This was our fourth stay at Rua Awa and each time just gets better and better! There are so many great things to do and see around the property as well as in the nearby areas of Kakahi and Owhango and we found new places to visit this time too. This time we particularly loved Kuratau Lagoon and Ohinetonga nature reserve and the amazing forest there. Next time it’s the Old Coach Road cycle trail and the Forgotten World railway. A great spot to base yourself for the Tongariro crossing or Northern Circuit and to relax after the Timber Trail.

The accommodation is top notch and always clean, the food once again first class and everything you need for a few days away is there. If you want a place to stay to ‘detox’ from the hustle and bustle of city/work life and routines, then you can’t go past Rua Awa.

Sheryl and Warren have a real eye for detail so its often the small things they offer that make the difference and the stay with them is always so welcoming and warm. We will definitely be back again and will continue to recommend Rua Awa to friends, family and workmates – you wont be...

Rua Awa Lodge is a magical experience. The lodge has a tremendous backstory, having been converted from a well-known saddlery and equestrian venue. The accommodation is spacious and well-appointed. The fire is excellent, and warms the main lodge and the bedroom. The kitchen facilities are excellent and equipped with everything for a great stay, from toaster and Nespresso machine through to a wide selection of cooking implements. The breakfasts are outstanding - Sheryl and Warren provide a great selection of produce made on site, from fresh eggs through preserved fruit, condiments and granola. And great homemade Kombucha! We took up the offer of Rua Awa meals and these were similarly tremendous. The outside bath and shower are wonderful and private - both for a relaxing soak and a clean. The Lodge is well-equipped with reading material, including advice on things to do locally - there is a surfeit of activities on site and nearby, or it is possible simply to choose to relax and enjoy the surroundings. A great experience, with exceptional hosts. We will...

Absolutely loved my time at Rua Awa Lodge, nestled away in Kakahi. The hosts are very welcoming and passionate about what they do. The lodge itself offers a great countryside getaway, used as an accessible base for adventure or to simply relax and get away from it all. You can choose to self cater or select from a range of nutritious yummy meals. With private yoga sessions available too, this place offers an oasis where you can pause from your daily life to centre yourself and focus on your personal health and well-being. Highly...

Amazing home stay and worth the trip. We made this trip up from New Plymouth to Kakahi just to stay at Rua Awa Lodge and it didn’t disappoint. From the moment we arrived until we left we felt relaxed and absolutely loved our stay here. Super clean, very comfortable and the breakfast was not only delicious but also homemade and sustainable. The river walk was super accessible and beautiful. Sheryl and Warren are great hosts. Can’t wait to tell all our friends about this secret spot.
