Didnt know this place existed and I've lived in Rotorua all my life and 90% of us were the same. Attended 80th birthday there were over 60 of us in our group. Amazing facilities and would highly recommend. Lots of other camping groups too. DOC need to up their game though. As appreciative kiwis and wishing for more of these secluded and beautiful spots we were all keen to pay our fees. Sign said pay at the cabin, the cabin was vacant, honesty box smashed and no one around to collect fees est DOC missed out on approx $1500 that weekend which is really sad as they need this money to maintain these wonderful places. Read moreA simple campsite with lots of space, although we couldn't get a lakefront spot (early Jan). The campsite is 20 minutes down a rural road and there is no civilisation nearby, so make sure you stop for food and water before arriving.
There were lots of toilets, though some were nicer than others. The water taps (non-potable) tend to run out around 11am as everyone uses it up. There was a hut for a solar shower and a shelter with tables.
The lake heats up a bit during the day and there's a barge you can swim out to. Definitely a good place to kayak and paddle board but no place to hire...
