Awesome spot, with picnic tables to pull over and rest. The views are spectacular. The baby seals were playing in a reef. Seal pups should be left undisturbed, they are using a lot of precious calories if they are chased or scared into the water. They don't have much body fat on them. They are at there most vulnerable and less than half will survive.

Quieter than many of the other rest areas we passed whilst travelling North from Kaikoura. And better for it! There's a great memorial to the whakapapa of Tuteurutira. It's also a key breeding area for fur seals with lots of them lazing in the rocky shoreline at the oceans edge.

One of many places to look at the seals. Several in a row . Easier to turn in going south. Interesting mihi and pou. Seals of all ages taking a rest in mid October. Good place for photo taking.

It's a great place to visit while traveling the coast. Lots of parking and some parks are for busses too. The car parks are just off SH1 so it's quite safe. The area was landscaped during the north Canterbury earthquake rebuild. There are short walks so you can see the wildlife which includes seals. We saw adult and baby seals. A must see if you have 15...
