I stayed here five nights with a small cultural group. It’s just off the Plaza Grande and is well situated to explore this really interesting town. Our check in was fast and friendly, and we enjoyed a tequila-based welcome drink. My room, “Alcatraz” on the second floor, was large , but except for a tiny one opening on the inner patio, was windowless. There’s no A/C and either small plug-on units or a fireplace provides heat. My room had a fireplace but there was no kindling or matches just eight pieces of firewood. It was quite chilly the first night so the manager cheerfully started a fire for me. The room had adequate outlets, the bed was very comfortable, the hot water was slow to act but adequate, and the room was dark. Due to the lack of windows, the room was very dark-so dark that I had to fumble around to find a light switch when I needed to get up in the middle of the night. The wi-fi was really bad here; in spite of a number of routers, none of them consistently worked. The walls are thick and what’s really needed is a router for each room. I’m a light sleeper. If you also are easily awakened, don’t expect to get any sleep after 6 AM. Beginning promptly at 6, Patzcuaro’s numerous churches started calling the faithful to mass. Other than representing an obsessive gesture of religious control, these bells are totally obnoxious. Yeah, Mexico is a noisy place but bells every 15 minutes for hours at a time is a menace. I doubt that it’s any better in any other hotel in town. I started going to bed at 930 PM so I’d be rested by 6. The people who worked here, particularly Gabriel, were outstandingly gracious and kind. They really made this a welcoming hotel. The owners...
Read moreDon't get fooled by the pictures! This is not a 4 star hotel. Since the ownership changed, the restaurant on premises, while it used to be rated as good, is no longer open - except for breakfast. No room service - as advertised. The Jacuzzi is empty and locked. During the booking process we were told there are only 2 rooms left and we booked in a rush, choosing to pay at the hotel. The prices - suddenly in MXN pesos - immediately jumped up, as the current exchange rates were not reflected and we couldn't do anything about it without having to pay a penalty. Bottom line, the hotel was empty! The rooms upstairs, while being bright due to the outside windows, had no heating except the open fireplaces beside the bed. We had to use it - end of November in Patzcuaro is cold at night! Very romantic but we ended up smelling like a chimney and same happened to all our clothes in the room. The bed sheets didn't look clean. We had 2 large towels and one small face towel - to share between us. The mini fridge was unplugged and - of course - empty. To add insult to injury - and not blaming this on the hotel - at 5am they started the firecrackers in the streets and the sounds were loud enough to wake up the dead. ||To make things short, we paid for 2 nights and after one night there we decided it was enough, but of course, there was no refund, even partial (we had 2 rooms booked), not even the credit for another stay, as one of the staff suggested to the receptionist, who...
Read moreThis hotel is one block from the town square, so finding shopping and dining venues is easy and convenient.|However, this hotel offered little more than frustration. Wi-Fi did not work, at all, until 6am, even if you were literally sitting next to the router. A maintenance man told us we had a router above our door that needed some work, so he said he was going to get a ladder to look at it, and he never returned. NO air-conditioning. Fridge in the room did not work. Bathroom lights were out. Room smelled like a camp fire, and there was freshly burned wood in the fireplace. A fire? In July?? Room was spacious, and bed was comfortable. However, it was so warm, we had to sleep with the windows open. People waved as they walked by. No privacy!! There was no vent in the bathroom, so after a shower, everything was totally wet. Floor tiles were so slippery, it really became hazardous.|SO many of these things could be easily fixed, but it didn't appear management...
