:15 PM). We complained about the that, and asked an earlier transfer as we were supposed to arrive in male 1 hour and a half before our flight to Europe. This is not enough for an international flight. More particularly during covid-19 time, as procedures and controls are increased. Nobody toke into account our request. The day of the departure we were supposed to leave at 11:40. But the internal flight was... delayed! We left at 12:00 and we landed in male at 12:45. This is 30 minutes before our international flight departure. we went through the security, passport controls... and we finally had our flight latterly 2 minutes before they gate closing. It's unacceptable.

  2. lack of fruits Since the very first day we had the choice between apples and (disgusting, sorry to say that but that's the truth) watermelon. We have been complaining, asking for more fruits. Every single day they told us "don't worry, tomorrow we'll be delivered with more fruits". And again and again every day. Only the last day we've had some papaia. Nothing else. It's absolutely incomprehensible given the price we pay.

  3. no hot chocolate for breakfast for the kids. Only milk or coffee. No pizza, no french fries, and no specific food for the kids. Never in 10 days. I've never seen it before, even in a 3 star hotel.

  4. the kids club was literally horrible. No activity offered to the kids. Only supervision from a person who was there to do nothing. No plays at the beach or at the swimming pool. Nothing. Our kids complained a lot as they didn't want to go to the kids club. First time it happens to us. We had chosen this hotel because there was a kids club and we expected a 5 star level kids club.

  5. in our room the bathroom and toilet were ourside. Full of insects, moschitos, lezards... were comimg to us everytime we went to the toilets. It was extremely uncomfortable. It's good to have toilets outside as an option. But it cannot be the only option given the number of insects that were constantly there.

  6. the TV didn't work in the room. We mentioned it several times. Nobody came to fix it. No entertainment for our kids.

  7. we upgraded to all inclusive, but we couldn't even have an expresso coffee with all inclusive. Not even for breakfast. Even 3 stars hotels offer a nespresso machine.

  8. fournitures at the bar were ridiculously poor. Not even a coca cola light! My wife loves it. They always said it wasn't available. We could have one, by miracle, one day. Strawberry juice was also unavailable, no tequila (no margarita).

  9. we did the PCR test. The day of the exam they told us to come at 11, then came back at 2, than at 3, than at 4. Than we waited for 30 minutes, then another 15 minutes in front of the clinic. It's unacceptable.

  10. many people at the bar and at the reception barely speak English. Many times we asked for a cocktail (simple cocktails) but they didn't know what it was. So we had to change as our explanations weren't successful. The waiting time to have a drink was very long, even if there was almost no-one at the bar.

  11. even juice for kids was not always available. Mango juice or pineapple juice for exemple was unavailable.

  12. 3 restaurants were supposed to be available, but only 1 was available with the all inclusive package. So we went to the same restaurants for 10 days. Quite disappointing for a 5 stars hotel who offers different...

Stay: 2 adults + toddler in Garden Villa with Pool Full board

Honestly speaking it was breathtaking when we got to the resort by boat. There was confusion on how we would get to the island post flight as no information was given to us beforehand. A representative met us outside Male airport and handled the transfers. Once we got to Kihaa, we were greeted by staff, drums, drinks and wet towels to freshen up.

All food is halal and with full board tea/coffee (with/without milk) is included. There is also virgin cocktails and fresh coconut available at the bar at an extra charge.

This resort seems to be called Kihaa and Kihaad.

There was some constructions going on and the map of Kihaa seems outdated (this has been raised with the marketing team, so it will be addressed). There was mention of a upcoming boutique, but there's a steak house in it's place (no mention of steakhouse on the map, again this is being updated). We were looking for Hanifaru tea house according to the map, but it was a games room instead.

The meals were buffet style, my partner ended up getting food poisoning, and no there isn't a nurse/doctor on site. Was given water dissolved powder for him to drink. He was better after a day, but missed out on his meals (they did send food to the room but he was too ill to eat).

Our room was comfortably proportioned with a decent sized private pool (water is always cold). At first our TV wasn't working, however the technician came and replaced it. The movie selection is great, they use IPTV and it has all the latest movies. The bathroom would benefit with a retractable waching line to dry wet clothes. There is gaps between windows and doors where lizards and bugs have sneaked in (bug spray is provided). The room lighting is on the dark side however I think this is intentional to reduce light pollution.

During our stay we have seen many fish and fauna (sharks, mantas, bats, birds, dragonflies, beetles, lizards, spiders, crabs etc.).

They have a manta ray and whaleshark feeding every evening at 6:30pm which my toddler loved (Kihaa time is +1hr Male time).

We also went to see the bonfire music night, movie night and singing/dancing show during our stay.

The Kihaa app is behind on responding, I used it during my stay and it hasn't benefited at all, it was supposed to make requesting things quicker but all my requests remained pending even 4-5 days later (we had to ask again in person). This is being addressed by management.

To begin with customer service was great especially Ibrahim, Abdur Rahman, Anthony, Suhel and I think her name was Sara (lady in pink tshirt and hijab) (couldn't compliment them enough for their hospitality).

On our second last day there was an incident where another guest unprovoked made a racist remark towards by partner as we walked past the bar. The bar man serving these guests avoided making eye contact with us or calling for help. I asked the other staff member to call management. We spoke to reception straight after. The manager spoke to us the next day to follow up. We appreciate our concerns were addressed and the guest was spoken to.

We opted for breakfast in our pool one day and it was great.

We had treatments booked at the spa on our last day. I had the foot reflexology and bath stories (jacuzzi bath) both were really good and very relaxing, the spa staff made me feel welcome and gave me a wet towel and drink on arrival. I was also given a mint tea after my first treatment.

A strong contender for the worse holiday ever. From arrival at the airport we were made to feel unwelcome by their staff and lied to on multiple occasions regarding their "included" transfers. Clearly laying the groundwork for the scam that was about to ensue. Upon arrival to the resort we were hit with an additional $800 bill for "transfers". I had already paid for these privately and opted not to use their services as it was extortionate. When I challenged this, the bill was changed to $300 and told that this was a mandatory charge because the package they had sold the booking agent was too low and we had to pay this so they could afford the ongoing services. This argument went on for the duration of our stay. I asked to speak to management and spoke to 3 different people before getting to speak to the manager. After a few more conversations with the manager over a 3 day period, it surfaced he was not the manager at all. I demanded that the manager come out to see me. The staff member just returned with a phone call to someone from sales and marketing... again I demanded the actual manager comes out. Once again he refused to come out of his office and continued hiding and avoiding me. Instead, opting to send his staff out. The fees were eventually waived (at 11:30pm the night before we left). On our last day a staff member came and said I had to sign a disclaimer as I had received "compensation". Upon reading, they were asking me to sign away my free will of leaving reviews, sharing my experiance and essentially all rights to disclose any events that occurred. I worry for all the people who unknowingly just signed away all their rights. I immediately refused to sign and the employee scurried away. Upon checking out, I was presented with another diccument to sign that simply stated I had received the compensation and none of the other nonsense. The staff were extremely rude and dismissive whenever asked for anything. Allergies were not taken seriously and simply told that the fruit was allergen free. The food itself was bland and repetitive every day. Nothing more than a poor quality school dinner. The buffet was baren on each occasion and the "live cooking" stations were just reheating food in a pan. The room itself was rundown, dark and hidden in the trees. The water ran brown from the taps. There was not a single piece of 5* about the resort. There were overflowing bins with rats running around them. Overall it was a complete let down and scam. Not a single day passed where we could switch off and relax. We were just left thinking "what will happen next"

It is not a 5 star resort!! It is not even worth 1 star....The whole island is a big ruine! People who gave a better review have never been to a resort in the Maldives. No matter how cheap the offer is... spend your money elsewhere. Flash sales are made via trip-dot-com. The price starts from €135 for 2 people + $400 per person for the transfer. It seems like a great super offer because the resort advertises 5-star prices on other websites with old pictures. Restaurant dramatic. Every day no choice and the same food (pasta, rice, potato, 1 fish, 1 meat and steamed vegetables). People coming half an hour later, do not have any choice but scraping the leftovers. All inclusive does not exist. There are no snacks or proper cocktails. Bungalows are very old and moist, no water pressure etc. Everything is closed, no activities, no cleaning, no maintenance, no hygiene! The only beautiful thing is the water, the white sand and reef. There are some places on the island you can take beautiful photo's. On the YouTube videos you see one of the six bungalows near the dive Jetty which are repainted. Photo 1: everywhere leaves and coconuts Photo 2: no maintenance on the beaches Photo 3: water bungalows are ruïnes Photo 4: pool half full of water with leaves. All the restaurants are closed Photo 5: leaking roof of the bungalow Photo 6: In the morning everywhere glasses and bottles near the pool area with filthy cushions. My 1 star review was not shown in Google reviews. I did not know that the 1 star are blocked. So changed it to a 3 star review.

To begin with customer service was great especially Ibrahim, Abdur Rahman, Anthony, Suhel and I think her name was Sara (lady in pink tshirt and hijab) (couldn't compliment them enough for their hospitality). On our second last day there was an incident where another guest unprovoked made a racist remark towards by partner as we walked past the bar. The bar man serving these guests avoided making eye contact with us or calling for help. I asked the other staff member to call management. We spoke to reception straight after. The manager spoke to us the next day to follow up. We appreciate our concerns were addressed and the guest was spoken to. We opted for breakfast in our pool one day and it was great. We had treatments booked at the spa on our last day. I had the foot reflexology and bath stories (jacuzzi bath) both were really good and very relaxing, the spa staff made me feel welcome and gave me a wet towel and drink on arrival. I was also given a mint tea after my first treatment. (update to follow post partner's spa treatment, PCR test and departure)

A strong contender for the worse holiday ever. From arrival at the airport we were made to feel unwelcome by their staff and lied to on multiple occasions regarding their "included" transfers. Clearly laying the groundwork for the scam that was about to ensue. Upon arrival to the resort we were hit with an additional $800 bill for "transfers". I had already paid for these privately and opted not to use their services as it was extortionate. When I challenged this, the bill was changed to $300 and told that this was a mandatory charge because the package they had sold the booking agent was too low and we had to pay this so they could afford the ongoing services. This argument went on for the duration of our stay. I asked to speak to management and spoke to 3 different people before getting to speak to the manager. After a few more conversations with the manager over a 3 day period, it surfaced he was not the manager at all. I demanded that the manager come out to see me. The staff member just returned with a phone call to someone from sales and marketing... again I demanded the actual manager comes out. Once again he refused to come out of his office and continued hiding and avoiding me. Instead, opting to send his staff out. The fees were eventually waived (at 11:30pm the night before we left). On our last day a staff member came and said I had to sign a disclaimer as I had received "compensation". Upon reading, they were asking me to sign away my free will of leaving reviews, sharing my experiance and essentially all rights to disclose any events that occurred. I worry for all the people who unknowingly just signed away all their rights. I immediately refused to sign and the employee scurried away. Upon checking out, I was presented with another diccument to sign that simply stated I had received the compensation and none of the other nonsense. The staff were extremely rude and dismissive whenever asked for anything. Allergies were not taken seriously and simply told that the fruit was allergen free. The food itself was bland and repetitive every day. Nothing more than a poor quality school dinner. The buffet was baren on each occasion and the "live cooking" stations were just reheating food in a pan. The room itself was rundown, dark and hidden in the trees. The water ran brown from the taps. There was not a single piece of 5* about the resort. There were overflowing bins with rats running around them. Overall it was a complete let down and scam. Not a single day passed where we could switch off and relax. We were just left thinking "what will happen next"

It is not a 5 star resort!! It is not even worth 1 star....The whole island is a big ruine! People who gave a better review have never been to a resort in the Maldives. No matter how cheap the offer is... spend your money elsewhere. Flash sales are made via trip-dot-com. The price starts from €135 for 2 people + $400 per person for the transfer. It seems like a great super offer because the resort advertises 5-star prices on other websites with old pictures. Restaurant dramatic. Every day no choice and the same food (pasta, rice, potato, 1 fish, 1 meat and steamed vegetables). People coming half an hour later, do not have any choice but scraping the leftovers. All inclusive does not exist. There are no snacks or proper cocktails. Bungalows are very old and moist, no water pressure etc. Everything is closed, no activities, no cleaning, no maintenance, no hygiene! The only beautiful thing is the water, the white sand and reef. There are some places on the island you can take beautiful photo's. On the YouTube videos you see one of the six bungalows near the dive Jetty which are repainted. Photo 1: everywhere leaves and coconuts Photo 2: no maintenance on the beaches Photo 3: water bungalows are ruïnes Photo 4: pool half full of water with leaves. All the restaurants are closed Photo 5: leaking roof of the bungalow Photo 6: In the morning everywhere glasses and bottles near the pool area with filthy cushions. My 1 star review was not shown in Google reviews. I did not know that the 1 star are blocked. So changed it to a 3 star review.
