Boca De Agua is an outstanding hotel and experience. They have built an architectural masterpiece and beautiful vision of what is a boutique hotel set in a natural jungle environment. From an architectural point of view, every facet of this hotel has been well thought out. If you're looking for a peaceful and secluded oasis to relax and unwind, this is the place for you.
We visited in March 2024, about 4 months after they initially opened for a 5 night stay. At the time of visiting there were around 14 treehouses open with the remaining ten or so under construction.
The treehouse rooms are a fantastic villa like living space, it casts you back to a playhouse that you might imagine in the trees. You're immersed within the forest, with small details like a tree growing in the courtyard and plants in the 'rainfall shower'. I adore the hammocks within the villa and the semi outdoor personal lounge space. Consider upgrading to the rooms with the plunge pool as well, fantastic for couples or young families. That said you are also at one with nature so it does mean that jungle life (creepy crawlies) can very occasionally find them in the room now and again.
Facilities wise, there's access to the super calm Laguna Bacalar, the exclusivity could be compared to being in Bora Bora or the Maldives. The pool is also a relaxing experience with ten sun loungers available, situated just below the restaurant/bar area. We highly recommend the sunrise kayaking tour with the very enthusiastic Cesar. In fact, all the staff are very friendly and provide a top level of service. Luis was on check in on our first night and helped plan our activities throughout our stay, which included an in room couples massage (for which the therapists brought in their own portable massage tables). The mini shop to buy goodies (like the soap, or t-shirts: if you can find sizes on stock!) and the board games/book exchange are a nice touch
The restaurant is fantastic too, prices are very reasonable if you compare it to the prices you would pay at up market hotels and beach clubs in Tulum or Cancun, although clearly there are cheaper food and drink options available in Bacalar town itself. Highlights are the fish curry, octopus, prawn main dishes, along with the conchinita tacos. We dined for 4 out of 5 days, but that's probably the limit as otherwise we would be repeating the menu.
Constructive criticism for such a new hotel would be as follows: while there is the opportunity for a digital detox in such a place, wifi can be a bit patchy, consider investing in mesh wifi and more wifi points for a more stable experience? an in room safe would provide good peace of mind water pressure could be a bit more consistent our room only had one set of curtains, it would be good to fully install these given the view can be quite exposed an outdoor shower to rinse off by the pool and lagoon there's sense of exclusiveness might diminish when the ten new ones rooms open, maybe add more sun loungers and shade on the roof terrace to help with capacity, and extend the lagoon lounge space.
Following up on previous reviews: they have installed lighting around the sign at the entrance: at the time of writing the Google maps pin is on the main road (which is the location of the right turning into the dirt road to the hotel). It's entrance is situated at the road sign to Xcaret
All this aside, it's a magical experience and I fully recommend Boca de Agua for a stay of 2-4 nights. Five is probably the top end of the range before you might get a bit bored. It's really worth trying it as soon as possible: before the extra ten rooms open and while prices are relatively cheap (as they fully deserve to be charging much much more than our very good rate). I really wish the team here all the best, the employment it offers the community in an environmentally conscious way is what truly makes this place special. In 10 years I pray that Laguna Bacalar remains the sanctuary that it is today, so let's hope that this establishment and others in the area try keep...
Read moreWe saw pictures of Boca de Agua online and were excited to stay in an architectural gem. They had a discount for stays over 4 nights, so we booked for 5 - BIG MISTAKE.
The hotel seems to have been created exclusively for Instagram photos. It has beautiful rooms and a gorgeous location, but if you stay more than a day things will get tricky. For a hotel billed as a luxurious regenerative experience, service and hospitality were remarkably absent.
When we arrived, we were ignored at reception and had to flag someone down. We were eventually taken to our room but given no explanation of where anything was on the sprawling property - it took us two days to realize there was a whole common area beneath the restaurant. We were never provided options for the wellness treatments or water adventure experiences. Most surprisingly, we were not told how to contact room service (which is through WhatsApp).
Room service was unbelievably slow. We waited an hour for guacamole, for instance. We also had to regularly ask them to refill our water dispenser and pick up left over dishes. This is unacceptable given the propensity for ants, flies, and mosquitos in the area. Housekeeping was excellent in maintaining the room and keeping it clean, however.
Given the hotel’s emphasis on sustainability and conservation (part of our motivation to stay), we were surprised that no one gave us basic instructions about how to protect the local environment. For example, Bacalar restricts wearing sunscreen in water because the chemicals destroys the microscopic stromalites that give the lake its clear vivid character. There was also no mention that we’d encounter foxes and monkeys (that was a beautiful surprise! But why not give us a heads up?).
As for Flora, the hotel restaurant and bar - what a disappointment! The menu is wildly overpriced (compared even to similar restaurants in Mexico City). Apps and mains are double what you could get at any other nice local restaurant. Each cocktail averages above 400mx (20usd).
Every single time we ordered dinner or lunch, there was a problem with the order - we were served the wrong food, there was meat on dishes ordered vegetarian, condiments arrived burnt, sometimes orders were just forgotten. Once we ordered the ~400mx beef kofta and we were served a tiny order of essentially raw meat. The chicken doner contains an embarrassingly small amount of chicken for the same price. One of us is vegetarian and it was surprising how few substantial vegetarian dishes there were. Aside from a few dips and salads, there were few options. You can’t even order a smoothie here! This is all strange for a wellness-oriented hotel located in a country with an incredible variety of vegetarian dishes and protein options. The veg dishes we ordered (cheese quesadillas, hummus) were very small so we had to order a bunch. As a result every single dinner was around 2000mx/US$100.
Given the location, you are basically stuck with eating at this restaurant. The only way in or out of the hotel is a terrible bumpy dirt road that floods when it rains. ALL local taxis know this and will make you pay double or triple what you would pay to get anywhere else in Bacalar. If it rains, the road may even be completely blocked.
The staff who work there are friendly and helpful if you are very specific about your needs. But it’s clear the hospitality issues are structural - management is entirely absent. We never knew who to actually ask for help from. There’s lots of little issues too - window frames that don’t shut properly, our room smelling at times like sewage (!) - that also tarnished our time at this place.
It’s a shame, because the hotel design and location is gorgeous and the restaurant has all the elements to be really nice. But it doesn’t live up to its promise...
Read morePLEASE AVOID - I stayed at this resort for 6 nights as a first time visit to Bacalar,MX. Let's just get the HONEST bad points out of the way;
THE BAD:
SERVICE - This one is really the worst negative as I went during the slow season and there were a large number of staff compared to guests.
-The staff stood around in groups laughing and chatting when guests were dining. I should not have to ask for Water every time while staff is standing enjoying themselves in a group conversation. I tried the Chef's Menu which was $120+ per person (no set menu - chef decides). Waiter sets the dish on the table and walks away. No explanation of what I'm eating. Three pieces of ravioli, a small salad and 1 grilled octopus with a small desert for $120 + Tip and Tax. Makes no sense.
-I booked a In-Room massage early in the morning, and my Masseuse arrived nearly 30 mins late. No excuse for the amount of money you are paying to stay here.
I have visited 3rd world countries that have better roads than the ones that lead off the main highway to and from this hotel. I asked multiple employees why there is such a poor road when the hotel is obviously a multi-million dollar property and to my suspicion it is done on purpose and they all agreed. They don't want guests to leave once they enter. Unless you have a 4x4 you will be thrown around in the back of your taxi every time you come and go in to town. -There are only 8 day beds at the lagoon. So unless you are one of the few guests that wake up super early, chances are you will not get a bed to relax. -No GYM. For a wellness resort this is unacceptable. -There is only one restaurant on property that serves breakfast/lunch and dinner no additional options. Town is 20 minutes away and will cost you $20 each way. -No way to circulate the water in the in room pools. Bugs will settle on the surface. -Mosquitos - This area is right next to the lagoon if you are prone to bites DO NOT VISIT. You will get bit. One night I had to get up and leave due to being bit more than 20 times and my legs swelling up. When I asked for bug spray they gave me DEET when later that night they also offered a natural bug spray. This really infuriated me as you're a wellness resort offering a carcinogen as a primary option for your guests. [The fans should be turned on nightly to reduce bugs landing on you but they don't do this]
The GOOD:
-The Lagoon. This is why you're staying here. It is really peaceful early in the mornings. -The architecture - Aesthetically pleasing. -Nature. This property is in the middle of the jungle far away from town. -One young lady that worked the breakfast shift and one of the cleaners. Only nice staff members I came across during my time here.
Final Thoughts; If you are staying here for ONE night, DO IT. I stayed for 6 nights and regretted it. For the cost (3x average hotel in Bacalar) it should really be a white glove service resort which it really is not. For management: FIX THE ROAD! You cannot trap people at your resort with a bad road. IMPROVED Service will get them to stay. I have visited more than 30 countries and this stay was honestly one of my least...
