Hôtel Jnane La Kasbah — Hotel in caïdat d'Arab Sebbah Ziz قيادة عرب صباح زيز

We stayed at the Jnane La Kasbha hotel for two nights in May 2014 having seen the great reviews. The hotel is situated approx. two kilometres north of Erfoud on the N13 to Ar-Rachidia and is easy to find. The safe car park is to the right of the reception. However, the reception is dark and dismal and at first the hotel didn't seem to recognise our on-line booking. The rooms are located around a central pool which has discoloured tiles and a brown rim.||The first room we were shown was full of flies but quickly we were shown another nearby and the porter found us a bedside light to read by. We ate a good meal by the poolside and the service was fine. On our return to our room we found several cockroaches in the toilet, the bathroom and our bedroom. In the morning we found that there were others on the ceiling and one was crushed in the bed.||The hotel's staff were always very pleasant and the breakfast was also good. At dinner next day we were moved to the snack bar with a large tour group where the light was so dim that the staff removed the lampshades to provide adequate illumination. In the morning we arrived at breakfast after the tour group had departed to find that the flies had returned to consume the remains of their breakfast which hadn't been cleared away.||This is a relatively new hotel built in a traditional style. Unfortunately our experience was that the staff tried their very best to please but the maintenance, fumigation and general running of the hotel were not managed properly, hence the low rating.||P.S. We spent New Year's Eve here, and found it met our needs. We don't travel with high expectations or expensive needs so everything came together very nicely. The grounds are beautiful and nicely lighted (even with frost on the palm trees)! When we arrived, they had turned the heat on in the hotel room which are located on two floors in a building behind the main arrival area (which is dark, but also Moroccan and designed to replicate the courtyard feel of a riad). We met the owner who was very proud of his use of design for the hotel. There are only 14 rooms, I think, so one thing to consider is how important the use of palms, greens and land were in his design; I thought it was much larger until he told me his deliberate plan to make the grounds beautiful, "like an oasis". There is a separate lounge/bar. The dining area has a fireplace that roars in the winter. A barley and bean soup was delicious. A large fruit plate was served for dessert. Wow! Every traveler to Morocco must book this hotel and camel ride to experience the Saharan Desert.||||My friend and I stayed in this hotel as part of a small, English speaking group tour. The hotel appears only accessible by 4X4 Jeep. Accommodations are very comfortable tents, with electricity and running water. Staff was very warm (friendliest we had in Morocco), and served us a large tagine for dinner. After dinner, the staff invited us to dance, even playing drums and singing Berber songs for guests.||||You cannot miss the stars in the night sky, untouched by surrounding light pollution (because Merzouga is so remote). We could see Orion's belt and several other constellations.||||The hotel employs local Berber to escort guests on camel rides to watch sunrise and sunset over the Erg Chebbi dunes. Our guides were warm, friendly, and went the extra mile writing our names in Arabic in the sand. They took many pictures for us and seemed really good with our cameras.
