Firstly I just want to say that this place has a lot going for it. The people were friendly, the garden was lovely and the food was amazing! Unfortunately we didn't have the best time in our tipi. We had chosen this option over a campsite/cabin in the town because we thought it would be fun and a beautiful environment to spend a few days relaxing. They provide a lot of information warning you of the 5 min walk (fine) and the rustic facilities (also fine). What isn't made clear is that the tipi itself is quite an unpleasant experience and our family of 4 would undoubtedly have been much happier in our own tent. This was mainly because it was very dark inside the tipi which had very little natural light (see photos). Just reading was difficult inside without a torch during the day and the atmosphere was somewhat gloomy as a result. We were realistically unable to spend time inside unless we wanted to sleep. Outside there were only two chairs and 4 of us. The second issue was that the tipi leaked in several places but most awkwardly - on the main bed. Luckily it only rained one night. Still, given the considerable cost (compared with a campsite/cabin) we had hoped that the experience would be slightly more enjoyable than what we experienced. It's possible that the other accommodation options were closer to what we were looking for but, as it was fully booked, we didn't have a chance to compare.

I had such high expectations towards this hostel. I was really looking forward to stay here. Our final hostel after 3 months of backpacking New Zealand with my family. What a disappointment. The front of the hostel looks wonderful and clean. It has a great view and the kids could run around and play. But the hostel part, was terrible. Showers were dirty. You only had hot showers in the morning. The kitchen was dirty and a mess. Long termers have taken over the kitchen. So you have no space left in the fridge. Which is just as messy, sticky and dirty like the kitchen. Also, the counter was filled with 'reserved' pots and pans, which made it hard to cook. Management doesn't seem to check on a regular base what happens in the hostel. At one point there wasn't even cutlery! There's only one indoor kitchen and one table inside. Everything else is outside. So on cold or rainy days, this hostel isn't ideal. It's not equipped to provide everyone of an inside place to sit on those days. Other then that, it's a nice place to meet fellow people travelling with children. Also, Solscape looks beautiful (expect for the common areas, showers and kitchen). There are no washing facilities. But I would not recommend staying here. Especially if you're used to YHA standards. This hostel doesn't meet those high standards at all.

Solscape is delicious. And the view is amazing. Full disclosure: I'm not vegan. I've had vegan food before, and I've liked it probably half the times I've had it. My Airbnb host highly recommended their pizza night and she's been batting 1.000 so far so off to pizza night I went. I had the special pizza, with asparagus creme instead of vegan cheese, topped with tomato, zucchini, and walnuts. It was delicious! I had their side salad with it. That was tasty and full of seasonal veggies from what I think is their on-site garden. Anyway, go to pizza night. I would have given this 5 stars but I felt a bit invisible there. No one checked on me, and ordering was confusing. One person told me to have a seat, another told me to go order at the till. Spoiler: order at the till. On their defense, I was eating solo and probably was a low blip on the radar. Ps. BYOB.

We had been really looking forward to our stay at Solscape. We booked and paid for three nights on a powered site. When we arrived, we found that reception had closed early, our allocated pitch was already occupied, and there were no other pitches free.| |We tried to talk to staff in the kitchen and elsewhere onsite, but they were rude and not interested in helping us. We called the out-of-hours numbers several times until someone eventually answered, and we spoke to a manager. He told us he was on his way up from the town. We waited at reception at the entrance to the site. When he arrived, he drove straight past us, and didn’t stop to acknowledge us or reassure us he was going to sort things out. ||After a further wait (we had now been waiting an hour and a half), I went to try and find him. He was sitting in his car on the phone and refused to acknowledge my presence. He was the fourth member of staff that had now ignored me, so I was getting a bit tired of it. (It turns out that the other members of staff were probably woofers and not paid staff. That might explain why they weren’t interested in sorting out a double booking.)||Eventually, the manager finished his call and was clearly unapologetic. After a brief discussion, he said he was going to ‘kick the other guy off the pitch’. I was uncomfortable with that, so he suggested that I ‘find somewhere else to stay bro’. So, after two hours of trying to get a member of staff to sort out the double booking, we left with no apology, no refund and nowhere to stay at 7.30pm in the evening. ||The website made it look like a friendly and spiritual place. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is rundown and has a very unfriendly vibe. It has stunning view from the café, but the junk on the lawn spoilt it. The powered sites are cramped in a corner of the car park next to permanent residents who were clearly over having to share...
