Walking through the Mayan ruins on the mainland is fascinating but participating in a walk through the jungle and a sweat lodge experience is on a higher level. It's easier to imagine yourself living in another time and culture. Sergio is a wonderful source of information and delivers it with passion unrivaled in our other experiences in the area. He's also got a great sense of humor and is a fantastic divemaster!

Villa Maya is a great place if you want to see another side of the beautiful island Cozumel. It was a unique experience to sleep in the middle of the jungle. Sergio and Cecilia are very friendly hosts and we enjoyed our breakfast talks every morning. They gave us a lot information about the island and tips on what to do. Highly recommended!

Visiting Villa maya was a great part of our cozumel immersion. Sergio was able to immerse us into the mayan culture as well as identify the flora and fauna of cozumel and how it shaped the Mayan world.

Well Worth the Effort

It's not easy getting there. But then again, it's not intended to be. This is truly a jungle experience. Powered by a few solar panels and submarine batteries, and fed by the same natural water that fills the island cenotes, this destination provides its guests with an authentic jungle experience with just the right level of comfort (read insect resistant dwellings with fans and outdoor facilities for when nature calls).

But the star of the experience is Sergio. This is his place and has been for decades. A biologist by education and trade, he is a dedicated and passionate environmental advocate and ambassador. And his knowledge of all things Cozumel is impressive. From flora to fauna to marine life to island history and politics. Plus, he's a dive instructor and former manager of one of the area's largest dive operations, which makes him especially cool in my book.

Take the nature tour and walk the paths of the Mayans along the stone walls, listen and watch for the various birds that call this jungle home, and learn about the incredible variety of plant life and microbes that thrive here.

So while the food may be simple and not of tremendous value, it fits the environment and the purpose of this special place: the jungle and its spirit provide you with what you need if not always what you want. We all could benefit greatly from more of such experiences and certainly from more of such...

It was so quiet and peaceful. Thank you Serg for an incredible experience on your property, teaching us about Mayan History and the Biology of the island, and treating us like family. We hope to visit you again soon! We enjoyed Beautiful walking trails In the Rainforest, natural cenotes, wildlife and birdwatching. Washrooms, Electricity and wifi...
