🌴 Maldives on a Budget: Local Islands Are the REAL Gems!

We came from Brazil for our honeymoon at Soneva Fushi. Expectations were extremely high because of all the amazing feedback we already had about the resort. These expectations moved from imagination to reality as soon as we landed in Malé and were greeted by the Soneva staff. We were driven in a wonderful Soneva sponsored Tesla electric car to the beautiful Soneva sea plane terminal, about 10 minutes away. Once there, we were greeted with their welcome drink, some snacks and that amazing cold towel, which I can still reproduce it’s feeling right now upon imagining it. After a short wait, our sea plane was ready to depart, and we were escorted from the terminal to the Soneva seaplane - one of the few seaplanes painted in hotel colors instead of the traditional Trans Maldivian colors. It felt great to feel that your resort had its ow seaplane. The trip to Soneva Fushi was amazing, a smooth flight with spectacular views of the atolls, I took so many Instagrammable photos while up there! We were so anxious to arrive, and in no time we were already landing in the middle of the ocean, by a small deck with a Soneva boat parked by its side. It was fantastic: leave the plane and jump into the boat. Once there, we were already greeted by many faces that we would see time and again around the resort making sure that things were always perfect as they should be: among them, General Manager Abhishek Sharma, who was extremely welcoming, friendly and had very good knowledge of who we were, why we were there, etc. It came as a very positive surprise! We also met our butler, Micky, who was a very sweet young man determined to make you feel absolutely relaxed while there. After that, we had a week of joyful moments! The highlights were: sunset party at the sandbank, the dolphins boat ride, snorkeling around the island, getting lost with the bikes on the island trails, the playing with the wild rabbits (until they realized they were getting no food from us), spending time at Out of the Blue and going down the water slide that falls on the sea a hundred times... oh, so many good memories. The room, the view, our private pool... oh yes, the chocolate rooms! How could I forget them? The chocolate rooms were otherworldly. You step inside, your senses go crazy, you can’t leave without taking some chocolate with you. Sunrises and sunsets were stunning, I had them all recorded various modes to make sure that my memory will never erase a single detail of it. It was the honeymoon we dreamed about. We’ll be forever glad. Actually x we’re already planning our return, perhaps for our first anniversary in 2020? Fingers crossed. Soneva delivered it, thank you!

If you want to find a Place you have never ever seen before this Hotel is the right choice for you. We have experienced our unforgettable Honeymoon there. Together with your shoes the amazing staff does its best to take away our everyday-life Problems from the very first moment of arrival. It feels like going back to childhood when you cycle around the amazingly green little Island, discovering rabbits and funny little running birds. The sea is cyristal clear and we found deep relaxing sleep on our marvellous villa's terrace. And the Food.....just phantastic. We still wonder how such a never ending variety of finest Food can be offered daily at this end of the world! Surrounded by super friendly, caring staff we have enjoyed every Moment of this Journey so much. It was an uncomparable Holiday, and if you think there is nothing that could make it better you discover the Open Air Cinema , where at night time you can watch a movie right under the stars. Just wonderful!

We have twice visited Soneva Fushi over the past two decades (last in 2016) and combined a 5-night stay there this time with a stay at nearby Amilla (having visited neighbouring Anantara Kihava in 2018).||We flew with Qatar Airlines from BHX to MLE via DOH, our trip arranged once again by Caroline at stylishresorts.com. Thanks to both for a great service.|||Our inter-island speedboat transfer went very smoothly, the Soneva launch arriving to collect us at the appointed time. We were introduced to our butler ("barefoot guardian" in Soneva-speak) Miqdad on the boat, and check-in completed easily.||Since much has changed since our last visit (including the loss of the underground wine cellar and the library, but with the enlargement of the old sunset bar, the development of an overwater dining complex and 8 water-villas), Miqdad gave us a quick tour of the island before taking us to our "home", villa 54.||As returning guests we enjoyed an upgraded room (2-bed, 1 bathroom, small kitchen), a bottle of champagne and free snacks and non-alcoholic drinks from the well-stocked fridge and minibar. The kitchen had both kettle and a Nespresso machine and cafetierre, perfect for the coffee addict.||The villas still have the same island rustic charm, with an open-air bathroom featuring a great bath and two showers (one outside). The A/C and fans both worked well, being quiet and unobtrusive.||Perhaps a few of the sockets could be updated to offer USB/USB-C charging? The Wi-Fi was not reliable throughout the stay, thankfully there was no need to work-from-the-island.||The plungepool is 1.4m deep, but has no steps and had we been using the 2-bed villa with small children this might have been a safety concern.|The front "garden" leads down to the beach, although it is worth noting the properties lower in the 40s and lower 50s are onto a much wider beach - for 53-56 the beach disappears at high tide.|There is also little direct sunshine, as the gardens are all quite overgrown. The large area given over to a water feature at the rear seems wasted, perhaps it could be reduced in size and a private sundeck built?||We have always stayed on the sunset side, as we have no issue with the near-neighbour island of Eydhafushi, although some might. The calls-to-prayer and prayers of the muezzin and imam drift gently on the wind, and we found them sonorous and relaxing. The background hum of a generator/compressor less so, particularly on an otherwise still evening.||Soneva has always impressed with its "Silent Service" - the room is always prepared while guests breakfast, and the housekeeping staff are rarely encountered. This has now been expanded by a service whereby any bottle of wine purchased one day "follows you" to your next dining venue. Smart.|One feature which was very welcome and rarely seen was the free laundry service, which just attracts a "donation" of $11 to a local charity. ||Breakfast has always been a high-point for the resort, and it remains "Best in Class".|It was especially good to meet Sira again, who has been with the resort since day 1. On our past visits he ran the fresh fruits offerings, earning our nickname "Mr Mango", a role which has passed to his son. Hopper with curry and dhal from Sira were superb, they'll be much-missed when he retires.|We had the same waiter- Allu - looking after us for breakfast throughout our stay, and we also met Miqdad each morning. Nashifa at Out of the Sea was also most welcoming, as were the team of sommeliers.||Soneva are moving towards catering for the "money no object" crowd, with an emphasis on larger groups and multi-generational families, rather than couples||Soneva have adopted a policy of staff not wearing name badges, ostensibly to encourage guests to ask and to facilitate interaction. We make a great effort to engage with staff when we travel, but we felt the absence of name badges definitely discouraged this and raises the risk that staff are merely seen as nameless servants.|We would also note that other than staff in guest-facing roles, there was often no greeting or even acknowledgement from staff passed on the island paths. ||The main negative about Soneva Fushi is the cost, and in some cases the poor value for money when compared with other 5* resorts, with prices for much of the F&B offering and experiences 50-100% higher. It's hard to know whether this is just general inflation, or a consequence of the involvement of Private Equity as a co-owner.||For example, the So Primitive grill beach dining experience (grill & buried in sand) is $350 + service/tax (26%) ie $441 per person, excluding drinks! For that price two of you can dine at many UK Michelin-starred restaurants.|At Out of the Sea (formerly Bar (a)Bara), a Cold Seafood Platter (for 2) is offered at $428. Plus 26%.|A 90 minute glass-blowing session costs $300 for one, $500 for two. Plus 26%.|2hours on the Sandbank "with umbrella, water and towel" is $165 each. Plus 26%,|A 330ml lager is $12, craft beers $21. Mocktails $19. Plus 26%.||Oddly, the In-Villa dining offering is both broad and very reasonably priced, as are the mini-bar alcoholic drinks.||We suggest a couple allow a minimum $1,000 per day for in-resort expenses during a stay.||Would we recommend Soneva Fushi? It depends. If money is no object, absolutely, but for many people there is much better value to be had at...

To sum it up: expectations were high – and they were not only met, but exceeded! We had the best family holiday one could ever imagine.|You can find tons of pictures and videos and reviews of Soneva Fushi – but they all cannot represent the “feel” once you enter the Soneva seaplane lounge, the Soneva branded seaplane and Soneva Fushi itself.|After a long international flight, they don’t let you wait for long in their seaplane lounge – we had the 7:40 am Emirates arrival, received our bags and were in the lounge by 8:30 were we were handed over fresh water melon juice and homemade Nachos with the “Soneva” guacamole. After a very short stop in the lounge our seaplane departetd at 9:00 already (the shortest seaplane waiting time we ever had)– and we were in the resort by 9:30 – 10:30 Soneva time and this is were the real magic began. They invited us for breakfast and even extended breakfast for 3pm for in-villa dining, so that we could directly fully enjoy and relax and wouldn’t have to worry about anything. |This is just a little example of how high their service level is. For breakfast our host Majeed brought our desired drinks even before we could think about that we would wish for any new ones. He was such a gem and we miss him already! The breakfast spread is to die for. We didn’t experience all different breakfast rooms up until day three, because there was so much too explore and to taste.|As we were fortunate enough to stay 14 nights at Soneva Fushi, we could experience all dining outlets more than once. And they were all fantastic. They all cater for different tastes and cuisines and you will never get bored. There are so many choices – you fear of missing out. And the best: You can order like three appetizers and one main and are not limited to the typical one appetizer, one main, one dessert “rule” that so many resorts in the Maldives insist on. They even encourage you to try a lot, because they want to show you their favourite dishes. We personally love dining and lunch at Out of the Blue – the staff there (as everywhere) was really amazing and we loved having a look at the sunset and enjoying the cooling breeze while having dinner. |We were traveling with 3 kids of different ages – and I’m very confident in saying, that they all had the time of their lives at Soneva Fushi. For teenagers they had Max as a Mr. Friday who invited the youngsters every morning to a fun and sporty programme for the day. And for the kids under 12 there was the spectacular kids club. The den itself is really iimpressive with a huge pool and a really fast waterslide that even parents can enjoy. But apart from being impressive in its size – it is the staff the make the den shine and stand out compared to other kids club. Our kids really fell in love with Donna, Soja, Soo, On, Nadoo, Nadi. They were like big sisters and brothers for them and their engagement was on an unmatched level. Donna even organized Henna to decorate our kids with Henna Tattoos, just because the kids had spoken to her about that they would love to these. They made the cutest bags, jewellery, and t-shirts while playing new card games with all of the team. The even had a party night which was pure fun! Thank you so much for your engagement all of you and we hope to see you again soon.|The snorkeling was some of the best we had in the Maldives. It was our daily routine to snorkel from out of the blue to out of the sea and we spotted sharks, turtles and lots and lots of schools of fish. Some days even dolphins were swimming right in front of out of the blue. |During our stay they had a special Soneva Star – JP Liendi – visitng the island and doing a lot of complimentary fitness courses. They were exhausting and he was very demanding- BUT they were so so so good and we loved our trainings with him. |I really have so much more to say about Soneva Fushi, but then the review would never end – so if you have specific questions, just drop me a PM.|Lastly our experience wouldn”t have been the same without our barefoot guardian Miqdad. Wow! From the first minute we entered the boat until after we reached our hometown he surprised us with an unmatched service level and friendliness. He surprised us with a bottle of champagne and fruit baskets during the stay, with beautiful villa decorations on several occasions. He organized all of our dining and experience reservations – and we didn’t even had to ask for that. It was just magically done. He became such a good friend of our family and the kids especially and always knew where they were. When they fell asleep during dinner time, he drove them to the villa and made sure, that their bikes found their way back, too. He brought them to the den’s party, he picked them up to drive them to the cinema. He was proactive and caring. We could not have asked for a better barefoot guardian and he will stay in our hearts forever. As we landed in our home town, he sent us a video of our departure and our seaplane cruising above Soneva Fushi one last time. He really is the best!|I don’t want to forget Shazu – I was writing a ton of emails with her before our stay at Soneva. She was so patient and helpul with the millions of questions and requests I had before our stay. Thank you!|Will we come back? For sure. We cannot go anywhere else in the Maldives anymore, as long as budget allows. Soneva...

Hotelbericht Soneva Fushi Baa-Atoll||Ein Paradies im Paradies||Buchung:|Die Buchung des Hotels habe ich über Michaela Reisser via Airtours vorgenommen. Gebucht haben wir 5 Nächte Robinson Crusoe Suite with Pool und 5 Nächte One Bedroom Over Water Retreat with Slide. Perfekt!||Das Restaurant „Out of the Blue“ war während unseres Aufenthaltes weg.
