Hotel Irekua — Hotel in Michoacán

This small hotel is a great option if you are in Zitacuaro or if you want to use it as a base for visiting the Monarch Butterflies in nearby Ocampo or Angangueo. Irekua has been open for about a year and is located near downtown on Avenida Revolucion. Getting there is fairly easy, via Avenida Revolucion by either of two junctions off of Mexico Highway 15 from Toluca (one junction is marked by a white obelisk monument, the other is marked by a man on a horse statue). The hotel sits across the street from a Pemex gas station, and has a pharmacy on one side and a small grocery store on the other side. There is an internet cafe about 2-3 doors down, while the zocalo is about 2-3 blocks away. The family that manages the hotel, as well as their friendly staff, are very helpful with local information and tips. They were very fast to respond to my booking inquiry and provided excellent information about the hotel, including pictures. The hotel is non-smoking and includes a small restaurant. Rates only include a continental breakfast (fresh fruit or juice, bread or toast, and tea/coffee/milk), but they do offer warm breakfast choices at reasonable prices. The hotel is very safe, with security cameras in the hallways, as well as in the entrance area and customer only parking lot. The hotel entrance and parking lot door are also locked at night for added safety. Rooms are not heated, but they have space heaters available upon request. Note that Zitacuaro does not get as cold at night as nearby Ocampo or Angangueo. Each floor has five rooms, located on three levels (100's, 200's and 300's), but the hotel does have an elevator. Rooms 101 and 102 face the front of the hotel (and the street), room 103 is next to the stairs/elevator in the middle of the building, while rooms 104 and 105 are located toward the back of the building. Note that this hotel does suffer from street noise since it sits right on the main road through town (Avenida Revolucion), but there are options to mitigate this problem. First, try to get a room toward the back, then one of the higher levels. Rooms 304 or 305 should have the least amount of noise migration from the lobby, restaurant and street. The room I had (#103) was excellent. Everything in the room was spotlessly clean and well laid out. The bed and pillows were clean and very comfortable, with top notch bedding. The folded towel in the shape of swan when I arrived was a very nice touch! The room had a small desk area and chair, along with a closet space to hang up clothing. The room also had a small luggage rack at the foot of the bed, which was also very convenient. The hallway and common areas were all nicely decorated and filled with plants, just another indication of the effort the owners are making here. Stayed at the Irekua for one night to go and see the butterflies at Cerro Pelon. ||Comfortable, clean room. Friendly staff. Simple but adequate breakfast. ||But it's expensive for what you get. Nos hospedamos a fines de enero y principios de febrero del 2016 por 3 noches. Su ubicación es excelente, queda muy cerca el centro, para llegar caminando sin necesidad de sacar el auto. Cuenta con estacionamiento, restaurante exquisito, personal muy amable y servicial. Nos tocó una habitación con balcón a la calle, con cama King, una individual para mi hijo, tv con telecable, baño grande con tina, calefacción la cual era muy necesaria porque en esa temporada hace frío. Hay elevador. Y en el hospedaje nos incluía desayuno americano y ya sólo pedíamos el plato fuerte para quedar satisfechos, todo riquísimo con el mejor sazón. Es un hotel pequeño y tranquilo pero por estar en la avenida principal (Revolución) se comienzan a escuchar los autos y el ajetreo desde temprano pero era nuestro despertador para no dormír de más y poder disfrutar los pocos días que estuvimos en el bello Zitácuaro y...
