***READ to see how we got gaslit, guilt-tripped, and dragged out mid-buffet like a telenovela plot twist*** The hotel experience was overall disappointing, falling far short of expectations based on its marketing. Although it promotes itself as a luxury destination with countless amenities, the reality was a mix of misleading advertising, poor management, and discriminatory practices. Only three restaurants were open, with no online notice beforehand. The public beach was unusable due to thick seaweed, while the members-only beach—though clean—was tightly controlled, reinforcing a clear divide between members and non-members. This unequal treatment was felt in almost every aspect of the stay, from restricted access to facilities to premium alcohol (like El Patrón) being reserved exclusively for members. The marketing/timeshare presentation was especially frustrating. It was supposed to last 90–120 minutes, but ended up taking over 3 hours. It started deceptively during breakfast and a cart tour, only for staff to say the timer began after those events—even though that’s when the sales pitch actually began. This wasted our entire last morning. We had declined from the beginning, but when we tried to leave due to my mother’s back pain, the agent rudely accused her of faking it. When we stood up to leave, they threatened us with a $400 penalty. Later, we found many online reviews describing similar tactics, calling the membership offers scams that are hard to cancel. To make matters worse, the posters and marketing materials were full of grammatical errors, making everything feel unprofessional. They also had walls lined with “awards” in the marketing room, yet we couldn’t find any trace of these awards online, which added to the sense of dishonesty. Food and drinks were mid-tier—some meals didn’t look fresh, and cocktails were weak with little alcohol. The resort advertised 20+ activities, but only about 3–4 were free, with most requiring payment. The online photos were misleading, likely AI-generated or heavily edited, and didn’t reflect reality. Most of the pictured restaurants and spaces were closed, and no one notifies you until you arrive. Despite being only about 20% full, the hotel still pressured guests into making reservations at mostly empty restaurants, and staff gave attitude if you arrived without one. On checkout day, we were pulled out of the buffet in front of everyone to settle a spa charge—something that could’ve waited until after we finished our meal. It was unnecessarily rude and humiliating. That said, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the cleaning and restaurant staff, especially people like Hector and Aaron. Their kindness and hard work stood out and were the main reason I was able to enjoy any part of my stay. They deserve recognition for doing their best to uphold some sense of hospitality amidst poor leadership. Conclusion: I might consider returning only if the resort is completely renovated, fully transparent, and stops treating non-members like second-class guests. As it stands, it’s hard to enjoy a vacation in a place run by deceptive marketing, unprofessional management, and inconsistent service.

Hacienda Tres Rios Resort is part of SunsetWorld and it is 35-miles south of Cancun City on Hwy. 307, and located in a mangrove swamp. We visited this resort as part of a timeshare promotion and sales presentation, and while we did not say overnight, we toured the outdoor part of the facility (until a heavy downpour began) and had breakfast there. The property is nice and we were told it is SunsetWorld's newest time share marketing location. They have been marketing SunsetWorld's property there for at least nine years, so I don't know how new it is. The presentation was nothing short of entirely awful. They hold all the tricks of deception and unethical marketing. ALL of it is high pressure and it lasted for about 6 hours. In Mexico, one is not able to take advantage of the two hour US time limit on timeshare sales presentations. My take was that the reason why it is so hard sell is that maybe people just don't wish to buy into such an unethical enterprise. The Breakfast Buffet was quite nice, with good food, and eaten in the Hacienda Grill. However, the sales agent attended us at our table and caused us to be unable to enjoy our meal. In fact, except for the restroom, he did not let us out of his sight. The mangroves are quite tall and shelter the resort from all views surrounding it. One can only look up, so the beach is out of view. Being outside is like walking down a corridor. Mangroves clean the air and water and keep the mosquito population down, but I found the grounds to be claustrophobic. Tres Rios is the site of the SunsetWorld's Ethos Gardens, the Farm to Table plan that provides most of the fresh produce served at all the SunsetWorld's Resorts. The heavy downpour prevented us from going out to see them, but the staff is quite proud of this concept. The resort sits on 'Three Rivers', which flow to the sea. We could almost see the outlet through the mangroves. It is possible to kayak these rivers through the resort, but not in the rain. The resort also boasts it's own cenote, a sheltered lake in the mangrove swamp. Swimming and kayaking is possible there. A small crocodile lives in the cenote, which would be enough to keep me out. The water looked murky anyway. We toured a large suite equipped to sleep eight. The is the suite that goes with a $300,000 USD perpetual investment, + annual maintenance fees, time of use fees and other ways to part one from their money. It was the only accommodation we were allowed to look at because that was the level of investment they wanted us to buy into. Phase Two is being developed now, but the sales person didn't want to take his open golf cart out there in the rain. After we were released from the sales meat grinder, we sat in the lobby for a time and waited for the transport vehicle to arrive to take us back to Cancun. Even there, we were approached about buying into the property. The property buildings themselves were nice, with a Mexican Hacienda theme. I did not care for the grounds, and I would never purchase anything under such duress.

We so badly needed a get away to someplace beautiful and relaxing. This was our first trip post covid and Tres Rios did not disappoint. The resort is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!! It is in the town of Playa del Carmen. It is a little bit slower and calmer than the city of Cancun, but not far from Cancun, if you want the bustle. The resort is tropical and luscious. The rooms are spacious, the showers are very nice. Handicapped Accessible. It has 6 different restaurants, Italian, Japanese Tepanyaki, Mexican, Outdoor Grill, Pizza Place and Buffet(for bkft, lunch and dinner). It also has a cute, comfortable coffee desert/sandwich shop. There is a sports bar with TVs with various sports constantly playing. It has a beautiful large, I mean large adult pool and an even larger beautiful family pool, with water slides for all ages. The pools have plenty of shady areas and sunny areas for sun seekers. They bring in nightly entertainment, from live bands, Traditional Indian dancers, karoke nights and dance classes. They also offer Multiple excursions directly from the resort. We took the bicycle tour and visited several cenotes on the property. Isaac our tour guide was so informative and personable. We had so many other positive encounters with the resorts staff. All staff, no matter their position aleays made eye contact, genuinely smiled and told us "Good morning!" or "Good afternoon!" From the beginning, at the front desk, Ivan checked us in, welcomed us and made the start of our stay a very positive one. Our concierge, I dont remember her name but she was beautiful, polite, poised and professional. She offered information to us and made us very comfortable. Our regular waiter at the buffet was named Oscar, and he did a great job even though he kept busy. But hands down our favorite waiter was Jose Alfredo by the family pool. Jose remembered us every day, brought us our favorite drinks, kept us hydrated with water and a good sense of humor and overall showed us good old fashioned customer service. Even though he had a mask on, the smiles he gave us with his eyes were contagious. You absolutely could not have a bad day with his infectious good personality. Jose Alfredo is a definite asset to the resort. Tres Rio's outshines most places we have visited on their customer service! We have been to other beautiful places, maybe had slightly better food and slightly fancier amenities, but none of that matters if the customer servicei is lacking. Tres Rio's will definitely be a destination we would highly recommend and come back to visit!!

Okay so where do we start…||||When you arrive, they do come and help with your bags. ||You then check in & if your room isn’t ready, you wait 4hrs for the room to be ready…”||||The Beach is absolutely trash. There’s a seaweed that stings your skin & it goes from the coast like to about 15ft into the ocean. So don’t think about swimming in the ocean. Unless you become a member there for thousands of dollars. The members only beach was perfectly cleared off. ||||That takes me to the membership. They require you to sit through what they will tell you is a 90 minute presentation. It is more realistically like four hours. ||||But don’t worry there’s an easy way to not have to buy one of their stupid timeshares. All you need to do is ensure them that legally you cannot sign anything locking you into any monthly payment unless you talk with a lawyer and an accountant first. They tried to sell us a timeshare starting at $300,000… their final offer was selling us one for $500. We said no to everything. ||||Although when you do say no to everything, the service they provide, you goes dramatically down. Their sales team is extremely high pressured and they think they’re smart, but they are actually not very smart at all. They’re actually very uneducated. ||||But as long as you continually say no, and tell them, you legally cannot sign anything without showing documentation to a lawyer or to an accountant…they will back off. They will tell you that they will not allow you to take any documentation with you. They will tell you that it is Mexico’s law to not let you take any documentation with you. You then ask them to quote and reference and citation to show you the law…they refuse to do this as well, which means they are a scam and frauds. Their little sales presentation is absolutely the dumbest thing you could ever sit through. ||||Not only is their sales presentation bad. The food is absolutely horrible. Both me and my fiancé got sick on this trip by eating pizza. The alcoholic drinks had little to no alcohol in them unless you become a member and then they give you alcohol. They pretend that they don’t speak English, but they speak English. The staff is absolutely horrible especially Gina at the front desk. She’s the worst of them all. ||||On a ledge outside, our room were stacked up room service dishes, which attracted little rodents. Don’t worry those rodents also would poop in the hallways. These rodents also would steal your food by the pool, which was a very warm pool in a very hot climate. These rodents would also drink from your drinks, and when you complained to the staff, they would shrug their shoulders and walk away. ||||The gym is absolutely not a gym. It is trash. ||||Literally, the best part about this entire vacation was leaving this property.||||Also give them a credit card and then as soon as you leave this property lock that credit card because they will try to charge you for things after you leave. ||||So between the dead bugs, animal feces, animals trying to steal your food and drinks, extremely high pressure sales from very uneducated people, absolute horrible staff, and countless vendor is trying to sell you things on their property…||||I would rather go to jail, then come back to this resort. ||||The only thing I highly recommend is that every single person stay far away from this resort.||||Also, don’t forget that you legally do not have to buy anything from them. If you sit through that sales presentation just tell them that you legally cannot sign any documents without the approval of your lawyer or accountant and they will back off.||||Also, by the way this place is going bankrupt so they will try to sell you anything for any amount of dollar to save their jobs. ||||But again, I will advise you to never ever go here. What they should do is fire, all the staff members, and the management, and tear it down and rebuild. ||||Literally, the worst vacation experience I ever have had…and I’ve been to Haiti. ||||My last warning is to literally never go here! These are the worst kind of people you could imagine. ||||But don’t worry their response to this review will be they will escalate this which they won’t. Or they will address this with management, but they won’t. Or they will address us with the staff, but they won’t. They will say thank you for your concerns, but they aren’t thankful because nothing changes here. They will say thank you for bringing this to our attention, but they absolutely do not care about anybody who comes to their establishment. So watch them comment on this below, but mark my words…this is the worst resort in the...

I should start out by saying we travel a lot for work and vacation. We normally stay in resorts with better known brand names and their level of service is different. We may have different expectations on some of these things. This resort is time share based. There is an all inclusive requirement. We had a one bedroom and were required to pay for four adults and one child even though we were two adults and three children. We were told in advance our unit required four adult all inclusive fees. I’m not sure how four adults could use the unit we stayed in. It consisted of one bedroom with one king size bed and a pull out futon and a second pull out futon in the living room. They were not something two adults would want to sleep on. They were fine for the kids. Upon our arrival our room smelled like mildew. We complained right away. We have two kids with allergies. They said they couldn’t do anything. After more complaining they showed us another room with the exact same issues. They promised to bring an air purifier and that never arrived during our full one week stay. They have two pools, one for adults only with about 25 umbrellas. Another pool is for families. This pool is right against the beach with 6 umbrellas for about 200 people. The sun is blaring all day. There are palm trees for some shade, but not everywhere. With 3 very fair children we set our alarm and went to get seats by an umbrella to provide some relief for our children. We left our spot to go get breakfast and one of the workers took our umbrella and gave it to another family who was already in the shade. Of course after going through all this trouble to sit in a shaded spot I said something. This gentlemen told me he spoke to a manager and an umbrella will be coming. After An hour I went to speak to the manager myself. Who told me they sent someone out to go buy more. There was a restaurant with not one single person eating in it for hours and 8 umbrellas. A few hours later a manager did arrive with an umbrella and apologies. The pool side service at the family pool is friendly, but there is only one or two servers for a few hundred people. Cups, used towels and food end up being left around. There is a bar but the wait is long. They do not have food service by the pool. There is a restaurant by the adult pool. They have a food stand by the family pool with hamburgers and hotdogs. The seagulls by the pool were very aggressive the first few days. They would swoop down and take food off a plate sitting right next to you. Most of the hotels in the area use hawks to keep them away. I did notice a few days in there were a bunch of hawks hovering above. Seagulls appeared to move on after that. The beach has a ton of sea weed on the sand and in the water and is unswimmable. It’s so bad when you wade out you fall into knee high muck. There is a slightly more swimmable beach over a bridge that is completely empty. They do have people picking the sea weed up every time but it seems to be an effort in futility. There is tons of it. This is not unique to this resort. We’ve stayed in the area before with similar beach conditions. The river that empties out into the ocean looks pretty. It’s the same river you snorkel and kayak on. In certain spots there is a sulfur smell. It’s that way at certain spots along the river and where the river empties into the ocean. I was told it is how the mangroves smell naturally. I suspect it has something to do with how this resort, and most resorts in the area, manage their sewage. My guess is they dump the water into the mangroves, it filters into the river and out to the ocean. I only hope it’s treated before it gets dumped. This is not unique to this resort. It’s apparently a common way to handle sewage water in the area. The restaurant has friendly service and ok food. There were the usual chicken nuggets, hot dog, burgers, etc for the kids. We enjoyed the Mexican restaurant the most. It took a bit of time to get our food but it...

so I am on my second day of staying here and I already got so much to say. Here’s my take on about this resort and if you are coming, please read this. Also, take dukarol for the food or else it might not be a good stay for you.

Cons First off, it’s got a few rules and it’s pretty strict. If you do visit the portobello restaurant you need to follow a tight dress code. And they will ask for your room number a lot of times or scan your wristband. I’m pretty sure it’s because of locals taking bracelets and sneaking in so if you lose yours it’s $200 American to replace it.

Next off, I went over Christmas and the pools were freezing. Amazing, but freezing. This lead to the hot tubs being packed most of the time but you can still get a spot in it.

Following the pool, the ocean was pretty mucky and the sand was black. If you went pretty far, you start to notice you sink about a foot so you stay close to the shores.

Lastly, the service is great but there were still some problems. We had a broken handle and a roof leak in our washroom but only the roof has been fixed so far. (Also we didn’t really ask about the handle so that’s why). We also used the pull out couches and asked twice for the sheets and stuff but that wasn’t a big problem either.

This wasn’t a resort issue but we had pretty bad weather but nothing terrible.

Pros First off, it’s beautiful. You have a river flowing throughout the resort and the trees are amazing and we didn’t have any bad bug issues which allowed us to relax even more. The lobby was great and the beaches and pools were kept clean.

Next is the resort itself. There is 2 big pools that we mainly got to ourselves partly because it was freezing but still great. Same with the ocean but that was mucky as well. The gym was a good size to work out in and they had a nice coffee shop and a sports bar to hang out in if you need to stay inside. The pizza bar was delicious, but you might want to order and come back in 20 mins if there are a few people. There is a mini golf course(which was pretty hard to meet the par) and two beach volleyball spots. There was a soccer net and a pool volleyball net and the only thing that was popular and busy was one volleyball net.

Next, which I think was the best, was the peace. We would wake up at 8:30 go to the buffet at 9(only 1 buffet sadly but like 6 restaurants that you done even have to book to get in) and there was a good deal of seats left. We walked past it again at 10:15 and it still want that busy. Don’t worry about finding a pool chair, as they are great chairs and you can come at 9:30 and find them all empty basically. Same goes for the ocean, the kabanas are great to relax in and read a book or there is a section with like 100 beach chairs that I always find empty. This place is the place to go if you want to be stress free for a week and relax the whole time and not worry about finding a chair or getting a towel.

For the service, it’s fantastic. We had some issues the first night but they were resolved and we didn’t have issues going forward. Everyone is friendly to us and they always do a good job. Maids make a animal out of the towels and it’s always great to come back to a dinosaur on your bed. If hey had to improve on something, it would be understanding English a little better for the maids and front desk and the speed they work at.

The food is great everywhere on the resort. I recommend going to a restaurant for dinner but that’s it.

Last I can think of is the hotel room. We got a suite and we are glad we got it. The showers are gigantic, beds are comfy and you have a lot of space in our room. Personally we didn’t need a bath tub in the main room but why not. They have robes in the closet and stocked fridges if you like staying in the room and need a drink.

I know this list is pretty long and I didn’t include the stuff like kayaking and the cenote but we haven’t done it yet. I just wanted to write this because it’s been one of the best vacations I’ve ever...
