Since this hotel was located along the river, we had high hopes when we arrived in time to see a beautiful sunset over the river. Then we were shown to room 405 - on the top floor and with a sideways view of the river through very dirty windows and with furniture you might see in Holiday Inn - if it had been trashed by previous occupants - and totally missing the glass door on the shower. We asked to look at other rooms and were shown one on the third floor with a view of the dirt lot in back (rather than have the windows facing the river in sleeping rooms, they were in a long, airless hallway that most rooms opened onto). The room we saw on the second floor opened onto a shared terrace, that was covered with bird poop and not a something we wanted to use or look at. So, we stayed in 405.||||Breakfast was limited and mediocre. The bar in the lobby had a very limited selection and no wine by the glass. The lobby itself seemed like it was furnished to process large tour groups with rows of coaches and chairs. The unfortunate thing is that this could be a nice hotel; the rooms themselves have high ceilings and, with a bit of care and paint, could be much nicer. As it is, there is dirt on the ceilings and walls, the floor was scratched, and it didn't feel especially clean and it certainly wasn't a room or hotel we wanted to...
Read moreMy wife and I spent four nights at The Strand in August while we toured the sights of Mawlamyaing. Our room was very spacious, clean, air conditioned with free (not so good) WiFi. Better to buy a Tourist Sim than depend on local WiFi! More importantly the beds were comfortable.||Food was not exactly gourmet but OK. Breakfast was eggs and ham, fruit, toast and jam plus option of Asian foods. Dinner was selected from a large menu which was mainly Asian dishes. Must have been the off season as we were the only guests for 3 out of the 4 days. Staff were friendly and pleasant and went out of their way to assist. On our last day my wife fell outside the Hotel and broke her wrist. The Manager and his staff immediately responded and took us to a nearby Orthopaedic Clinic. They were very attentive and concerned.||Previous reviews have commented the hotel is built round the wrong way, which is true, but so what! Your don't go to Mawlamyaing to sit in your room and admire the view! Plenty to see in Mawlamyaing so Hotel is somewhere to eat and sleep. The Strand does that quite well considering...
Read moreThis is a very basic hotel. Although large, it has no amenities whatsoever for its guests. As other reviewers have noted, the architect must have been crazy to orient the hotel away from the river view and instead giving guests views over a laundry or just rooftops (and over a noisy street). The rooms are large, with wooden floors. The curtains are so flimsy and thin that I woke at dawn each day, disturbed by the sunlight. There are virtually no electric sockets for charging equipment - I had to crawl on the floor to charge my camera. There is no safety box (this was the only hotel we experienced in the whole of Myanmar which did not offer in-room security boxes). The "Thanlyin Bridge view" bar has no view of anything and is a gloomy dark place to sit next to the reception area. The internet system is ridiculous - it's necessary to have a new access code almost every time you log on. Finally - the breakfast. Watered-down juice, tasteless fruit (how is this possible in a country bursting with delicious fruit?) and an absolutely inedible omelette (powdered...
