Mid April 2023, we'd been in La Paz for over a week but wanted a change of venue and neighborhood, after reading great reviews, we drove over and met a couple of guests just inside the security gate who spoke highly of their stay.
Maria, the owner, showed us around and we booked ourselves 5 nights for the following week.
Upon entering this architectural delight of native stone, gardens and open spaces we knew we were in the right place.
Our room was large, equipped with a work space, cabinet, microwave, fridge , table, a partial wall with open space for storage, a comfortable king bed, TV, AC split, dresser and a large bathroom, with a shower that had great water pressure. The room, the hotel and the outdoor areas were very clean. The people who work there are sweet and kind and always happy to assist.
We had coffee there nearly every morning, my husband had breakfast, and cervezas nearly every night at our spot in front of the open air kitchen.
You can walk through a beautiful, safe, upscale neighborhood to reach a super Ley grocery, you'll need to cross a busy street but it's doable.
The hotel is pet friendly, (what we needed with our pup). The 2 resident dogs were a delight. Maja, always wanting to play and Pata, always wanting a little love. The cat is a beauty and always up for a good petting.
We walked our dog every day in the Marina it was nice to walk long distances without traffic.
We left to take our ferry across to the mainland only to find out it had been canceled without notice. We called Maria, came back to the hotel for 2 more nights. Maria went out of her way to assist us in figuring out an alternate plan.
Maria is continuing to expand her hotel, she's building a large apartment on the 2nd floor.
We left with great memories. Can't wait to come back!
Spanish is the primary language here but Maria's English...
Read moreDriving up to the Hotel Alcatraz, one might pause. The area is neither residential nor touristy. The door is locked from the inside. ||||Once inside. It feels like paradise. Before I go further, I must tell you what makes this place 5-Star: the owners, Gerardo and Maria. When you stay here, you feel like family.||||The rooms are large, the beds cozy and comfortable, the layout attractive. Lots of windows, indoor lighting, outlets. The Wi-Fi was reliable and fast. I was on the second floor and found lounging outside on "beach" chairs very relaxing, indeed.||||A simple breakfast of fruit (nice variety, high quality) and coffee (french press, splendid) comes with the room. But the owners will make you any of a number of breakfasts, and I delighted in each. I found the chilaquiles particularly mouth watering and delicious. ||||Dinner can be had a the hotel restaurant, which is also open to "the public." There is a standard menu, but with a bit of warning, the owners are open to a variety of requests. I had several dinners there, and each came with a luxurious fresh salad. My favorite main course was their Steak Arracherra, which was ever so tender and flavorful. ||||Some standard questions: Room has bottled water. Refill drinking water easily available. Don't drink from tap. Okay to flush standard toilet paper. Showers large, work well. Parking on street is plentiful and safe. ||||I can't...
Read moreI liked the location, but you need a car. |Our room was very spacious and well appointed. There is no heat in the winter. Keep that in mind. It does get colder at night. We had drinking water and all we needed. The curtains were not what I would call blackout and our room had many windows. Our room also smelled of sewage after the windows were shut but that is not unusual in Mexico. As always in Mexico things can be loud but it quieted down here and noise was not a concern. |We opted for breakfast. My only concern was that the lid to the yogurt container was covered in mold on...
