Read moreHORROR HOUSE for animals, but a nice place to say if you can overlook that (which I couldn't). We stayed here for several days and the first thing you notice driving in is the hordes of rabbits living on the land. While it seems nice at first, there is literally a HORDE and there are so many that it is a road hazard each tim you drive in, and my guess is they peel up dead rabbits from their road at least once a week. Plus these rabbits are non-native species in NZ and ecological nightmares and this place doesn't seem to be doing anything to control them. But worse than that, the place has quite a few bird species caged outside. I think they think this gives guests something "cool" to look at. But these birds have terrible enclosures and the birds are stressed out of their mind. My job back at home is to evaluate the welfare of animals so this isn't just my opinion, this is based on an understanding of what the enclosures SHOULD have and animal behavior. Most of the birds have no place to hide. Some have hide boxes in their enclosures which are falling apart. The peacocks (oddly caged) are WAY too crowded, the bars are dangerously far apart leading to possibly injury, and they have ZERO place to hide and they were clearly super stressed. None of the cages had ANY enrichment despite the fact that there were lots of highly intelligent species that really need something to do in order to not go stir crazy. Plus jamming 3 males and one female peacock in a cage with nowhere for her to go in Spring means she's probably getting forcibly mated multiple times a day whether she wants it or not. The species are not native to NZ and are not in their temperature zones so they are probably VERY uncomfortable and like I said, they have no areas to go in their enclosures to get away from weather. Despite the rooms being nice and the staff being nice, I couldn't shake being comfortable in my room while these birds were needlessly being contained outside in a cold, rained on, stressed state. The confined birds offer NO benefit to this otherwise nice place and I highly recommend the owners consider rehoming them to people that can take care of them properly. If animal welfare doesn't matter to you, then by all means, this is a comfortable place to stay. But if it does matter, there are LOTS of other places in the Rotarua area I'd rather you give...
Read moreRecently visited Hana lodge for the second time. It’s a beautiful location with gorgeous grounds. The pool, sauna and spa are so well taken care of. We took our kids for this trip and booked room 5 which opens up onto the pool. We did specifically choose this room because of the pool and the kids loved it! Absolute madness the pool isn’t heated though, the kids didn’t mind but I wish I’d realised that before booking, we previously stayed in winter. It really is too cold to be enjoyed. It was a shame the carpet had a large bleach stain which was then covered in an awful little rug we kept tripping over. The shower in the room could also use a deep clean as it has mould in the grout. I had hoped by this trip the bathroom in this room would have been renovated like the others in the hotel but it remains in its 1990’s glory. The hinges on the door to the bathroom are so squeaky that anyone sleeping gets woken up for a late bathroom trip. These things do matter when you spend the amount of money we spent to stay per night. Breakfast was nice. I preferred the little buffet set up that you had before for the continental breakfast. I was also disappointed in the options for our kids who have coeliac disease. We have stayed at a lot of different places over this school holidays who have gone out of their way to provide equal and safe options for them instead of just removing what they can’t eat. One other thing that is so small but insane when you consider this is a 5 star property, was one day they ran out of soy milk, totally fine that happens. But the next day it hadn’t been replenished. If I knew it wouldn’t get replenished I would have picked up some in town myself. Same for the pool table missing chalk, one of the cleaners said I don’t think there is chalk. If you know something is missing replace it. So overall we had a nice time but considering the cost of staying and the little details that were missing we will choose somewhere else next time. We did absolutely love the addition of the...
