I was fortunate enough to stay at the Matea Inn.. it's a slightly strange place.. strange in a good way though!||||The rooms are wonderfully appointed.. apart from my TV would just not work properly.. even with the excellent assistance from the 'front' desk.. i write it like that as there is not a front desk to speak of.. there is a lovely outside lounge instead! that is where you check in.. I am not sure how wheelchair access would work to get to the rooms.. maybe I missed that bit.. ||||The rooms are an eclectic mix, an obvious nod towards five star european properties.. It feels very bling! .. no pool unfortunetly.. and not many rooms.. ||||The staff are wonderful.. although not all speaking english.. everything can be solved with a smile and google translate though right?||||This is a family owned place and is very friendly and safe indeed.. no room service that i could see and the snacks were from costco, it would have been nice to have had a small taster of local snacks perhaps?||||Now the setting.. bizarre? I think so.. it's a complex off the road.. that has shops and eateries.. excellent food by the way! and also what I was told to be is the only italian icecream store in the whole of Mexico!! fantastic icecream by the way!||||The complex has been done very well although the shops could do with updating their stock, perhaps also offering a general store for guests? not all the places seemed to open.. although they really have thought of pretty much everything!||||It is definitely worth a visit.. I would stay again for sure.. and would recommend it to anyone.. ||||Just wish they had a pool! (or maybe a space for hotel guests to sit outside? ).. That would take this to an excellent rating..||||I have to mention it once more... great staff.....
Read moreMany aspects are great: huge rooms, kind and professional staff, comfortable beds, a welcome cocktail, delicious breakfast, discount at the hotel restaurant for dinner, and a parting gift of sun-dried tomatoes. But so many other aspects are weird, and worth mentioning: the hotel is in a partially developed shopping mall. It is filled with approximately 100 giant teddy bears, including a room where several dozen sit in chairs as though they are Senators in the Teddy Bear Senate. It creeped me out: the more giant teddy bears you see, the more you start to wonder if/when they come alive, or if they are former guests who wrote a slightly critical review on Trip Advisor and got turned into bears by a wizard. There's nowhere to park, and you have to walk towards what seems like a loading dock to access the pool, which had a larger-than-usual quantity of dead insects. The hotel does not actually have a way to enjoy the thermal waters for which Ixtapan de la Sal was famous, and in order to have a nice view with your breakfast, you have to drive 5 minutes: the alternative would be breakfast in the hotel restaurant, where giant teddy bears keep giant empty beer steins company beneath enormous expressionist paintings of naked women striking mysterious poses that appear simultaneously dark and empowering. I listed "huge rooms" as an advantage, but really, the rooms are weirdly large: you could hold a square dance in them. You could get exercise by doing laps around your room (I did). If you like repeatedly asking yourself "But wait, WHY?" and you appreciate a comfortable bed and you don't mind possibly turning into a giant teddy bear, certainly...
