What a pity.|For over NZ$200.00 a night we expected amazing.|We did not even get compliant.||Such a glorious heritage site with in a very special location with amazing natural facilities to utilize.|It looks like it is now owned by an absentee owner who just simply does not care.|The buildings need some serious maintenance.|Cleaning is minimal, everything feels greasy and sticky. Nothing matches and items are clearly domestic and cheap.||The decor is... well a crime to interior decorating.|Christmas decorations still up from 4 months ago.|Tacky tat and low class 'words on walls' Love, Live laugh .....|Fairy lights and plastic flowers reminiscent of a two dollar shop in Phuket.|Yet you can't see or truly enjoy the heritage of the building. Very little shows you that you are in Aotearoa NZ.|We were offered a chalet, and for over NZ $200 a night we felt really ripped off|We should have got an Air BnB nearby.|One expects a lot for $200.|No kitchenette yet a large fridge suspended above the floor under the television which is on a shelf situated at 2 metres above the floor ?|Domestic grade furniture which will never withstand commercial requirements.|1 chair, yet the chalet sleeps 3.|No extra blankets.|Scant space to hang one towel yet alone three. They desperately need heated towel trails.|Vinyl flooring pulling away from the walls. Paint needs a refresh, outside needs a jolly good clean/waterblast, windows not cleaned on inside or out.|Fraying carpets, old floor mats, windows without latches they didn't close at all.|But worst of all no smoke alarm in the room- so not even in compliance with legal regulations.|We later saw one domestic grade alarm which had been taken down in a cupboard with a kmart battery attached.||Staff not really ready for the job, underpaid and overworked.|This place is seriously understaffed. One group had to clear their own plates after lunch and dinner.|Looking onto the kitchen, it is also filthy.|Food is at best late 1990's and over priced, though the chef knows how to cook a good steak.|The staff lack basic hospitality skills and deserve more training; a professional tidy uniform would also be nice. Most people don't expect to be served by a person in a tracksuit at over $200 a night.|There is nowhere for people to sit and chat after 9pm, they are directed by the manager that the hotel space is now 'closed' and to go back to their rooms.|So not ideal for groups.|No information about when meal times are and there is no information int he rooms at all about anything.|There is a sense that guests are an inconvenience.||What the place needs is an owner that cares, it reeks of money not being spent ,of a bare minimum effort.|A manager who checks that rooms are to standard, and legally safe.|A caring owner with a sense of pride could bring this location back to the status it deserves, with a focus on making a true NZ experience.|The narrative and story of the hotel is currently lost.|When asked about the history of the hotel we were handed a brochure about weddings ?|Here is a calm glorious site ripe with potential.|At this stage it falls well below 2.5 stars||Would advise my friends to visit, have a beer in the biker bar attached but not to...
Read moreThis place has so much potential and falls terribly short. A historic building in a beautiful setting. The hot pools themselves are lovely and in a great spot. It’s a bit of a walk down to them (for anyone elderly) and the changing room isn’t impressive but serves a purpose. I’m not sure I’ve sat in a more tranquil setting in NZ with native bush and birds surrounding it.
If your looking at this venue for accomodation, keep looking. We stayed in the chalets and I don’t suggest anyone paying anywhere over or close to $250-$300. It’s really not worth it.
Don’t get me wrong, the lovely lady in the kitchen was so accommodating as were the cleaning staff but and the gardens looked amazing but it just doesn’t seem like the owners or management have a clue about hospo and the place is in dire need of some TLC.
The chalet had clean linen and beds were comfortable but the kitchen and bathroom are pretty rough to say the least. No toaster or hot plate, one plate, no bowls. The microwave is really your own cooking tool so you’d be ok with two minute noodles or packed pasta. The coffee and milk pots aren’t replenished. One would think the lack of facilities would push you to the restaurant. Beware. The seasonal vegetables looked like they were from a season some years ago. They do good chips and calamari so your safe with this.
If you find yourself here, don’t move any furniture, there is a lot of dust and moisture build up which was quite alarming. The window sills in the room on the south side of the Chalet where we had two single beds were dirtier on the inside than the outside. The reviews on TripAdvisor’s are similar. I did not want to shower barefoot. The bath has a real calcium build up and mould scattered the walls. Dust and cobwebs in the extractor was so thick I couldn’t see the holes. I washed my daughter by holding her in the shower with me as any other option didn’t seem wise. I do believe the rooms are sometimes used as emergency housing by the Ministry of Housing and WINZ. Again, I don’t have an issue with this but I’m not sure you can charge guests the price you do for what you offer.
The rooms in the wings of the hotel seemed a little nicer and a large tour group arrived when we were looking to leave.
It’s hard to give such a poor rating to what could be amazing. The staff seem to want to do a good job and are hard working as well.
Essentially the standard here is that of a mid to low range motel. I’d go back, for a quick swim and a lemonade, perhaps some calamari and a round of golf. I won’t be looking to stay again unless it gets a...
Read moreDrove up from Feilding late Friday night, (terrible fog through Desert Rd/Taupo/forests etc), arrived 9.30pm, and met a very warm greeting from receptionist, Santana. So helpful ! No food available, Dining Room closes @8.30pm. But we had stopped for a burger in Turangi just in case ! Shared a few drinks & stories with our friends from Whitianga, Corrina & Mitch by the (gas) fire in the Lounge. Bar Lady was awesome with politeness, attendance, & service in the Lounge. All the staff here were so obliging ! So off to bed in Chalet 3 at 11.30pm. Room all warmed up with heater ! Very comfy & spacious KING-size bed ! Excellent sleep. Woke up @ 7.15am & in our own personal Spa pool in our private back yard area by 8.00am !! 42* in the spa, 7* outside air temp. ! Yummy. Great cooked breakfast , came included with Chalet price. After brecky, went for a stroll around grounds (no golf for us, but there is a 9 hole course if you want it), & down to the Mineral Spa Pools. What a hike ! The steepest steps I have been down ! And up later ! Very dangerous if you have dodgy knees, hips etc(which I do). We are 69/66! But we got down there and what a disappointment. Alright, they are the oldest MODERN CONCRETE mineral pools in the world evidently (what about the Roman baths in Europe ?), but the steep steps down into them had no handrails, and because they had renovations going on to repair damage from the floods last year, there was gaps in the steps, & path. NOT GOOD ! They need to create a better, easier access, from the bush/river walk path ! So we did not get in to experience them & crawled back up the steps & path to the bar & rested , played pool & drank beer ! Otherwise the grounds, are lovely for a bush walk, & the river bank walk is lovely. The river was in flood mode after heavy rain this week, so was roaring like the Huka Falls ! Exciting ! Had a beautiful Lamb-burger & fries & salad for lunch, (served on a hot plate, with the fries in a mini cook-basket, & salad on a cold plate). 5*. So back to the bar, girls played pool, Val WON !! and we departed at 2pm for Rotorua in the rain . Overall very pleasant break; regardless of the access to the pools & their condition ! So good, in fact, that we have booked again for next year, Wellington Anniversary Weekend, having been assured that the Mineral pools will be upgraded by then (HOPEFULLY) ! I'll learn to hit a golf ball reasonably by then (& maybe even teach Val !). So we can have a good walk ruined by...
