Skylark Lodge — Hotel in Kaikohe-Hokianga Community

From it’s elevated hilltop location, Skylark Lodge has spectacular, panoramic easterly views across the Waimate Valley that includes Paihia, The Bay Of Islands and the hills near Russell. Watching the sun rise across this beautiful vista from your bed in the morning is the perfect start to any day.

The big sky and the lack of light pollution also makes for the starriest nights that we saw anywhere in our NZ trip. To add to the atmosphere, the stars are accompanied by the plaintive nightly call of the resident Morepork who lives nearby in the woods and the occasional shriek of a Kiwi - neither of which were seen but were certainly heard!

The accommodation is stylish, modern and perfectly appointed with a great kitchen and all mod cons as well as the comfiest bed in Northland! The bathroom is luxurious and it’s all spotlessly clean.

Daryl and Karen are friendly, generous and helpful hosts who go out of their way to make you feel welcome and give great advice about local places to visit. Always approachable, they live onsite near the lodge but are respectful of guest’s privacy.

Skylark Lodge is really well situated to explore the delights of the area with Kerikeri 10 minutes away by car, Paihia about 30 mins & Manganoui (the gateway to the Karikari Peninsula) about 45 mins. The drive to the impressive Hokianga harbour on the west coast is stunning and worth doing as it combines well with a trip to Tāne Mahuta.

Right from the moment we stepped into this property, we knew that the choice we made was the right one. The beautiful landscaping, the enchanting native foliage accompanied by tastefully furnished interiors made it all worthwhile for our weekend getaway. Nothing seemed compromised in what is to be offered. We had the good fortune of seeing not once but twice, a mother turkey and her entourage of chicks in tow at the compound. We loved every minute of our short stay in this amazing sanctuary with privacy at its best. Daryl and Karen are awesome hosts too. Highly recommended....
