I am writing in English just in case some foreign visitors are interested in staying in this unique bed and breakfast. ;)||||As apposed to many castle hotels who offer rooms and where you end up in a near building or the carriage house, most of the rooms in this bed and breakfast are in the castle itself. Another plus is that they are rooms with a theme. Not the garish kind, but very tasteful, based on art- or historic styles. If you book through their own website you can choose the room you want. I did it that way because through other lager booking sites one can only book a certain type of room but not choose a particular one. However with my booking it turned out that the system was faulty and had only calculated one breakfast. When I confirmed arrival time as requested the owner explained that to me. The fault was not of the kind that I suddenly had to pay more then expected since the total was still the one I saw when booking, but somewhere between booking and the finalization the program had lowered the price (charging only one breakfast) ||||When arriving on the time we had indicated it was not clear were we had to announce our arrival. We first rang the bell at the castle but when that did not work out and we saw light at the carriage house we knocked there. The host was there and directed us to the library/salon of the castle and offered us coffee or tea while we waited for the hostess to arrive. (she was the one who normally received guests) We had to wait for about 20 minutes. The lady graciously brought us to our room en showed were everything was. We stayed in the van haeften room, which was much more spacious then expected. The toilet and separate bathroom were private (as is not always with other castles) but across the hall (but we knew that in advance since I had asked, so it was not a problem) ||||Unfortunately we stayed only 1 night and it rained so we did not have the opportunity to see the gardens or test the outside swimming pool. But the castle and it public spaces were clean and stylish. One could sit in the library and read and drink coffee or tea, or go to the simple bar in the cellar and write down what one drank (that would be added to the bill). We did not do either since our dinner in the nearest village took long and we were very tired so we went to bed early. ||||The breakfast the next morning was in the cellar of the castle. I must admit that I have an extremely sensitive nose (the kind that is handy if one smells a gas leak no one else has noticed but is a nuisance in most other cases) and the lower levels of the castle had, for me, a musty smell (that is probably not to be helped with older buildings) The breakfast was set up in a small buffet (there were more guests so I don’t know if that is also done with less guests) The fruit, buns and cold cuts were luxurious (not the cheap kind) but present in low amounts (probably to keep things fresh and they were to be refilled when needed ) But I unfortunately could not find anything sweet anywhere (no jam, peanutbutter, chocolate sprinkles etc) ||||So in all we had a very good stay and can really recommend this unique bed...
Read moreStaying a night at the Ophemert Castle is a special experience. The Castle is nicely located on it's own grounds in the midst on the Betuwe, a typical Dutch landscape dominated by the big slow flowing rivers of the the Rhine, Waal and Maas, lined with fruit growing trees. We received a heartly welcome by the baron and the baroness Van Dedem, who live permanently on the estate and run this B&B. We stayed in the Red Room, Van Haeften room, one of the several rooms available at this big 17th century built manorhouse. Entering the main lobby you will find the lounge, library and main reception rooms, an ideal venue for larger meetings. We really enjoyed our room which was still left in an original state. All amenities are at hand. Our toilet and bath were opposite on the corridor. For the convenience of the guests there are several bathrooms. There are also rooms which have their own shower/bath inside the room. The breakfast was extensive and very good. This is an ideal location for a family party. Really...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed for one night in late June while exploring the Dutch countryside. The owners were very welcoming. We were the only guests that evening, so got our choice of rooms. All were beautiful. We walked around the well-landscaped grounds, which included a moat and garden. The owner offered to take the cover off the pool, but it was a bit rainy so we declined. She recommended a fantastic French restaurant a short drive away where we had dinner. The next morning we went to the breakfast room for the most amazing spread of food we had ever encountered – all prepared for just the two of us. The castle is a good base for exploring the scenic Waal River region. If we had more time, we would have rented bikes. I would recommend this very reasonably-priced castle stay to anyone who can get to the area without public...
