Accessibility||Access to Dar Itrane is via paved but challenging mountain roads - many hair pin bends, narrow, steep drops.||Adjacent parking.||High door sill. Some ground floor rooms.||No lift, steep stairs||||Services/Activities||Dar Itrane is a venue primarily for trekkers which could also suit keen photographers, birdwatchers and those just wishing for a remote place to stay. If you do not fall into these categories you may find there is simply nothing for you here.||Dar Itrane is perhaps best suited to small groups with their own leader. ||||Descriptions of local walks are available but directions are not easy to follow, no maps provided and timings may have been done by a mule rider. Strong walkers should add 2 hours+ to all timings over 2 hours. Paths are not waymarked. ||Dar Itrane will organise mules, donkeys and local guides on request but I have no experience of how easy this is.||||Food||Simple but plentiful Moroccan. Lunch and dinner must be booked in advance. Picnics provided if booked the night before. Vegetarians catered for after a fashion but you may be expected to remove your vegetables from a dish containing meat. Meals are served at communal tables which may or may not work for you depending on your and your fellow diners language and social skills. No alcohol served.||||The hotel||Rooms are large, very plain, clean, comfortable for sleeping in but not for spending large amounts of time in. Some pleasant if austere outdoor terraces with mountain views. Dar Itrane is very much a trekking base rather than a destination in...
Read moreI spent 2 nights in August, 2022 at Ecolodge Dar Itrane while attending a friend's wedding. The lodge was a wonderful example of old Moroccan architecture with private rooms, thick walls, balconies on each floor, a large terrace, and a view of part of a traditional Berber village and the Atlas Mountains. The "public" walls were covered with colorful Berber artifacts and there were handwoven Berber rugs under foot.
My splendid room was large, with a comfortable bed, a small sitting area, a traditional Moroccan shower, closet space, and electrical outlets next to the bed for my CPAP machine and electrical appliances. The entirety of the premises was clean with everything in working order.
The staff was friendly and helpful. The day after I arrived, I stayed in bed most of the day, having suffered from the heat on a trip to the "low country" with my friends. I was particularly impressed that the staff checked on me twice that day to make sure I was well. As a senior citizen traveling alone, it was comforting to know the staff was watching out for me.
The only meal I ate at the lodge was breakfast, the usual array of egg, cheese, bread, jams, honey and fruit, all fresh and satisfying. The fresh air and view from the terrace added to my enjoyment.
Oh, yes, I do hope to return to Ait Bergaumez, the Happy Valley, in the future and will definitely keep this accommodation in minh for...
Read moreThe High Atlas Mountains were nice. During check in we were offered mint tea, which was good. Whet on a walk, played soccer with some of the local teenagers. Cool experience.||This place can not be called a hotel, it's more like a scaled down dude ranch, without the associated services. No AC, limit in the service, dinner was late. I noticed a piece of bread drop to the floor during our meal, the attendant just picked it up and placed it in the basket with the other food. Got sick when I was there, but to be fair, it probably was not anything from Dar Itrane. While I was sick, I was in bed, looking at the ceiling, watching the bugs crawling up there. I turned out the light, then I heard something hit the pillow, turned on the light, but could not find the bug. But others were there to take it's place. ||On the positive, mint tea was nice, couscous was great, dinner was fine.||Service was fine if you've been to France and know what to expect. Pleasant, slightly rude, but not mean.||The biggest thing to remember, the price of this place is far - far in excess of the quality of the hotel and service. For the same price you can get a top notch Riad in Marrakesh. Take a day trip to the mountains, and enjoy your stay at...
