Glenburn Coastal Retreat — Hotel in Kaikōura

This review was from previous year of 2022. This is based on our experience we had with the owner. Me and my now fiancé traveled down south and booked this place 2 months in advance as I had planned a proposal at this location on New Year’s Day 2022. We arrived on check in 2pm that and were greeted with locked up accomodation and no signs to enter inside our lodge. I contacted the man in charge and he told me our card declined so that it was no longer feasible to stay. Our card details were correct and our balance was in good sort to proceed the payment. He said he emailed me which he did 2 hours prior to us arriving warning me this has occurred. I had told him we had just driven 4 hours from hour location prior and haven’t been able to check email. I explained to him the importance of the day and said I was happy to drive to his location and give him cash or have him retry the same card or another and he flat refused and had no sympathy which I found the response unprofessional and strange. We presumed that someone had called and wanted the lodge for longer period of time as we only had the one night booking and that was more appetising for him being New Year’s Day. So to collaborate the info. I guess on a technicality he was correct as he did email, but a phone call could have been made instead as it was made clear of our situation and I felt the whole communication provided was poor and the conversation had once we arrived was very distasteful. So we had to find another place to stay which was nice enough for a proposal and that happend to be another 4 hours away in Nelson / Motueka! Luckily it was daylight saving so by arrival to new destination I made the proposal and it went well! But this still plays on my mind hence the late bad review. As of February, 2024, Glenburn Coastal Retreat has twenty-two perfect (5) reviews on Trip Advisor and ranks 10 of 22 B & Bs in Kaikoura. That doesn’t seem possible. Maybe that’s because there are only three high quality, self-contained units and they don’t get enough ratings from their satisfied guests. Regardless, Glenburn is a sanctuary in paradise only a few km outside of Kaikoura. The unobstructed water, mountain and stunning landscape view makes the property a must stay. After I read the 22 stellar reviews, I knew Glenburn would be special and it exceeded my expectations. ||The bathroom has a marble tile rain shower, stand-alone bathtub, double sinks/vanity, heated floor & towel bar and a view. Two satellite flat screen TVs, fast WiFi and a fireplace highlight the living room that can be separated from the very comfy king bed with a view of the ocean. The kitchen has everything that is needed; including a two-burner gas stove, dishwasher, apartment sized refrigerator and all the cooking utensils. There is even a full-sized washer and dryer and a grill for your barbie! ||Hands down Glenburn Coastal Retreat should be the #1 rated lodging in Kaikoura because of the location, high quality construction of the cottages, all the amenities, value for cost and the caring on-site...
