Hotel Kasbah Azalay — Hotel in caïdat de M'Hamid

After enjoying the Atlas Mountains and climbing Mount Toubkal, we travelled east to Ait ben Haddou, and decided that the Sahara should be next on the list of our 3 week driving tour, searching for Morocco adventure. A quick look at Trip Advisor helped us to easily select Hotel Kasbah Azalay. The town of M'Hamid is rustic at best, and steeped in the traditions of an ancient Morocco that time seems to have left alone - which adds all the more to the charm of following the ancient caravan trails, and to seek out the magical Sahara. With a decent iPhone map, we found Azalay reasonable easily, and when we drove up, we were pleased with our selection. ||Within minutes of arriving, we were easily checked in, taken to our rooms, and then went back to the check in to discuss a 4 wheel tour to the Sahara. They immediately organized a tour to leave at 1:30pm in the afternoon the next day, to travel 60kms into the desert to find the spectacular Sahara dunes. The hotel catered to our evening meal, which was a wonderful tangine, and the morning meal was equally appealing. During our first evening, we were warmly greeted by the Hotel's owner, Julian Vallecamp (sp?) and some his friends who were there for a month, doing walks in the desert and on weight loss programs. Julian was a charming gentleman, formerly fro Barcelona, who had brought a Spanish influence to both the construction, and the meals. The food was wonderful! We met some of Julian's friends, and were treated to an amazing evening of storytelling, and drinking too much wine and beer. (We drank, but they were fasting!)||Our tour the next day, which was about 140 Euros, and split 3 ways, was probably the highlight of the trip. We arrived at the dunes, stayed till sundown, and travelled back under the stars. I wish we had slept under the stars it was so amazing. Das neue Kasbah Azalay-Hotel ist ein mittelgroßes Hotel im traditionellen Kasbah-Stil, das sehr komfortabel ausgestattet ist und alle Annehmlichkeiten eines modernen Hotels bietet. Bei den Zimmern handelt es sich um große und schön eingerichtete Juniorsuiten, mit Schreibtisch, Sofa und Fernseher (mit Deutscher Welle auf Englisch). Vor der Tür befand sich bei uns ein Tisch mit zwei Stühlen, etwas weiter gab es eine möblierte Loggia, so dass man auch im Freien sitzen kann. Die einfach eingerichtete Bar verfügt über eine Terrasse. Das Restaurant ist zwar auch traditionell eingerichtet, aber ein wenig grell angestrichen. Es hat leider keinen Außenbereich, so dass nur drinnen gegessen werden kann. Das Essen ist o.k., erreicht aber nicht den sonstigen Standard des Hotels. Wlan gibt es nur in der Bar und der Rezeption. ||Mhamid liegt am Ende der geteerten Fernstraße und ist ein altes Oasendorf mit einem schönen alten Stadtkern aus Lehmbauten. Der neue Teil ist dagegen nicht sehr einladend. Es ist halt ein armes Dorf und hat nichts zu bieten, schon gleich gar keine Einkaufsmöglichkeiten. Dafür muss man schon nach Zagora zurückfahren. Wir haben in der Kasbah Azalay auf unserem Weg zu einer Tour in ein Wüstencamp für zwei Nächte übernachtet und einen ganzen Tag in der Anlage verbracht, die über einen großen Hof mit zahlreichen Palmen, allerdings leider nur über einen Innenpool in einer relativ dunklen, wenn auch schön gestalteten Halle verfügt. Wir waren Ende September die einzigen Gäste des Hotels, weil die Saison erst im Oktober beginnt. Es war tatsächlich auch noch sehr heiß, so dass man ohne Auto nichts unternehmen konnte. Fazit: Für ein oder zwei Nächte bietet das Hotel viel Komfort zu einem annehmbaren Preis und länger bleiben wahrscheinlich nur sehr wenige Gäste. ||Der Service ist sehr freundlich, aber lediglich der Manager und einer der Mitarbeiter verstehen etwas Englisch, so dass die Verständigung nicht immer einfach ist. We stayed at this hotel for one night while we were on a desert trek . Really nice hotel - it’s huge !!! ||The room were very big - king sized bed - a little on the hard side tho. Really good air con in the room. Bathroom was huge - big shower with a hand held. Even 2 sinks in the bathroom !||Grounds were huge and beautiful . Pool was HUGE but indoors due to the proximity of the sand dunes. We never actually swam in it but it looked very nice.||Dinner and breakfast was very good - we had dinner outside and breakfast in the dining area. ||For sure would recommend this place - very nice and staff were all so nice and eager to help...
